Tanzania: A Grand Family Safari

Keep your binoculars handy for an amazing Africa tour that is a safari adventure unlike any other. Wake up to views of Mt. Kilimanjaro from your African lodge.
Then see who lives on the slopes of this mighty mountain. Is that a movie set for a Tarzan movie or is it the real life home of Maasai warriors and Africa's Big Five? Get a true taste of daily life in the African bush when you learn how to make beaded jewelry and throw a spear, and go inside a village school. Do you see those big cats resting under those enormous baobab trees or that odd-looking wildebeest making its way past herds of elephants and gazelles? It's a good thing you're safely aboard our open-top Africa safari vehicles where everyone has a great view of Tanzania's amazing wildlife during morning and afternoon game drives. But what about those safari lodges? From your tented camp in "the place where life began".... to your lodge next to Africa's "Garden of Eden"... to your tented camp in the western Serengeti, you'll feel like you're a part of the unbelievable wilderness pageant that comes alive right outside your door!
Day 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania -and your Africa tour begins
Tauck Bridges' family Africa tour departs: Kilimanjaro International Airport. A transfer is included from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arumeru River Lodge in Arusha – get a good night's rest! African safari tours are among the world's greatest adventures – and your family's begins in the morning!
Lodging Arumeru River Lodge
Description Your African travel adventure starts at the Arumeru River Lodge, located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, where views of the mighty mountain are as close as your windows! Built on an old coffee farm right next to a river, with neighboring national parks Arusha and Kilimanjaro, your lodge features chalet-style accommodations with private verandahs that open out to lush tropical gardens.
Day 2: Hiking in Kilimanjaro or a game drive in Arusha
A choice of adventures awaits to kick off Tauck Bridges' family Africa tour and safari* today! You can choose to hike with us in Kilimanjaro National Park – home to Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the world's highest mountains. While you won't be going all the way to the top, you'll take an exciting walk up (and down) Kilimanjaro's Merengu Trail, keeping an eye out for inquisitive monkeys, doe-eyed antelopes and abundant birdlife; you'll also visit the traditional home of a woman of the Chagga tribe. Or, your family can join an experienced local guide on a full-day game drive in Arusha National Park (the first of many on your journey) to look for gentle giraffes, boisterous baboons, colorful flamingoes and big buffalo. Later, everybody meets back at the lodge for a welcome dinner tonight to share stories of the fun you'll have on this Africa tour.

Day 3: Experience Tarangire... where legends say life began
Head to Tarangire National Park today – the place where life began, according to Maasai legend, and immortalized in many movies about Africa. Marvel at the classic African savannah stretching out all around you, the wildlife-rich plains studded with baobob trees. Hop aboard our open-topped safari vehicles for an afternoon game drive; look for big cats lounging under baobab trees or elephants cooling off at a watering hole. Following dinner at your tented camp tonight, join members of a local Maasai tribe, who will teach you some Swahili around the campfire - helping you master such words as jambo (hello), kwa heri (goodbye), simba (lion) and ninafurahia (I am having a great time)!
Lodging Kikoti Tented Camp
Description Tented camps are a way of life during African safaris, and Kikoti is one of the most luxurious. In Maasai, "kikoti" means "the place where life began" – a place where you will see both the Maasai people and the second largest concentration of big game in the world. You'll be staying in a large cottage-style tent for two nights, relying on solar-generated electricity when the sun goes down.
Day 4: Lessons from the Maasai in the African bush
Tauck Bridges' Africa tour for families features an up-close look at daily life in Tarangire today, starting with a morning game drive. Then local Maasai teach you how to make colorful beaded handicrafts, throw a spear and shoot a bow and arrow! Later, indulge in even more experiences guaranteed to create shared memories that will last lifetimes... taking in incredible vistas from "The Viewpoint"... noshing on a barbecue dinner in the bush... and learning about traditional dances from the local Maasai.

Day 5: Meet village students and watch the birds at Lake Manyara
On the way to Lake Manyara National Park, stop at a new primary school that Tauck helps support, and visit with the students and teacher. Arrive at the birder's paradise of Lake Manyara, and set out on a game drive to look for baboons and great birds of prey from your safari vehicle! Continue on to your colonial lodge, where your cottage-style accommodations for the next two nights overlook a coffee plantation and the eastern wall of the Ngorongoro Crater.
Lodging Tloma Lodge
Description Turn back time for two nights as you stay at this small cottage-style lodge right next to Africa's "Garden of Eden." In addition to enjoying great views of a coffee plantation and a beautiful waterfall, you'll be treated to home-made meals from organic food raised right here all year round.
Day 6: Ngorongoro, Africa's "Garden of Eden"
One of the best places on this Africa tour to spot the Big Five – elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo and the rare black rhinoceros – ancient Ngorongoro Crater is home to almost every species in Africa... except the giraffe, which can't negotiate the steep incline down. Game drives and a unique picnic lunch on the crater floor offer ample opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, hippos and lots of birds. Then it's back to your lodge for the evening.

Day 7: The"Cradle of Humankind" Olduvai Gorge
Olduvai Gorge, in the Great Rift Valley, is thought to be the home of some of Earth's earliest "people." Pack your own box lunch before heading out to see the place where anthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey found the fossilized remains of one of the first humans to walk upright. Then travel across the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti to Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp, in the heart of world-famous Serengeti National Park, where you'll spend the next two unforgettable nights of this Africa tour.
Lodging Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp
Description The Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp is located in the heart of the Serengeti on one of the main annual migration corridors for huge herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles... and the predators that stalk them. Keep an eye out for King Mufasa and baby Simba among the predators of the Serengeti landscapes!
Day 8: Soar Over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon
Rise early for a hot air balloon ride* at dawn over the vast Serengeti plains as animals, large and small, start a new day in the African bush – a true highlight of Tauck Bridges' fascinating family safari! This afternoon's game drive with a local guide offers up-close encounters with zebras, hyenas, elephants and jackals... and more stories to share around the campfire back at your tented camp tonight.

Day 9: Wonders of the western Serengeti
Make tracks for the western Serengeti, a great place to see the wildlife of the region. A morning game drive showcases Africa untamed, as you view lions, giraffes, zebras and more. Arrive at your hilltop lodge off the beaten path, where you'll spend the next two nights in a tented chalet overlooking the Mbalageti River. Enjoy lunch and some time to relax before embarking on a late afternoon game drive for yet another unique safari experience, spotting prides of lions, fleet-footed cheetahs, and the creature said to have been "put together with spare parts" – the African wildebeest.
Lodging Mbalageti Serengeti
Description You might think we've saved the best for last when you arrive at Mbalageti, in the western Serengeti. You'll spend your final two nights on safari in luxurious canvas chalet-type tents, each with its own private thatched-roof veranda – one of the best places we've found to watch the exciting migration of the region's wildebeests, zebras, topis and more.
Day 10: Safari traditions and Serengeti sundowner fun
Your riverfront lodge in the western Serengeti enables you to savor the African landscape as you wish on the last full day of your family's fun-filled Africa tour. Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in the western corridor of Serengeti National Park, where you can often see wildebeest and large numbers of lions and cheetahs, as well as herds of giraffe and zebra – an unforgettable spectacle of Africa's circle of life, right before your eyes! Equally impressive are Tanzania's magical sunsets, which out here are celebrated with traditional "sundowners"... like those you'll enjoy at your lodge on your final night on safari, followed by a festive farewell dinner.

Flights departing Africa leave late tonight; we have reserved a day room for you at the Arumeru River Lodge so that you can repack and relax as you wish.
