Patagonia Trekking - Spires and Ice

Southern Patagonia presents a veritable wilderness of huge glaciers and awe-inspiring granite peaks, the most famous of which are the Torres del Paine and Cerro Fitz Roy. Our popular itinerary accesses all of the best viewpoints, without the need for sustained multi-day trekking or backpacking. Throughout the trip, we make use of comfortable fixed camps with excellent facilities, including hot showers. Flying in to Punta Arenas, the southern-most town in Chile, we make a 6-day exploration of the Paine region, including excursions to Lago Grey and Lago Pehoe and day-walks up to the base of the majestic rock towers. Transferring to Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, our first stop-off is at the unmissable and extremely impressive Perito Moreno Glacier. Then, 3 days of trekking will enable us to seek out the best views of Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. This is your chance to experience one of the wildest and most spectacular corners of the world.

Day 1: Arrive Punta Arenas
Rendezvous at group hotel in Punta Arenas. KE Land Only services begin with a single timed group transfer to the group hotel. Over dinner we formally meet the rest of the group and our guide. (Included Meals: None)
Day 2: To Torres del Paine
After a leisurely breakfast we board a bus for the fascinating 5 hour drive to the Torres del Paine National Park. In summer time, the sun sets around 11 p.m. and there is plenty of light to allow us to admire the landscape, which becomes more dramatic as we reach the craggy mountains on the fringes of the park. We will stop for lunch in Puerto Natales and we will make a second stop at the Milodon Cave, a giant geological wonder where the bones of the milodon (a giant prehistoric sloth) have been found. Overnight at, the award winning Las Torres Ecocamp. (B,L,D)
Lodging Las Torres Ecocamp
Description EcoCamp Patagonia is located in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile with a unique view of the majestic granite towers. The region's first fully sustainable accommodation south of the Amazon and the first of its kind in the Patagonian wilderness, EcoCamp offers upscale camping in geodesic domes inspired by the region's ancient nomadic inhabitants.
Day 3: Visit Lago Grey
Today we start out with the drive to the southern end of Lago Grey, where we cross a suspension bridge to reach the beach overlooking the chilly lake and its floating icebergs. Walking out onto the Grey Peninsula, we have splendid views over the distant Grey Glacier. After lunch, we drive back to the National Park Office and set off on a second short walk (3 hours round trip) to Mirador Pehoe, where we gain our first impressive views (weather permitting) of the Paine Massif. An easy walk along the shores of Lake Pehoe takes us to Salto Grande, a giant waterfall, over which the waters of Lake Nordenskjold tumble into Lake Pehoe. From here, looking across the lake, there are more excellent views of the rugged peaks of Paine Grande and Los Cuernos. In the evening, we take a catamaran ride on the turquoise Lake Pehoe. Overnight at Pehoe Camp. (B,L,D)
Lodging Pehoe Camp
Description Camping Pehoe is located in the heart of the Torres del Paine National Park, known Reservation of the Biosphere with an area of 240.000 m2 and a wide relief from 200 to 3.000 meter above the sea level. It has many attractions, and Lago PehoƩ is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places of the Park.
Day 4: Trek to the Grey Glacier viewpoint
An easy walk today, with the option of a rather tougher one. It is a 4-hour round trip to the Grey Glacier Viewpoint (mirador) where the glacial outflow of the South Patagonia Icesheet falls in great pieces into the lake. This presents a dramatic and somewhat surreal sight, with numerous giant icebergs drifting across the waters. Beyond this point, there is the option of a further 4-hour walk to the foot of the glacier for the most outstanding views of all. Overnight at Pehoe Camp. (B,L,D)

It has many attractions, and Lago PehoƩ is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places of the Park.
Day 5. Frances Valley. Refugio Los Cuernos
Over the next 3 days we will make several approaches to the heart of the Paine Massif. On this first day, we trek up to the Italian Camp (Campamento Italiano), heading northwards and crossing undulating terrain, mixed grassland and sparse woodland. Beyond the River Frances, we reach the Italian Camp after about 3 hours walking. To reach the best viewpoint is a 2 hour round trip above the camp, following the upper, torrential section of the River Frances. From our highpoint, there are good views of the icefalls on the Glacier Frances and of the lakes far below. Returning to the Italian Camp, we have a further hour’s walk beside Lake Nordenskjold to the Refugio Los Cuernos. (B,L,D)
Lodging Refugio Los Cuernos
Description The Refugio Los Cuernos is a simple yet comfortable hikers' shelter in Chile's Torres del Paine National Park. It stands at the feet of its namesake, an astounding granite and sedimentary rock formation called Los Cuernos del Paine, ā€œThe Horns of Blue,ā€ named for its resemblance to a pair of horns.
Day 6: Trek above Lake Nordenskjold to the Ecocamp
Today we trek for 5 hours on the so called Paso Los Cuernos. The name of the trail is taken from the fact that it passes under the Cuernos (horns) of the Paine Massif. Great views of the peaks above us and of Lake Nordenskjold. Tonight we return to the comforts of the Las Torres Ecocamp. (B,L,D)
Lodging Las Torres Ecocamp

The region's first fully sustainable accommodation south of the Amazon and the first of its kind in the Patagonian wilderness, EcoCamp offers upscale camping in geodesic domes inspired by the region's ancient nomadic inhabitants.
Day 7: Trek to the Torres viewpoint
A superb trekking round trip, as we climb up to the foot of the impressive granite massif of El Paine. Our objective is the classic viewpoint for the several granite spires which comprise the Paine Towers. The summits of these spectacular peaks are close to 3000 metres (10,000 feet). They are all that is left of a rocky cirque that has been gradually eroded by glacial action. Given good weather, the sight of these rock towers, reflected in the lake below, is quite breathtaking. Approximately 8 hours round trip, returning to the Las Torres Ecocamp. In the evening we can enjoy a typical Patagonian barbecue. (B,L,D)
Lodging Las Torres Ecocamp
Description Las Torres EcoCamp is a deluxe camp of a kind never seen before in Chile. Similar in design to the well-known permanent tented camps in Africa, the Las Torres EcoCamp is set up at the beginning of the season in September and dismantled in May.
Day 8: Drive to Calafate Glacier excursion
Today, we leave the Torres del Paine region, driving through an area which is know as the Pampa. We cross into Argentina by the Cerro Castillo Border where we board the bus which takes us to El Calafate. This is a picturesque town which has been compared to villages in Switzerland. The drive to Calafate usually takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on the road conditions and the time spent at the border. In the afternoon after checking into our hotel, we make an excursion to the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier and enjoy the spectacle of icebergs breaking away and floating down river. Overnight at a hotel in Calafate. (B,L)
Day 9: Drive to Chalten
Continuing our journey by bus, we pass Viedma Lake en route to the village of Chalten which is the local Indian name for Fitz Roy. In Chalten we stay in a lodge with dormitory style rooms (6 bed maximum). In the afternoon we take the opportunity for a 4-hour stroll alongside the Rio Electrico, through a forest of lenga trees (a type of beech). This is a wild and beautiful valley, with parakeets, magellanic woodpeckers, and Chilean flickers in the woods. We go as far as the camping place at the huge boulder known as Piedra del Fraile and then return to our hosteria accommodation where we spend the next three nights. (B,L,D)
Days 10: Trek to Laguna Los Tres
Just a short drive and we are on our 3-hour trek to the Cerro Fitz Roy look out point at Laguna de Los Tres. There are stunning views of the east face of Fitz Roy from the lake. From Camp Poincenot, a beautifully forested trail leads back to Chalten. A total walking time of 7 to 8 hours. (B,L,D)
Day 11: Trek to Laguna Torre
To finish off our exploration of the Fitz Roy area, we make a long walk of around 6 or 7 hours, starting out at the southern edge of the Los Glaciares National Park. We make an early start and drive to the south gate, where we begin trekking in the valley of the Rio Fitz Roy. At Laguna Torre, we find particularly inspiring views of the rock pinnacle of Cerro Torre. The appearance of this unusual group of peaks changes, as we descend gradually via the lakes of Madre and Hija. We return to our hosteria accommodation in Chalten. (B,L,D)
Day 12: Drive to El Calafate
Morning at leisure and then we take the afternoon bus to El Calafate and check in to our hotel accommodation. (B,L)
Day 13: Drive to Punta Arenas
An early start for the overland journey to Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas. Time to explore this fascinating city in the late afternoon and evening. Overnight in a hotel in Punta Arenas. (B)
Day 14: Depart Punta Arenas
KE Land Only services end after breakfast. A single timed group airport transfer is provided. (B)

Eduardo from Cascada was an excellent leader to have with us throughout the trip. He was quick to adapt things to suit our abilities. Loved the trekking - of course. That's what I went for. In such good weather we had magnificent views of the Torres del Paine and Fitz Roy peaks as the climax of each of the treks.
