Austria - Alps to Salzburg

Revel in the awesome beauty of the Austrian Alps. With soaring, snow-capped peaks, thundering waterfalls, glacier-carved gorges and scenic villages, Austria is the perfect playground for the adventurous at heart.
Whether cycling, hiking, riding a chair lift, paragliding from a hilltop, or skiing down a glacier, this adventure inspires at every turn.The magical regions of Salzburg and Tyrol overflow with majestic waterfalls, fantasy caves, ice sculptures and endless vistas of fortress-topped hills. All of Mother Nature's bounty embraces you in this land of Mozart and "The Sound of Music."
Day 1: Zell am See
We meet in the lobby of the Grand Hotel in Zell am See. After lunch, take a short spin along the lake, opt for a walk or enjoy a scenic boat ride on the "Zeller See." (L, D)

Description Built in the 1890's, Grand Hotel Zell am See is nestled into the mountain landscape at the edge of Lake Zell and provides comfortable, modern rooms, a restaurant featuring hearty Austrian cuisine, and a spa.
Day 2: Zell am See
Cycle through wondrous villages admiring folk art museums and sawmills. Bike past the magnificent area lakes and 14,000-yearold glacier-carved gorges from Mittersill back to Zell am See. (B, D)

Day 3: Zell am See
Bicycle through quaint villages to the market town of Saalfelden. Avid cyclists will want to include the sidetrip up a secluded valley to and beyond Leogang. Paragliding beckons the truly adventurous, while glacier skiing provides a change of pace - and temperature! (B)

Day 4: Zell am See (hiking day)

Day 5: Werfen
Our bike path along the Salzach River links scenic villages, magnificent churches and charming mills. Take in Grossarler Ache, a rushing mountain stream that winds through the picturesque Liechtensteinklamm. Then on to Bischofshofen, famous for its Four Hills Ski-Jumping event. Today's destination is Werfen, brimming with historical churches. (B, L)

Description Located in an authentic, postcard-perfect Austrian village, Hotel Obauer is set in a 13th century building which has been renovated to offer contemporary accommodations. Its surrounding meadow and fortress have been featured in films including The Sound of Music and Where Eagls Dare.
Day 6: Salzburg
Opt to tour Eisriesenwelt, the world's largest cave system and a miracle of nature. Ride along the Salzach River, past flower-decked houses and the Gollinger Waterfall. Cycle to Hellbrunn with a castle that houses a Venetian-style water garden. Meander along the tree-lined trails, eventually arriving in Salzburg. (B)

Day 7: Salzburg
Enjoy a guided walking tour of Salzburg. Visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress perched on a rocky peak. Or, opt for biking along the Salzach River. Optional bus tours to surrounding areas carry us to the lake district, Bavarian Mountains, Eagle's Nest, or the stunning hills of "The Sound of Music." (B, D)
