Washington - San Juan Islands

There’s hardly a setting more peaceful than Washington State’s San Juan Islands, recently ranked #2 on the New York Times list of top travel destinations for 2011. Hike, bike, boat, kayak and horseback ride on three of the larger islands of this spectacular 100 million year old archipelago.
Rocky shores, sandy beaches, lush forests and serenity interrupted only by the soft sound of splashing surf. There’s hardly a setting more peaceful than Washington State’s San Juan Islands. Hike, bike, boat, kayak and horseback ride on San Juan, Orcas and Lopez, three of the larger islands of this spectacular 100 million year old archipelago.
Day 1: Seattle / Anacortes / San Juan Island
Morning shuttle from Seattle to Anacortes to catch a ferry to San Juan Island • On board, notice the hustle and bustle of city life begin to fade as we pass the picturesque islands of Lopez and Shaw • Patio lunch at The Front Street Café on the wharf at Friday Harbor • This afternoon, saddle up for your first bike ride through cottage country, pedaling rolling hills to Roche Harbor then on to Garrison Bay and the National Park, English Camp • Tonight we dine on local Pacific Northwest cuisine at The Place Bar and Grill, where vegetables are picked fresh from the chef’s garden.

Day 2: San Juan Island
Today we explore San Juan Island by bike and by foot • After a stop at the historic Lime Kiln Park Lighthouse and scenic hike down to various look out points, picnic at South Beach, watching for the 80+ Orcas who make this area their summer home • Bike past Lavender Fields and Jackle’s Lagoon and enjoy a short walk at Mount Finlayson • The day’s adventure ends at Cattle Point Lighthouse • For dinner, enjoy a savory bouillabaisse and filet mignon cooked to perfection at the local favorite, The Duck Soup Inn.

Day 3: Lopez Island
After breakfast overlooking Friday Harbor, ride the early ferry to Lopez Island, where you’ll quickly discover why Lopez is affectionately known as the most ‘biker-friendly’ of the San Juan Islands • Enjoy quiet roads and berry picking on a ride to Agate Beach, where you’re sure to see seals and eagles (among plenty of other wildlife) before sitting down for a well-earned lunch at the Love Dog Café • Make sure to stop into Holly B’s for a tasty treat before continuing on to the Lopez Island Winery for a tasting • Return to the ferry for a peaceful ride back to San Juan Island • Dinner is on your own tonight at one of the many local hotspots in Friday Harbor.

Day 4: Orcas Island / Walking Horse Country Farm
After breakfast, ferry to Orcas Island and head to Walking Horse Country Farm • Here, we meet Doug and Jeri Smart, who specialize in raising and training Tennessee Walking Horses, renowned for their smooth, comfortable gate and gentle dispositions • Picnic lunch at the farm before enjoying an afternoon horseback ride through peaceful backcountry, making sure to stop by Orcas Island Pottery to browse the local art and admire the stunning ocean views • Tonight’s dinner is at the New Leaf Café in the beautiful Outlook Inn • Overnight at the historic Rosario Inn & Spa, perched at the water’s edge on Cascade Bay.

Description Built 100 years ago by Seattle shipbuilder Robert Moran, the Rosario has since been resorted and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Comfortable and relaxing accommodations overlook Cascade Bay, with views of the surrounding the San Juan Islands.
Day 5: Orcas Island
Surrounded by small, scenic State Parkdesignated islands, Orcas Island is a playground for kayak adventures • Paddle quiet bays and shoreline, keeping your eyes peeled for sea lions, bald eagles, otters, porpoise and – if you’re lucky – orca whales • Break for lunch at a picturesque inlet or secluded beach • If you’re feeling energetic, take a short hike up Mount Constitution to the highest point in the San Juan Islands (it’s worth the effort – the views are spectacular!) • Wrap up your active day with a quick, refreshing dip in Cascade Lake at the base of Mount Constitution, where the brave can opt for some cliff jumping • Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at The Quilted Pig, the Rosario’s waterfront dining establishment.

This morning, enjoy a final bike ride into town, taking time to explore the quaint village of Eastsound, where you can browse the shops or walk down to the shore to enjoy a few quiet moments over a coffee • Shuttle to the Orcas Ferry Landing for lunch and to catch our final ferry back to Anacortes • Return to Seattle for late afternoon airport and hotel drop offs.
