Grand Tour of South Africa

A land of cultural and scenic diversity, South Africa offers a wealth of spectacular sights. This journey combines the thrill of a safari in the Sabi Sands with the rugged scenery of Mpumalanga and the historic battlefields of Zululand.
A land of cultural and scenic diversity, South Africa offers a wealth of spectacular sights. This journey combines the thrill of a safari in the Sabi Sands with the rugged scenery of Mpumalanga and the historic battlefields of Zululand. The tour continues along the Garden Route and concludes with stays in the Cape Winelands and cosmopolitan Cape Town.
Day 1: Arrive in Johannesburg/To Sabi Sands
Arrive in Johannesburg and fly to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Transfer to your lodge in the Sabi Sands and stay for 2 nights. Evening game drive. 
Lodging River Lodge, Lion Sands Private Game Reserve
Description River Lodge is the soul of Lion Sands and has been built on the banks of the Sabie River, positioned on a site with trees dating back 800 years. Facing due east, the lodge catches the sun as it rises over the Kruger National Park. Hosted by a family of staff that make it feel like home away from home, the lodge is about spirit, warmth and nature. Here you are invited to relax and experience African hospitality at its finest.
Day 2: Sabi Sands
Morning game drive followed by a hearty breakfast. A bush walk is followed by lunch. The afternoon is at leisure to relax or have a spa treatment (optional). After high tea there is an evening game drive.

Day 3: To Mpumalanga
Depart by road for a full day exploration of Mpumalanga, a spectacular region of mountains and waterfalls. Visits include God’s Window (weather permitting), the Blyde River Canyon, Bourkes Luck Potholes and the Mac Mac Falls. 
Lodging The Jatinga Country Lodge & Restaurant
Description Jatinga Country Lodge affords guests views of the impressive river frontage that winds its way through the estate.
Day 4: To Swaziland
Drive south into Swaziland, a rugged country characterized by mist-shrouded peaks. Visit one of the famous craft markets, the glass factory and stop for lunch en route (payable locally).

Day 5: To Isandlwana
Travel to Isandlwana, where the Zulus famously defeated the British army. Stay 2 nights at Isandlwana Lodge, overlooking the battlefields. Afternoon at leisure or take an optional tour of a modern Zulu village.

Description Isandlwana Lodge is carved into the iNyoni rock overlooking Mount Isandlwana, the site of the historic Anglo-Zulu war battle which took place on the 22nd of January, 1879.
Day 6: Isandlwana
Morning tour of Isandlwana with a historian, who will explain the story of Britain’s military defeat. Afternoon departure for Rorke’s Drift, where more Victoria Cross medals were awarded than at any other battle in history.
Day 7: To Umhlanga
Drive south through Zululand, stopping at Shakaland for lunch and a cultural show. Continue along the coast to Umhlanga.

Day 8: To Knysna
Morning flight to Port Elizabeth. Drive along the Garden Route to Knysna, via the Tzitzikamma Forest and Stormsriver. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 9: Knysna
Morning departure by ferry to the Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Heads. Take a guided nature walk through forests and along the scenic coast, ending with an outdoor buffet lunch. Return by ferry to the Knysna Waterfront 
Day 10: To Franschhoek
Drive to Franschhoek, the gourmet capital of South Africa, via Swellendam.

Day 11: To Cape Town
Full day tour of the Winelands. There will be two wine tastings, a cellar tour and lunch at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. Continue to Cape Town.

Day 12: Cape Peninsula
Full day tour of the Cape Peninsula, including a cable car ascent of Table Mountain. Visit the pretty seaside suburbs of Camps Bay and Hout Bay, with an optional cruise to Seal Island. Continue to the southern tip of the peninsula and visit Cape Point, returning via the penguin colony in Simon’s Town and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Day 13: Depart South Africa
This morning is at leisure, or take an optional excursion to Robben Island. Evening transfer to the airport for your international homebound flight.
