Tour Panama: Canal, Coffee & Quetzals

You’ll see things you’ve never seen, in a place you never thought to visit—which makes Panama our favorite new example of a travel adventure.
As you may have heard, there is a canal in Panama. Watching a football field’s worth of ship rise in a lock on a pillow of water is one of the world’s great manmade miracles. But what about the much tinier spectacle of a hummingbird barely larger than your thumbnail? Or the quiet whiiiiiish as your native dugout canoe slices through a rainforest river? Panama is one of the finest ecotourism destinations—easy to reach, friendly in the extreme, and not yet on everybody’s radar screen. From anteaters to mantled howler monkeys, the wildlife is extraordinary. The Audubon Society conducts its Christmas bird count here so you can just imagine the abundance. To explore the culture of this bridge between continents, we’ll take you to a native village and introduce you to our friends along the way.
Day 1: Panama Canal
Mid-morning, we’ll meet at our luxury resort about 30 minutes outside Panama City. The setting is sensational: right in the middle of Soberania National Park Rainforest on the banks of the Chagres River and the Panama Canal. Our week will be full of natural marvels, but today we start with one of man’s greatest engineering feats. The Panama Canal is actually a series of lakes, locks and channels – and you may be surprised to learn that it actually runs north and south! We’ll sail across Gatun Lake, weaving among gigantic cargo and passenger ships. This artificial lake is the part of the passage that crosses the Continental Divide from Gatun on the Atlantic to the Miraflores Locks on the Pacific side. At the locks, our guide leads us on a visit to the canal museum where we can also see ships being raised or lowered in the locks. During this day, we’ll also catch a first glimpse of Panama’s wildlife such as green iguanas, crocodiles, white-faced capuchin monkeys and osprey on the hunt for peacock bass.

In the afternoon, you can relax at our hotel and take a dip in the pool. Or join our guide for a visit to Panama City. The nation’s capital, it’s a lively mix of historic and modern. We’ll take a walk in the oldest districts to the 16th century ruins of Panama Viejo as well as 17th century Casco Viejo, where we see the rich architectural influence of Colonial Spain. Back at the resort, we all join up for our welcome dinner. Overnight: Gamboa (Sobernia National Park) Meals: L, D
Lodging Gamboa Rainforest Resort
Description Nestled in the middle of the Soberania rainforest, on the banks of the Chagres River and Panama Canal, is the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. All rooms include balconies overlooking the river and rainforest. A 60 foot waterfall plunges into the pool that is divided in two sections: one for kids and a second area for adult swimming and relaxation. From the resort, explore miles of trails in the rainforest spotting exotic birds and monkeys. After a day outside, rest in the hammock on your own private balcony.
Day 2: Embera Village
After breakfast, we board traditional piraguas (dugout canoes) for a paddle up the Chagres River. It’s a sensational perspective on the rainforest that crowds the river like a tall wall of green on each bank. We’re privileged today to meet members of the Embera tribe, one of country’s seven remaining indigenous tribes. Their village sits right on the river where they’ll greet us and welcome us into thatched huts that stand on stilts (equally important protection from rainy season floods and jaguars). Lunch is likely to be the typical fare of tilapia and fried plantains on banana leaves, and we’ll have a chance to interact with the villagers and learn about their folkways.

This whole day is a firsthand look at the cultural and environmental challenges that face Panama and so many other countries. The Embera and the wildlife with which they share their land are all threatened by deforestation and development. As you’ll see, Chagres National Park remains a rich habitat that contains jaguars, anteaters and mantled howler monkeys as well as bird sanctuary with more than 560 species. Conservation groups are fighting to protect the park and to extend it is as well to preserve the biodiversity. We leave the rainforest as we arrived—in piraguas—and return to our hotel for dinner and a chance to reflect on the beauty and fragility of this place. Overnight: Gamboa (Sobernia National Park) Meals: B, L, D

Day 3: Portobelo
Every schoolchild learns about birds migrating south for the winter. What you probably never knew is that portions of four major North American flyways all converge in Panama. The predictable result is one of the great bird watching opportunities you’ll find anywhere. Sobernia National Park (where our hotel is) is the site of the Audubon Society’s annual Christmas count because so many species fly through. On our morning jungle walk, you’re likely to see species you’ve never imagined – not to mention other wildlife like howler monkeys, sloths and coatimundis, long-tailed relatives of the raccoon.

Best of all this isn’t just a nature walk. We’re on Las Cruces Trail, a path with a past! During the Gold Rush of 1849, this was the shortcut that many fortune seekers took to reach California. The alternative was a long, dangerous journey by ship around Cape Horn. Not that pre-Canal Panama was all that easy. Prospective prospectors went by boat, mule and foot through swarms of malarial mosquitoes and snake-filled jungles. The going is considerably easier today; we’ll spend a couple of hours on this safe trail while our guide fills us in on the history.

Afterward, we’ll drive to Portobelo, the “beautiful port” on the Caribbean that was discovered and named by Christopher Columbus in 1502. We’ll rest up from the morning walk with a lunch overlooking the sea and the fort that is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monument. We’ll go exploring and learn about the city’s colonial past a well as its reputation as a target of buccaneers like Morgan and Hawkins. The day ends back at the hotel. Day 4: Los Quetzales Trail
Our day starts with about a one-hour flight to David City, the capital of Chiriqui Province. We’re headed for the highland village of Boquete, but before we reach it our minicoach intersects one of our favorite paths anywhere in the world. Those who are up for a beautiful downhill walk on the lower slopes of Baru Volcano will join our guide on Los Quetzales Trail. (If you prefer, you can motor on to our inn where we’ll meet you later.)

Los Quetzales is named for one of the world’s showiest birds, the long-tailed resplendent quetzal. In most of their habitats, quetzals are sighted only rarely. But here, the odds are outstanding that you’ll be able to see a male with his ruby, sapphire and emerald plumage. And that’s just one of the highlights. We meander through rainforests hung with vines and bromeliads. Part of the trail weaves through a waving bamboo forest. There are waterfalls and orchids, too – in short, just about everything you’d expect in this tropical countryside, all condensed neatly into an afternoon walk.

Finishing off a pure day in the country, we check into our historic inn nestled in the mountain village of Boquete, where the weather is eternally springlike. Furnished with antiques, the inn dates back to the opening of the Panama Canal, though it offers very up-to-date amenities including a spa. Dinner is in the award-winning gourmet restaurant. Overnight: Boquete Meals: B, L, D
Lodging Panamonte Inn & Spa
Description Called the "…most charming hotel in Panama…" by Travel + Leisure Magazine, the Panamonte Inn & Spa is located at the foot of Barú Volcano, in scenic Boquete. The hotel offers a deluxe spa, a regionally renowned gourmet restaurant (called by Conde Nast Magazine as one of the best in Central America), and 25 beautifully renovated guestrooms spread throughout the property and surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Day 5: Boquete
By now, we’ve had good looks at the rainforest from rivers and footpaths. Today, we raise our sights to the treetops. Entire species spend most if not all of their lives above the ground, living in the interlaced branches of the rainforest. Today, we get that bird’s-eye view from zip lines. These cables stretch from platform to platform in the canopy and, safely strapped in, we zip one by one along those lines. It’s a great rush to glide like this above the ground, one of those experiences you’ll recount time and again. (Not to worry: if it’s not your cup of tea, we’ll substitute a walk that keeps both of your feet firmly planted on the ground.)

The slopes around Boquete are home to shade-grown coffee plantations (fincas). The plants flourish in this temperate climate and produce rich beans that are highly sought after. This afternoon, we’ll visit a plantation, one of the many known for their sustainable farming practices. You’ll get a personal look at how cultivation and harvest work. (The beans are harvested by Guaymi Indians in the months of October and February.) As part of our walking visit, the finca will treat us to a coffee-tasting. After an energetic day, we return to the peaceful garden setting of our inn to relax and have dinner. Overnight: Boquete Meals: B, L, D

Day 6: Chiriqui
Today’s theme is water. You’ll have your choice of riding it or taking a walk to some of the week’s most scenic vantage points. For exciting rafting, we love the Chiriqui Viejo River. We drive up to the put-in spot through dense rainforests with breathtaking views out over the volcano and the teak plantations in nearby Costa Rica. From here, the river makes a thrilling drop through class 2-4 rapids with some impressive wave trains. You don’t need to be a tested rafter; our local outfitters provide the expertise you need for a safe ride.

Alternatively, you can join our guide on a series of trails that lead to some magnificent waterfalls. You’ll gain some altitude as well so the views are expansive and include the Pacific coast and lowlands all the way to the peaks of Costa Rica. The walk ends with a visit to some bubbling hot springs.

Our farewell dinner is a lovely affair, once again at the fine restaurant on the grounds of our inn. Overnight: Boquete Meals: B, L, D
