Panama Eco-Adventure Family Vacation

Monkeys? Check. Pirates? Check. Whitewater rafting? Check. Zipline? Oh, yeah. Panama has it all! Everybody knows somebody who’s cruised the Panama Canal, but just wait until you see what they missed by only floating through.
It’s a perfect ecotourism destination, easy to get to without wearing the family out. And once you’re there? We’ll walk with the wildlife. (Howler monkeys, anyone?) And we’ll go treasure hunting for a glimpse of a Resplendent Quetzal—the crazy beautiful bird that’s virtually impossible to spot anywhere else. In between, we’ll take a shower under a waterfall…visit an authentic village of a native tribe…and walk on the gentle lower slopes of a volcano. Our local guides will join you so you adults can take time off for a spa treatment or shopping. This is the way vacation should be: surprise after surprise, no worries, full of experiences you’ll never stop talking about.
Day 1: Panama Canal
Mid-morning, we’ll meet at our luxury resort about 30 minutes outside Panama City. The setting is sensational: right in the middle of Soberania National Park Rainforest on the banks of the Chagres River and the Panama Canal. We’ll walk right from our resort on an easy trail that leads us right down to the dock on the banks of the river, from where we sail across Gatun Lake, weaving among gigantic cargo and passenger ships. This lake is the part of the passage that crosses the Continental Divide from Gatun on the Atlantic to the Miraflores Locks on the Pacific side. During this day, we’ll also catch a first glimpse of Panama’s wildlife such as green iguanas, crocodiles, whitefaced capuchin monkeys and osprey on the hunt for peacock bass.

Every schoolchild learns about birds migrating south for the winter. What you probably never knew is that portions of four major North American flyways all converge in Panama. The predictable result is one of the great bird watching opportunities you’ll find anywhere. Sobernia National Park (where our hotel is) is the site of the Audubon Society’s annual Christmas count because so many species fly through. Our morning jungle cruise turns into an exciting game as you all compete to see who can spot the most species – not to mention other wildlife like howler monkeys and sloths (who spend a good bit of their lives hanging upside down from branches).

In the afternoon, relax at our resort and take a dip in the pool. Then, later join our guides again. Our week will be full of natural marvels, but today we’ll end with one of man’s greatest engineering feats. The Panama Canal is actually a series of lakes, locks and channels – and you may be surprised to learn that it actually runs north and south! Here our guide leads us on a visit to the canal museum where we can also see ships being raised or lowered in the locks. Overnight: Gamboa (Sobernia National Park) Meals: L, D
Lodging Gamboa Rainforest Resort
Description Nestled in the middle of the Soberania rainforest, on the banks of the Chagres River and Panama Canal, is the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. All rooms include balconies overlooking the river and rainforest. A 60 foot waterfall plunges into the pool that is divided in two sections: one for kids and a second area for adult swimming and relaxation. From the resort, explore miles of trails in the rainforest spotting exotic birds and monkeys. After a day outside, rest in the hammock on your own private balcony.
Day 2: Embera Village
After breakfast, it’s jungle adventure time as we climb into traditional piraguas (dugout canoes) and paddle up the Chagres River. It’s quiet and almost prehistoric the way the rainforest crowds the river like a tall wall of green on each bank. Ashore, our families meet up with the families of the Embera tribe, one of country’s seven remaining indigenous tribes. Our visit is fun…eye-opening…and a real cultural lesson. Their village sits right on the river where they’ll greet us and welcome us into thatched huts that stand on stilts (equally important protection from rainy season floods and jaguars). We’ll have lunch with them, get to see how they live and play, and learn about their traditions.

The day also offers a real-life look at the environmental issues that the kids and you hear so much about. The Embera and the wildlife with which they share their land are all threatened by deforestation and development. As you’ll see, Chagres National Park remains a rich habitat that contains jaguars, anteaters and mantled howler monkeys as well as bird sanctuary with more than 560 species. Conservation groups are fighting to extend it is as well to preserve the biodiversity. We leave the rainforest as we arrived—in piraguas—and return to our resort. Overnight: Gamboa (Sobernia National Park) Meals: B, L, D

Day 3: Baru Volcano Slopeside Walk
Our day starts with about a one-hour hop to David City, the capital of Chiriqui Province. We’re headed for the highland village of Boquete, but before we reach it our minicoach intersects one of our favorite paths. Everybody who wants to will join our guide for a fun uphill walk on the lower slopes of Baru Volcano. (Younger children or anyone who just prefers to take it easy can stay aboard the minicoach and head directly to our inn where we’ll meet you later.) Keep your eyes peeled for one of the world’s showiest birds, the long-tailed Resplendent Quetzal. In most of their habitats, quetzals are sighted only rarely. But here, the odds are good that you’ll see a male with his ruby, sapphire and emerald plumage. You’ve never seen anything like it—even at a zoo! We meander through cloud forests hung with vines and bromeliads. Part of the trail weaves through a waving bamboo forest. There are waterfalls and orchids, too – in short, just about everything you’d expect in this tropical countryside, all condensed neatly into an afternoon walk.

Finishing off a pure day in the country, we check into our historic inn nestled in the mountain village of Boquete, where the weather always feels like spring. It’s furnished with antiques, but everything about the place is family friendly. The inn dates back to the opening of the Panama Canal, though it offers very up-to-date amenities such as the spa where you may treat yourself to some adult time. Dinner is in the award-winning gourmet restaurant. Overnight: Boquete Meals: B, L, D
Lodging Panamonte Inn & Spa
Description Called the "…most charming hotel in Panama…" by Travel + Leisure Magazine, the Panamonte Inn & Spa is located at the foot of Barú Volcano, in scenic Boquete. The hotel offers a deluxe spa, a regionally renowned gourmet restaurant (called by Conde Nast Magazine as one of the best in Central America), and 25 beautifully renovated guestrooms spread throughout the property and surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Day 4: Boquete
By now, we’ve had good looks at the rainforest from rivers and footpaths. Today, we look up to the treetops. Entire species spend most if not all of their lives above the ground, living in the interlaced branches of the rainforest. Today, we get that bird’s-eye view from zip lines. These cables stretch from platform to platform in the canopy and, safely strapped in, we zip one by one along those lines. It’s almost like flying, one of those experiences none of you will ever stop talking about. (Not to worry: if it’s not your cup of tea, we’ll substitute a walk that keeps both of your feet firmly planted on the ground.)

The slopes around Boquete are home to shade-grown coffee plantations (fincas). The plants flourish in this temperate climate and produce rich beans that are highly sought after. This afternoon you have the option to walk or mountain bike to visit a plantation, one of the many known for their sustainable farming practices. You’ll get a personal look at how cultivation and harvest work. (The beans are harvested by Ngbe Indians in the months of October and February.) As part of our walking visit once we are at the plantation, the finca will treat us to a coffee-tasting. After an energetic day like this, you’ll all enjoy dinner and get a good night’s sleep. Day 5: Chiriqui Viejo or Esti Rivers
No water ride at a theme park will ever be the same after this day! We’ll divide up today according to your preference for the more gentle Esti River or the more adventurous Chiriqui Viejo River. We drive up to the put-in spot through dense rainforests with breathtaking views out over the volcano and the teak plantations in nearby Costa Rica.

One of our favorite memories from this day happened even before we got on the river (and we think you’ll love it too). We climbed out of 4x4s at the end of a dirt road. We were still above the river overlooking a spectacular valley with magnificent views to Costa Rica on the other side of the river. Our rafting guides were waiting for us. When we saw the rafts sitting next to them, we thought for a moment we were going to be asked to carry them down to the river. No worries, our guides informed us, we have mules to carry the equipment; we only need to follow a scenic path that winds down along the slopes of the valley, through rich green pastureland and orchards. Every turn offered spectacular views of birds, plants, the river and even Costa Rica.

Once at the base of the valley we receive our safety briefing from our guides, and board our rafts. From here, the river makes a thrilling drop through rapids with some impressive wave trains. You don’t need to be a tested rafter; we provide the expertise you need for a safe ride. Midday, we picnic on the shaded banks of the river on a delicious picnic spread laid out for us by our guides, then continue to our take out spot midafternoon before we return to our countryside inn. Day 6: Gulf of Chiriqui
Pack your swimsuit today, as we’ve planned an amazing day kayaking and snorkeling along the offshore islands in the Gulf of Chiriqui. The scenic gulf is host to more than 1500 islands and offers everyone the opportunity to explore and island-hop amid a diverse host of plants, animals and mammals. Bring your binoculars because the mangroves, coral reefs, white sand beaches, uninhabited islands and protected waters of Panama are teeming with wildlife.

We’ll begin in Boca Chica, a small port village about a 90 minute drive from Boquete. In sturdy one and two man kayaks, we’ll paddle from Boca Chica out into the Golfo de Chiriqui where we’ll have our pick of uninhabited islands to claim for the day. Paddling distances and times vary with sea conditions as well as with our group’s desires and abilities. Returning to Boquete, our farewell dinner is at the fine restaurant on the grounds of our inn.
