Secluded Tanzania

Tanzania is duly famed as one of Africa’s top game-viewing destinations. With some of the continent’s greatest concentrations of wildlife, the sweeping savannahs of Tanzania offer an iconic safari experience. What makes our trip superlative is our emphasis on remote areas where game, rather than tourists, abounds. While small-group journeys to classic safari “essentials” like Ngorongoro Crater are included, we venture far from the well-trod track. In the wild expanse of Tarangire, elephants far outnumber people. And in the fabled Serengeti, our deluxe mobile tented camps are isolated outposts among the thousands of animals that traverse the plains beyond our tents.

Tanzania is a magnificent safari destination, with prolific wildlife. This safari is designed to showcase the finest wildlife areas of Tanzania. We will try to balance all wildlife viewing to create an incredible, all-around wonderful safari experience that takes advantage of the highlights of the various ecosystems on this itinerary. This is delicately engineered by our local Expedition Leaders and guides. After several years of working on this trip and securing different permits, we have created an itinerary that incorporates the best wildlife spots while maintaining the seclusion and atmospheric accommodations that make an NHA trip special. Further, the remote exclusivity of our private mobile tented camp ensures we are far from the crowds. Add an extension to the mountain gorillas of Uganda or Rwanda and make this an all-encompassing African wildlife experience.
Day 1: Arusha, Tanzania
Arrive in Arusha and transfer to Arumeru River Lodge in view of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Lodging Arumeru River Lodge
Description This new luxury lodge is situated on 12 acres of an old coffee plantation and set on the banks on the Arumeru River, offering a lovely respite from the rigors of safari. With beautiful lawns and tree-lined grounds, the lodge has lovely views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro (on clear days). A swimming pool and beautiful gardens grace the grounds and the Arumeru River runs past the border of the property. These elements lend themselves to some wonderful birdwatching. Located just 40 minutes from the Arusha airport (Kilimanjaro) it is extremely convenient. Individual chalets and a beautifully adorned dining lodge create a wonderful African atmosphere with plenty of comforts.
Days 2 - 4: Tarangire National Park - NHA Luxury Semi-Permanent Camp
This morning we depart for the NHA Luxury Semi-Permanent Camp. Located in Tarangire National Park close to Silalie wetland, our camp is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the proximity of some of Africa’s densest concentrations of game. The panorama spreads before our deluxe tented camp, which though far from the tourist circuit spares nothing in comfort, from hot showers to gourmet dining and starlit conversation around a crackling campfire.

Seldom-visited Tarangire National Park, the “Baobab Capital of the World,” teems with wildlife. Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry riverbed for underground streams while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons and wild dog roam the plains. Tarangire is also the one place in Tanzania where we regularly see dry-country antelope such as the oryx and gerenuk. A range of daily activities is available, from guided walking safaris to game drives in open vehicles, bush breakfasts beneath a baobab tree and sundowner cocktails under thatch at camp.
Lodging NHA Luxury Mobile Camp
Description To sleep under canvas, in the depths of the African Wilderness is a unique experience. To be able to do so with all the comforts of a tourist class hotel is a real plus. Our aim is to combine these and to be sufficiently mobile enough to locate ourselves in areas of pristine beauty that will surpass your wildest expectations. Our NHA Luxury Mobile Camp provides travelers with one of the most exciting and unique safari experiences available. Designed to allow travelers the ability to immerse themselves in an Africa of the past, these remarkable tents also offer plenty of comfort, each with full beds and bedding, attached en suite bathrooms, and private verandahs for relaxing in your own personal safari style. Imagine Ernest Hemingway or Teddy Roosevelt (except we surely do not hunt) perched on the porch of their own private tents, scanning the surrounding savannah for game, and you’ll picture what its like to stay in our luxury mobile camp. These luxury tents are set where game viewing is at its best, away from other visitors as much as possible.
Day 5: Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Highlands
Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is famous for its alkaline lakes, habitat for thousands of pink flamingos. Troops of baboons and blue monkeys carouse in the forest while leopard, cheetah, elephant and plenty of hoofed game roam the plains. With luck we may see the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. We continue our drive along the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Plantation Lodge on a working coffee plantation, offering the ambience of a genteel private household.
Lodging Lemala Ngorongoro
Description Lemala Ngorongoro, a luxurious tented camp set amongst an acacia forest on the crater rim, is the perfect place to experience the crater's splendors. Each of the 9 spacious tents has solar lighting, comfortable beds with warm duvets, wooden floors and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and safari showers. Lemala’s guests will benefit from it's quick and easy access into the crater via the Lemala access road, a mere 15 minute descent, maximizing game viewing. Oftentimes, the first hours of a morning game drive are absorbed in solitude in the early morning light before others arrive. In the evening, enjoy a drink around the campfire before retiring for dinner under intimately lit chandeliers.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Traversing the Ngorongoro Highlands, we reach the crater rim, 7,300 feet above seas level. Within the steep walls of the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera, we find a remarkable haven for wildlife, attracted to the constant water. On the crater floor, we watch for zebra, wildebeest, gazelle and eland, and the lions and hyenas that prey upon them. If we are exceptionally fortunate, we may spot the endangered black rhinoceros. Late this afternoon, we return to the crater rim to relax at Lemala Ngorongoro, a seasonal luxury camp replete with  the romance of Africa.

Days 7 - 11: Serengeti National Park – NHA Luxury Mobile Camp
The Serengeti Plain is legendary. These expansive grasslands are home to a profusion of wildlife year-round, and are renowned for the phenomenon of the Great Migration, when vast herds of wildebeest trek 1,800 miles from Kenya’s Masai Mara to the southern Serengeti and back again. On daily game drives, we immerse ourselves in a remarkable wildlife spectacle, as huge herds of wildebeest and zebra traverse the savannah with thousands of antelope, gazelle and giraffe, and big cats race after prey. We may behold stunning scenes of a lion taking down a sick wildebeest, or a cheetah overtaking an infant. We track the area’s prolific wildlife in private, open topped four-wheel-drive vehicles, allowing impressive mobility and proximity. Our deluxe mobile camp ensures that we go where the wildlife is. Our walk-in tents are reminiscent of the safari era of yesteryear, offering comfort and seclusion.

We relish one final game drive this morning before our flight back to Arusha, where a dayroom is provided at a nearby hotel. After a farewell dinner, transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for flights home.

"We were fortunate to choose this trip as we saw plenty of others along the way in crowded safari hotels or lodges. The out of the way camps we stayed at, set in our own oasis, was what I have come to dream that Africa was about, and this trip truly delivered. Thank you for a very special experience."

"The camps made this trip. Being able to get away from other visitors, in our own safari trucks, with our own camps, made all the difference in the world. We loved this trip for it's out-of-the-way nature and for the great guide we had -- he was remarkable with wildlife and a great person as well."

“Naiman is an extraordinary guide! We got to know him quite well, since there were only 4 of us; He was remarkably knowledgeable, sharing a lot of both useful and interesting information about the animals, their habits as well as habitat, and knew the names of ALL the many birds we encountered. He delight was contagious, as if this were his first trip also (after 10 years as a guide.) He was unfailingly courteous, and very perceptive of our needs.”
