Expedition Costa Rica

This carefully designed Costa Rica expedition takes small groups of travelers on an intimate journey into three different ecosystems, offering a range of activities that give our guests a deep and unique view into this remarkable country.
Costa Rica is one of the world’s supreme destinations for ecotourism. And it’s no wonder: The natural treasures of Costa Rica are in a class all their own. So is this trip. It offers a unique set of experiences to bring you into less discovered realms of this adventure travel mecca. We’ll hike, explore and f oat amid incredible nature. We’ll also learn about the land and its people, tour a tropical fruit orchard, find out about local conservation efforts and search for the elusive and revered resplendent quetzal. It’s Costa Rica, full of wonders, and full of surprises.

This carefully designed Costa Rica expedition takes small groups of travelers on an intimate journey into three different ecosystems, offering a range of activities that give our guests a deep and unique view into this remarkable country. Some fairly long drives along good and not-so-good roads may be necessary.
Day 1: San José, Costa Rica
Arrive in Costa Rica’s capital, where we enjoy a welcome dinner.
Lodging Hotel Bougainvillea
Description Set within 10 acres of lush gardens, rich with over 50 species of bromeliads, native trees, several orchid species, herb and cacti gardens and frog ponds, the Bougainvillea draws a colorful array of birdlife. This charming boutique hotel offers modern, spacious, well-appointed rooms, each with a view of the gardens. Additional amenities include a lovely restaurant, swimming pool, fitness center & tennis courts, as well as an on-site Activities Coordinator.
Days 2 & 3: Tiskita Jungle Lodge
On Day 2 we fly to Golfito and continue by road to Tiskita Jungle Lodge. Far from the luxury resorts of the north, Tiskita sits within a remote 300-acre private rainforest reserve. This is a wild and awe-inspiring place: squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins and sloths swing through the trees, and more than 270 bird species thrive in the lush habitat. Tiskita’s hand-built cabins survey the sea from a high ridge and are made from local hardwood trees that have fallen on the property. Delicious meals are prepared with fresh local fare, including the more than 125 types of organic tropical fruit grown on the estate. On a hike we’ll examine the amazing array of exotic fruit trees and taste many unfamiliar varieties. We’ll also take an in-depth rainforest hike and walk to the beach village of Punta Banco.
Lodging Tiskita Jungle Lodge
Description The famed Tiskita Jungle Lodge is located in the southwest corner of Costa Rica within the Tiskita Biological Reserve. The reserve comprises a 550- acre private biological protected region of primary, secondary and reforested areas, as well as 37 acres of tropical fruit orchards and farms, featuring over 100 exotic fruits. The 16 hilltop cabins and common lodge are built on a rise of land well above the sand beach. Each private cabin has its own verandah equipped with comfortable sitting chairs and string hammocks. The private bathroom and showers within each cabin are open to the rainforest. The common areas include a refreshing pool, a lounge area and a dining area open to the fresh ocean breezes and the rainforest sounds.
Day 4: Sierpe River / Manuel Antonio National Park
Today we drive up the coast toward Manuel Antonio, stopping en route at the Sierpe River in Boca Coronado. Explore this unique mangrove ecosystem alongside local naturalists aboard our private boat. Floating down the river, we may see American crocodiles, rainbow boas, green iguanas, white-face capuchin monkeys, long-nosed bats, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, kingfishers, black hawks, frigate birds and a variety of egrets and herons, such as the boat-billed heron. Later this afternoon, continue on to Manuel Antonio, where we’ll spend the next two nights on a lush hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Hotel Si Como No.
Lodging Hotel Si Como No
Description The elegant Hotel Si Como No, built to harmonize with its environment by preserving animal corridors and using solar energy, is discreetly integrated into Manuel Antonio’s tropical paradise.
Day 5: Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio is spectacular, with expanses of white-sand beach fringed by one of the most verdant rainforests on the planet. We spend most of the day exploring the stunning biodiversity of the park. Iguana and agoutis inhabit the forest, while colorful crabs dot the rocks that guard turquoise lagoons. After dinner, we will have the opportunity to explore the surrounding rainforest on a night walk, revealing a symphony of nocturnal wildlife.

Day 6: Cerro de la Muerte / La Amistad International Park
After breakfast, we make our way to La Amistad International Park’s Cerro de la Muerte in the Talamanca Mountains – the highest point along the Inter-American Highway. We’ll travel through the cloud oak forests of Costa Rica’s largest and most remote national park, soaking in sweeping mountain views as we hike past colorful bromeliads and orchids. Our destination this evening is the Savegre Mountain Hotel, which rests at 7,200 feet above sea level within a private biological reserve where over 170 tropical bird species thrive.
Lodging Savegre Mountain Lodge
Description Nestled in the Talamanca Mountains within a verdant tropical cloud forest, Savegre Lodge is a comfortable modern facility boasting remote tranquility. Large picture windows in the main lodge look out over the surrounding gardens, overflowing with colorful flowers and flitting hummingbirds. The hotel is located at 7,200 feet in altitude and offers a prime environment for bird watching and nature viewing. While the guest rooms provide only the basic amenities, the rooms are clean and comfortable and all have private facilities.
Day 7: Los Quetzales National Park
A morning nature walk reveals a wide array of vibrant birds including the emerald toucanet, golden-browed chlorophonia and spangled-cheeked tanager. This is also an ideal habitat for the resplendent quetzal, a revered and endangered bird of striking beauty. Listen for their deep, melodious calls and quietly track these elusive birds to observe them in the wild. An afternoon walk along a flowing stream reveals a beautiful cascading waterfall fed by the Savegre River. This evening we bring our adventures to a close over a farewell dinner.

“Nancy was wonderful!! Her knowledge of every aspect of the trip was fantastic. A great personallity, caring attitude, and a 'WHOLE' lot of fun describes Nancy. Nancy was a wealth of information about the wildlife and plants of Costa Rica. She was also a very pleasant person to travel with and always trying to be helpful (I'm not used to having so much done for me - it's great though). She has a very good relationship with the hotel managers and staff, which is always nice to see. I truly enjoyed the trip more because of her professionalism and care.”
