Across the Andes from Salta to Atacama

The vivid landscapes of Argentina and Chile’s high deserts offer sublime red rock canyons, high altitude vineyards, and sensuous geothermal hot springs—in one astonishing region.
The vivid landscapes of Argentina and Chile’s high deserts offer sublime red rock canyons, high altitude vineyards, and sensuous geothermal hot springs—in one astonishing region. Rife with the rich cultural and natural history of the Andean people, travelers explore the most striking scenery on earth while visiting local villages bursting with traditional charm. From llama trekking near the colorful town of Purmamarca and flamingo watching at Laguna Chaxa, to hiking the surreal, polychromatic monoliths of the “Canyon of Arrows,” visitors immerse themselves in the region’s diverse ecosystems, set against the indigenous beauty of the Andes.

This adventure offers the opportunity to explore a vast region of stunning landscapes and Andean culture spanning two countries. Distances between destinations will necessitate some long travel days and time spent in a vehicle. In addition, part of this trip takes place at very high altitudes (the highest being approximately 14,000 feet when crossing between Argentina and Chile), and is therefore not recommended for those with heart or respiratory conditions, or those who have known issues with altitude.

Our Across the Andes from Salta to Atacama trip is an Exploratory Adventure. Exploratory Adventures are programs in which a select small group of travelers joins us on an exhilarating inaugural journey to a new destination. While Exploratory Adventures tend to be very exciting (and often include surprises of which even we are unaware), we ask travelers to “go with the flow” and expect the unexpected. These adventures are for those true explorers who enjoy a free-spirited adventure, as the itinerary will most likely continue to change and develop. This flexibility in our itinerary allows us to provide the best travel opportunities within each region. Exploratory Adventures may be canceled by NHA if we deem it necessary, and they require a minimum of five travelers to guarantee departure. We hope you will join us as we explore a truly thrilling new adventure off the beaten path!
Day 1: Salta, Argentina
Arrive in Salta, an architecturally preserved Hispanic colonial town in Northwest Argentina, surrounded by mountains and the lush, green Valle de Lerma. Those who arrive early may wish to partake in an optional afternoon city tour, visiting the historical center, main square, and Museum of High Altitude Archaeology. Gather for a welcome dinner in the Finca Valentina country house and enjoy a traditional Asado barbecue, in the foothills of the Andes. Overnight at charming Legado Mitico in the city center.
Lodging Legado Mitico
Description Salta’s Legado Mítico Hotel exudes a quiet charm. Featuring an intimate library, brilliant solarium, and cozy lounge serving “mythical breakfasts”—this escape offers personalized touches, at the cultural edge of Valle de Lerma. Each room features distinctive and traditional décor, representing local visionaries, poets and heroic figures.
Day 2: Salta / Cafayate
Enjoy a goat cheese tasting at Posta del las Cabras, before visiting Quebrada de las Conchas (Gorge of Shells), a natural heritage site formed by marine sediments of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras, 60-90 million years ago. Hike along local footpaths for intimate views of the brilliant red rock formations, in the heart of authentic Andean culture. Overnight in the luxurious Patios de Cafayate Hotel.
Lodging Patios de Cafayate Hotel
Description Experience gracious living and warm hospitality in the old world Spanish glamor of Patios de Cafayate Hotel & Spa, surrounded by the mountains and vineyards of Argentina.
Day 3: Cafayate / Colomé
A journey along scenic route 40 takes us to the stunning Quebrada de las Flechas (Canyon of Arrows). With its imposing rock formations containing pre-historic fossil registries—outlining the sweeping geologic shifts occurring in the Andes over the last 20 million years—this expansive canyon is like no place on earth. Hike through astonishing displays of powerfully etched conglomerate and sandstone monoliths at Las El Ventisquero, before cozying up to the flickering fire of the Gaucho Bar for pre-dinner drinks at tranquil Estancia Colomé.
Lodging Estancia Colomé

A biodynamic community, this working farm reconnects guests to nature’s deeper rhythms through star gazing, horse back riding and wine tastings. Take in the ethereal beauty of the surrounding hills before cozying up to the pool, lounge and en suite fireplace.
Day 4: Colomé
Today, relax in the verdant hills of Estancia Colomé, Argentina’s oldest winery—a serene refuge harboring the third highest vineyard on earth. After sipping a luscious reserve, hike through the wide-open mountain vistas or take a horseback ride through the stunning scenery. Enjoy a bike ride through the winding paths of this biodynamic farming community, visit the world-famous James Turrell Light Museum, take a sunset stroll among the gardens then retire on the veranda for a star gazing spectacle.

The road between Colomé and Salta is one of the most spectacular routes in the Argentinean Northwest, covering terrain ranging from arid deserts to lush jungles. Along the way, we visit local artisans making traditional Poncho salteños—the vibrant traditional cloaks worn by gauchos on the plains—using their ancient weaving techniques. A picnic in Los Cardones National Park, replete with 300-year-old giant cacti, provides opportunities to spot wild burros, guanacos and condors soaring overhead. Spend the night in Salta.

Day 6: Salta / Llama Trek / Purmamarca
For more than 5,000 years, Andeans have used llamas to trek among the multi-colored hills of Humahuaca Gorge. Following in their footsteps, our llama trek skirts Tilcara, a quaint village renowned for its local people’s connection with nature. We stay in picturesque Purmamarca, “Town of the Virgin Land,” which allows us to explore the village and Seven Colors Hill, a storied, pre-Incan archaeological site. Before day’s end, walk among the gardens and gurgling streams at our colorful La Comarca hotel.
Lodging La Comarca
Description La Comarca, Hotel con Encanto is located at the beautiful town of Purmamarca, heart of the mythical Quebrada de Humauaca, declared “World Historical Heritage Site” by UNESCO. The architecture of this modern luxurious yet authentic lodge is inspired by the region’s landscape and the culture, harmonized with the privileged natural surroundings. Its warm rooms were built with local materials, such as cactus wood, stone, hand-lipped wood, reed, and clay, in a contemporary and uncluttered style. The rooftop terrace offers the wonderful attraction of views of the entire valley and the surround mountain landscape.
Day 7: Purmamarca / Andes Crossing / San Pedro de Atacama
Today we traverse the imposing Andes, crossing Argentina’s sublime Altiplánico to reach Chile’s San Pedro de Atacama—the world’s driest desert. Along the way we pass by snow-capped volcanoes and yellow fields of “Ichu” grasses before visiting the sprawling Salinas Grandes salt flat. Pause for lunch at Susques before arriving at the serene Altiplánico Hotel in the mountain foothills.

Day 8: Atacama Desert: Geysers del Tatio / Termas de Puritama
At sunrise we visit Geysers del Tatio, roiling high altitude fumaroles spraying water as high as 32 feet. Rising 14,043 feet above sea level, El Tatio spews its geothermal steam among ancient towering volcanoes. Next, we are immersed in the Termas de Puritama, revitalizing pools gurgling from River Puritama’s thermal waters. With temperatures reaching 89.6ºF, they relax both body and spirit. Proceeds from our hot springs visit directly benefit the local Atacameño community.

This region’s inspiring geological features make it one of the most fascinating—yet inhospitable—ecosystems in the world. Next, travel to the foreboding landscapes of Valle de la Luna and Valle de Marte to view an awe-inspiring sunset against the polychromatic rocks. Return to San Pedro for a farewell dinner.
