The word Patagonia conjures up images of brave adventurers and remote landscapes in a hidden corner of the world. For centuries the world's bravest have tested themselves in these lands - often with disastrous results. These days, Patagonia still offers up plenty of adventure, but without the heaping servings of hardship. On our Pedal and Paddle trip, in Argentinian Patagonia, you too can play Magellan and unleash your inner explorer, but with a nice side dish of comfort at our spectacular backcountry ecolodge.

Had those early explorers had their own wood-fired hot tub overlooking the Andes, they may have stayed a while longer. And if they'd known about the network of beautiful rides surrounding our lodge, well they just may have given up the exploring life all together and settled down in this little corner of paradise. To ramp up the adventure factor just a little more (and take advantage of 3 world-class whitewater rivers nearby), we're throwing in a few afternoons of whitewater rafting and/or kayaking, optional daily yoga sessions, volunteering with a local project, and an overnight excursion to a beautiful riverside cabin. About the only thing we left out to make this the most adventurous adventure ever are the scurvy, and rickety boat to get you home...

You crave real adventure and are willing to go far to get it. You love mountain biking but don't mind mixing it up with some other activities. You know how to swim and are willing to try some whitewater rafting (or you're already experienced and are ready to tackle the river in a kayak).

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Bariloche, transfer to lodge: We'll meet you at the Bariloche airport and escort you to our spectacular eco-lodge tucked away in the Patagonian Andes, at the confluence of two rivers. Along the way we'll check out some jaw-dropping scenery in Nahuel Huapi National Park within the Rio Azul Wilderness Area. We'll check in to the lodge and get to know each other over a delicious dinner and talk about the epic trip ahead!
Day 2: Cajon Trail Loop and kayaking lessons: After breakfast, we'll head out on the beautiful Cajon Trail. This loop offers moderately challenging riding with several climbs, along with some semi-technical descents mixed with rolling forest paths, and 2 narrow suspension bridges. We'll stop by a few neighboring farms to meet the neighbors and learn more about the local community. A picnic-style lunch of homemade pizzas and homebrew beer will be waiting for us at rustic backcountry trekking huts. We'll then visit a remarkable and unique geological feature: a rock canyon some 125 ft (40 m) deep, 20 ft wide at the bottom where the river passes through, yet barely 3 ft wide at the top where one can stand straddling the river with one foot on each side of the gorge. We'll get ready for an afternoon of kayaking practice or river rafting on the spectacular Azul River.

Never kayaked before but keen to try? Not to worry - our instructors will walk you through all the steps and teach you everything you need to know for safe and exciting kayaking. You'll learn wet exits, Eskimo rolls and paddle techniques during this first session. We'll end the day with yoga on the lodge deck overlooking the river, then enjoy a delicious dinner and bonfire under the stars
Day 3: Perito Moreno Ride: We'll start off with a 45 minute shuttle followed by a 7km ride on undulating terrain with moderate climbs. Depending on snowfall, we may be able to climb up to the summit, which will offer breathtaking views of Perito Moreno glacier and the surrounding mountaintops. We'll break for lunch, before descending an epic all-mountain ride with fireroads, singletrack and beautiful forests mixed in. We'll enjoy a relaxing evening in an outdoor wood-fire hottub, then dinner at an old log cabin.
Day 4: Rio Ternero Trail: We'll get an early start this morning and shuttle to Rio Ternero. We'll set out on a relatively challenging 40 km ride of rolling hills, semi-arid terrain and beautiful vistas, breaking for both lunch and traditional 'mate' at an old settler's home. We'll head back to the lodge where we'll relax and tend to our sore muscles in the hottub and saunas.
Days 5-6: Manso Valley Overnight Trip: Today we head to the stunning Rio Manso valley for an overnight trip. We'll transfer by van to the Lago Steffen trailhead and sit in awe of the spectacular 3-lake view. We'll spend the morning laughing down a short 7 km forest trail. Once we arrive at Lago Steffen we'll stop for a gourmet lunch. In the afternoon, we'll hop in kayaks, rafts or duckys for a fun and exciting paddle to our cabin on the river, where we'll spend the night. Our chef will accompany us and prepare a delicious dinner at our riverside cabin. After dinner, a bonfire by the river will cap off another perfect day. We'll start the next morning with a gourmet breakfast, then leave the cabin by bike for a rolling 20 km ride through the national park. This is a true adventure ride - you'll feel like Indiana Jones with all the stream crossings and suspension bridges! We'll end the ride at on old farmstead, stop for lunch, then paddle the lower Manso river to the Chilean border. The van will be waiting for us at the take-out for the 90-minute drive back to our lodge, just in time for another delicious dinner.
Day 7: A Different Kind of Riding: Today is a day to learn about sustainable adventure tourism by experiencing it first-hand. Leaving directly from the lodge on horseback, we'll ride through the Andes to a nearby mountain refuge and experience the beauty of the Patagonian backcountry on our four-legged friends. On the way back, you'll have the option of continuing on by horseback, or hopping on your mountain bike for some challenging, technical decents. Upon returning to the lodge, Lucas Chiappe, a nationally recognized ecologist will lead a slideshow presentation and discussion about environmental preservation and sustainable development. After a delicious dinner, we'll do a few shuttle runs on our mountain bikes near the lodge.
Day 8: Trailbuilding in the Rio Azul Canyon: Today, we'll have an opportunity to give back to the amazing community that has enabled us to experience this stunning scenery on our bikes. We'll assist the Land Ethic Action Foundation with its mountain bike trail building initiative in the Rio Azul Protected Area. We'll ride our bikes to the worksite and enjoy a picnic lunch in the mountains. We'll learn about sustainable trailbuilding techniques and get our hands dirty using shovels, rakes and chainsaws to build new trails and bridges over streams and gullies. We'll get to test-run the new sections, enjoying the fruits of our labour, before riding back to the lodge for hot tubs and dinner.
Day 9: Return to Bariloche: After a last breakfast and hugs with our hosts, we'll head to Bariloche airport, arriving at noon.
