- Day 1: Arrive Lima
- Known as the City of Kings, Peru’s capital city Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro on the Day of the Three Kings (Epiphany) in 1535. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of old Lima, and it is here you find the Cathedral, Government Palace and Archbishop’s Palace. The Cathedral dates back to the 1700s and houses the remains of the conquistador Pizarro. To get a feel for colonial Lima, take a cab to the Plaza de Armas and watch the changing of the Palace Guard in the afternoon. Walk the streets surrounding the Jirón de la Unión for great examples of Spanish-colonial architecture and to get a taste for life in a large South American city. There are many fine museums in and around the city, including the Museo Rafael Larco Herrera, which houses an equally impressive collection of pottery, mummies and textiles from the Paracas and Nazca cultures. The more affluent coastal districts of Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro offer good nightlife and cafés all within walking distance. Limeños (Lima’s residents) are friendly, and the city is filled with excellent restaurants; seafood lovers in particular should be sure to try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known.Note: If you have pre-booked the Peru Culinary Theme Pack, your Lima cooking class will be today and the Cuzco cooking class will be on day 5. As this pack does not include extra on-trip time in Lima, it is necessary to bundle it with a pre- or post-trip stay.
- Days 2-3: Amazon Rainforest
- Take a morning flight to Puerto Maldonado, on the edge of the Amazon. Travel by motorized canoe and start exploring on our hour-long walk to our lodge in the Tambopata Rainforest Area, which holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area.About half of Peru is located within the Amazon Basin, however, due to its isolation, not a lot of it is available to the casual traveller. Puerto Maldonado is the region’s principal city and is serviced by air from the capital and from Cuzco. The town is situated at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers, and is a bustling, booming tropical frontier town. Its principal activities are gold mining, Brazil nut collecting, timber extraction, agriculture and ecotourism. After a brief stop in the town we depart on an afternoon boat trip by motorized canoe to our jungle lodge. Depending on flight arrival times we have either a boxed lunch aboard the boat or lunch upon arrival at the lodge. During our voyage you will have the chance to see bird species typical of the river or forest edge such as Black Skimmers, Pied Lapwings, Capped Herons, Roadside Hawks and several species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers. The Tambopata area includes habitats ranging from the Andean highlands around the rivers' headwaters through some of the last remaining intact cloud forests to the lowland rainforests of the Amazon basin. The area is renowned for its diverse plant and animal populations and include over 1,300 bird species (including 32 parrot species - 10% of the world’s total), 200 mammal species including 4 species of primates, 90 frog species, 1,200 butterfly species and 10,000 species of higher plants—all protected within the reserve. Some of the more famous residents are the Harpy Eagle, the prehistoric looking Hoatzin, tapir, peccary, jaguar, ocelot and playful river otters who live in the area’s oxbow lakes. Our journey to the lodge is by motorized canoe followed by a scenic hour-long walk through the rainforest to the lake and a short canoe ride to the other side. (Your luggage will be transported for you during the walk.) The lodge itself combines native architectural style and materials with low-impact eco-friendly technology. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with mosquito netting for individual beds, flush toilets, showers (no hot water), and kerosene lamps for lighting (no electricity). Local community members make up the majority the lodge staff, including multilingual Naturalist Guides. Here you have the opportunity to learn from them not only about the area’s rich flora and fauna, but also about their extensive practical uses for medicinal plants and other forest plant resources, through traditional techniques for building, fishing, and hunting.(2B, 2L, 2D)
- Days 4-5: Cuzco (1B)
- Travel by boat out of the jungle to Puerto Maldonado for the flight over the Andes and into the heart of Inca territory - Cuzco. On Day 5, take a half-day guided tour of Cuzco to learn the city's fascinating past and present.Cuzco is the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city, and the hub of the South American travel network. The city attracts travellers who come not just to visit a unique destination but also to experience an age-old culture very different from their 20th century way of life; one could easily spend a week just in and around the area. Inca-built stone walls line most of the central streets and you don't have to go far to see other major Inca ruins. It is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend.Every year Cuzco attracts thousands of travellers who come to delve into its noble but tragic past. It is the perfect base for optional explorations around the city and area as well as a range of outdoor activities. Relax and explore this fascinating city, and take time to acclimatize to the high altitude.Cuzco’s numerous colonial churches are one of the city’s most common sights. The Cathedral was started in 1559 and took 100 years to build; it is also one of the city’s greatest repositories of colonial art. Immediately in front of the entrance is a vault containing the remains of the famous Inca historian, Garcilaso de la Vega. Also worth visiting are the churches of La Compañía, La Merced and San Francisco. While most ruins are just outside of the city, the main ruin within is that of the Coricancha, once the Inca Empire's richest temple. Today the ruin forms the base of the colonial church of Santo Domingo. During Inca times this temple was literally covered with gold, but within months of the arrival of the first conquistadors this incredible wealth had all been melted down. It is left to the individual imagination to envision the magnificence of the original structure. There are several good museums in Cuzco, including the Inca Museum, which also houses a small art museum, the Regional History Museum and the Religious Art Museum. Our best advice for exploring Cuzco is to wear a comfortable pair of shoes, arm yourself with a city map and set off to explore.(1B)
- Day 5: Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo (1B,1L)
- Travel with our local guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. An important source of food for the Inca, the Sacred Valley is a lush agricultural region that continues to supply the city of Cuzco with much of its produce. Visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colourful artisan market (market days only). The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. Here we catch our breath and prepare for the hike ahead.Ollantaytambo is your first taste of what lies ahead on the Inca Trail. The town and fortress of Ollantaytambo are strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River Valley. This major ruin site is known as the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. We spend the night in this small town before heading out for the start of the hike the next morning.
- Approximate Distance: 95km
- Estimated Travel Time: 2.30 hours
- (1B,1L)
- Days 6-9: Inca Trail (3B, 3L, 3D)
- Embark on a 4-day guided Inca Trail hike with visit to Machu Picchu. Not interested in hiking? No problem, enjoy 2 free days in Cuzco then catch the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, our base for visiting Machu Picchu. Both options return to Cuzco on Day 9.Hiking Option:The 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is physically challenging but worthwhile, and the excursion is within the ability of most reasonably fit. It is a 44-km (27 mile) hike, with 3 high passes to be crossed, one of which reaches an elevation of 4200m (13776 ft). The trail is often steep, and it may rain even during the dry season. The temperatures at night may fall below zero, so it is important to come prepared.Depart Ollantaytambo for km 82 where we begin our walk in the footsteps of the Incas. Our local crew of porters, cook and guide look after us well for the duration of the hike. Porters carry the majority of the gear for the hike, so those passengers doing the hike only carry a small daypack with water, rain gear, snacks, a camera, etc. As you walk the trail that linked this ancient empire, admire breathtaking views at every step as we move from high plateau areas to dense cloud forest. Depending on the season, you may see a great variety of flora, including miniature and large orchids, and fiery rhododendron bushes. You pass several smaller ruin sites, the first of which is Llactapata. The second day climb the long steep path to Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass. At 4198 m (13769 ft) above sea level, this pass is the highest point of the trek. The second pass of the hike is at 3998 m (13113 ft) where on clear days, we enjoy superb views of the snow-capped Cordillera Vilcabamba. The trail goes through some beautiful cloud forest on the gentle climb to the third pass, where you will walk through a causeway and a tunnel, both original Inca constructions. The highest point of the third pass is at 3700m (12136 ft). On clear days you are rewarded for all this work with beautiful views of the Urubamba Valley below. Soon you reach the serene ruins of Phuyupatamarca, or the 'Town above the Clouds', at about 3650 m (11972 ft) above sea level. We will camp either here or an hour and a half further along close to Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) ruins, a grandiose terraced hillside site, with panoramic views of the valley below and just a short hike from Machu Picchu. On the final day of the hike we climb the steps to the Sun Gate overlooking the peaks that surround Machu Picchu. When the morning is clear, there is no way to describe the feeling of the first views of Machu Picchu, as the mist rises off the mountains early in the morning and the famous site appears in front of you. Following the visit to Machu Picchu, time allowing, travellers can opt to visit the Inca Bridge (15 min walk away) for no additional charge.Machu Picchu is both the best and the least known of the Inca ruins. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors and archaeologists today can do no more than speculate on its function. The local Quechua farmers in the area knew of Machu Picchu for centuries, but it was not until an 11-year-old boy led the American historian Hiram Bingham (who was in search of Vilcabamba) to the site on July 24, 1911, that the rest of the world became aware of its existence. At that time the site was covered in thick vegetation, and Bingham and his team returned in 1912 and 1915 to clear the growth. Over the years, much work has been done on excavating and studying the site. Despite these efforts, many unanswered questions remain.Train Option:Those passengers not able or interested in the hike spend 2 days in Cuzco, then travel by train to Aguas Calientes, where they overnight. Next morning they take the bus to the Machu Picchu entrance and rendezvous with the hikers at the ruins. If you decide not to do the hike we need to know prior to your departure in order to obtain train tickets. There is an additional fee for any changes made once Inca Trail permits are confirmed. This fee may vary depending on the changes that are made to your itinerary. Please advise your agent or G Adventures. Also note that portions of the Inca Trail will be closed for general maintenance during the month of February each year. Also, closures may occur at various times throughout the year due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control. During these periods, any tour affected will hike the Lares Trek.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Amazon jungle and the Inca Trail. It was well organized, our overall tour co-ordinator Raul, the local guides: Gilbert, Maribel for the Amazon jungle; Zacharias for the Inca Trail, were all knowledgeable, enthusiastic, helpful, and lots of fun. Together they made the experience a memorable one. Then of course, there was the jungle, and the trail, or should I say the "trial". I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to my friends. Ellen and Pius Ching.

90%I could never have imagined how much I would grow to love and appreciate group travel. As someone who primarily travels alone, I was able to share the new and exciting experiences I was having with people both similar and different to me. This provided us with diverse perspectives and an opportunity to learned from each other and our previous travel experiences. I really enjoyed myself and would definitely consider doing this sort of travel again, particularly with G Adventures. I owe most of my enjoyment of this group dynamic to my G Adventures tour leader. Hans kept us informed and together. He really went above and beyond the call of duty. I learned much of my information about Peruvian culture from him and he was always friendly and attentive. He worked so hard to get the best local guides, which was really evident to me when I left the group to travel independently. He made it so easy... confirming our flights and even contacting me after I had left the group to offer any assistance and to make sure I felt comfortable and settled. I really feel that Hanz was invested in our individual and group experiences and that he was able to manage being both a guide and a friend. I look forward to keeping in contact with him and my other group members and possibly reuniting at another time and place.

90%This was a life changing experience for my husband, myself and our friends. We all became a small family on the trek. It was a physical and mental challenge but well worth it in the end. Its the first adventure vacation we took and was truly a vacation (despite all the hard work trekking). We all cried, yelled, hugged at the top of Dead Woman's Pass. For the first time we could truly say we were on top of the world. We came back rejuvenated, relaxed, with clear minds and a new view of life. Incredible!

I wish I knew about your company sooner, cause I have been going to Peru for years to see my family and after three or four days their I get bored and just want to come home. 100%My trip overall was amazing, I got sick part way through the trip, and even that could not get me down. The highs of the trip had to be the tours ability to get us into the right hotels that were central, took us to all the right sites, and did so at the right time (Macchu Picchu at 5:45 am before everyone else). The culture and the indescribable energy found in Peru is something I have not felt before and our guide was able to help us harness this. Overall the trip was amazing, and during the actual tour our guide was helpful and knew the places to go and see. You know you have had a great trip when illness does not bring you down.

90%After a week of no electricity in the jungles and the mountains, I am very happy and proud to report that my team (an 8-memeber G Adventures Advanture tour group from the UK, Canada, Australia & USA) had just successfully completed a 4-day hike to Machu Picchu ---- the Mecca of Inca culture! It truly is an exceptional experience of a life time! We hiked 40KMs during the 4 days and reached some high passes above 14,000ft, we saw some wonderful breathtaking views at the high plateau areas, dense cloudforest, a great variety of flora, birds and other animals, the lost city above the clouds, and finally, on day four, the mysterious and magnificent Machu Picchu! Other than the great views and the cultural learning of the trip, the most important lesson that I learned about ourselves is that we are very resilient: on day two, we all suffered from high altitude problem to some degree. We all helped each other out in our own ways. When we finally reached our camp site, I let my body go and realized that I had a spliting headache....I could not eat the nice dinner our cook prepared for us, and I was freezing in the sleeping bag which was nice and warm the night before....breathing was difficult due to the high altitude... I thought I was going to die in the mountains..... But after some IBprophin (spell?) and a good night´s sleep, I was totally renewed. It rained during that night and rained even more heavily during the last two days, it even hailed when we reached the highest pass. I

90%We have never been on a guided tour before but now that we've experienced a G Adventure Trip we would do it again and again. Our lead guide was friendly, helpful. answered all our questions, took care of those who got sick, ran from one place to the other to ensure all our needs were taken care of. Guilanno went above and beyond the call of duty on several occasions, taking us to see things in Cusco not easily available to the tourist, making driver arrangements for us to see parts of Lima when we had a 12 hour layover on our way home, and ordering champagne and a cake for our anniversary when he discovered our anniversary was on the last day of our tour. And these are only a few examples. He did all these things as if it came naturally to him, as if there was no other way to treat a guest in his country. Customer service like this cannot be taught, it comes from the heart and we were more than impressed. We felt that we made a friend and discovered a country we would easily come back to, time and time again. We were also impressed with other guides. In particular the jungle guides (Louis and Carole) and our guide on the Inca Trail (Jose Carlos). They were knowledgeable and shared information and their friendship easily and with a great deal of pride. We felt very lucky to get to know these people and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you so much for this experience. The people your company works with and employs are some of the most professional, knowledge

100%Simon was a great tour leader. The trip went well without a hiccup. Carol and Gilbert, the guides at the amazon, as well as Jarvier, our Inca Trail/Machu Picchu guide were all incredible. They are very friendly, nice, knowledgeable of the areas, the species and the history. Overall, the guides you provided to our group were fantastic and the inca trail porters were awesome. If I had to do it again, I would make sure to have an extra day in Cuzco to visit this amazing city (and to do some shopping). :) Thanks for a trip well planned and a job well done.

I was amazed at how well our group got along and how well we were taken care of. I experienced many things I could not have done on a traditional vacation. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and will definitely consider traveling with G Adventures again.

Then there was Jorge and Raphael in the Jungle who were great and their knowledge was definitely impressive about life in the jungle, flora, fauna etc, - they really did make it special. The Inca Trail - have to mention the porters were amazing - couldn't do enough for us and smiled all the way! The food was fantastic too! Our guides Ronny and Victor were fabulous - could not have done the trail without them. They were amazing and I hope Ronny makes full guide soon - he deserves it!

The information we received before the trip prepared us well, it was nice to have a bit of time to see Cuzco, though I didn't even know I'd want that, I felt like we got to see amazing things and that all the people who were 'in charge' of us really knew their stuff! I always felt completely safe and taken care of. Overall, I was very impressed and very happy!
