Cycle Tanzania

Think navigating downtown streets on a bike is tough?
Think navigating downtown streets on a bike is tough? Try executing a lane-change around a slow-moving zebra or a group of waving schoolchildren. This tour through the Tanzanian savanna merges cultural contact, wildlife viewing and physical activity into a winning brew of adventure. Ride to remote communities set against amazingly beautiful landscapes and challenge your physical limits on the trails of the Great Rift Valley. Your visit here may be short, but the experience will be treasured for a lifetime.
Day 1: Arusha to Monduli Juu (L,D)
Approximate Cycling Distance: 70 km

Take an early morning transfer to the outskirts of Arusha from where you start the days cycle. We cycle through the small villages on the outskirts of Arusha before heading out to the more open plains of the Masai areas.

The route offers a huge vista over southern Arusha and back towards Mt Meru and on a clear day Mt Kilimanjaro is seen in the distance. We head to the village of Meserani where lunch is set up at the Meserani Snake park.

After lunch we transfer to the town of Monduli. From here you continue your cycle to the top of the Monduli Mountains. A good 600 metres of NON technical climbing where you simply drop into your high gear and plod up to the top. Once at the top you have a scintillating downhill all the way into your campsite.

The campsite over looks the Great Rift Valley. As you watch the sun set you can work out the next days route down in the valley, leading across the horizon.
Day 2-3: Monduli Juu to Mto wa Mbo (2B,2L,2D)
Approximate Cycling Distance day 2: 60kms
Approximate Cycling Distance day 3: 70kms

The fruits of yesterdays climb are enjoyed early morning as you follow a great downhill into the Rift Valley. Enormous views all the way down.

The road throws you out onto the Masai plains where you can encounter the Masai herd boys with their cattle and goats. Wildlife is also resident in the region. As you cycle through the acacia bush land, Girraffe, Zebra, Grants Gazelle, Gerenuk and lesser kudu are all living in the area.

Lunch on day 2 is set up under the shade of an acacia tree. After lunch a transfer will take you across the main valley of the Rift before climbing back on the bikes late afternoon for a great flat cycle into the village of Engaruka. The Rift Valley views of Oldonyo Lengai and the eastern wall are with you all day.

Engaruka is a Masai village tucked up against the Rift Valley wall and in the early morning of day 3 we will get the chance to cycle through it before heading on along the foot of the Rift Valley wall.

The dirt road leads us eastwards with a mixture of climbing and flat cycling. You will be used to the cycling by now and enjoy the natural interaction with the locals on route. We reach the village of Selela mid day and drop off at a local shop for a ‘soda' and lunch at the village campsite.

From here there is another 35kms to the town of Mto wa Mbu. We cycle a short way through the edge of the forest and continue along the base of the Great Rift Valley wall. Plains animals can also be encountered on this section of the ride. You arrive into the town of Mto wa Mbu late afternoon.
