Itinerary:
Our Hanoi tour journey begins with a two hour drive from the hectic capital of Hanoi to the province of Ninh Binh, approximately 100kms. Our first destination is Hao Lu, the location of the capital of Vietnam during the Dinh Dynasty (968-980) and early Le Dynasty (980-1009), the ancient citadel once covered 300 hectares of land, however the passage of time has left few remains of this once glorious capital of the Vietnam.

On arrival our local guide will take us through the Dinh & Le Temple, restored in the 17th century the temples are dedicated Dinh and Le emperors and believed to be built on the original foundations of the old palaces from the 11th and 12th centuries. You will delve into our history on this Hanoi cultural tour.

Next jump on a bike for a 12 km bike ride through the area, lime karsts towering above you as you ride along backroads and beautiful scenery... experiences you dont get on other Hanoi tours.

Following our bike visit we stop for lunch at a local restaurant before visiting Tam Coc (which translates as "Three Caves"). The area is often referred to as the Halong Bay of the land due to its spectacular scenery, lime karsts rise up of the ground to tower over the region, and is a Hanoi travel wonder! Here we board rowing boats for a 2 to 2 ½ hour journey through caves, passed local villages along the river system of the Red River Delta. The scenery comprises of lush green rice paddies during the rice growing seasons and surrounding limestone karsts making for a stunning backdrop to the journey and presents many photo opportunities for the keen photographers amongst the group.

At the end of the boat trip, it is time to return to Hanoi as we finish our Hanoi tour.

Voucher exchange details:
Please present your voucher to the local guide at the beginning of the tour.

Dress standard:
When packing be aware that dress standards are conservative throughout Asia, especially outside major cities. To respect this and for your own comfort, we strongly recommend modest clothing. This means clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot Asian climate. In many rural areas in Asia women will need to wear modest clothing even to swim. Singlets, tank tops and topless sun bathing are all unacceptable. When visiting religious sites men often need to wear long trousers and women a long skirt or sarong.

Child policy:
Travellers must be 12 years or older on this trip.

What a fabulous day my family & I had! The tour around the citadel was very interesting, but the highlight of the day was the trip down the river through the limestone karsts. The scenery was spectacular. Our bike was fun & a wonderful way to see the countryside along the winding laneways. Our guide was great too!!!

Hoa Lu is a very nice way to experience the countryside without an overnight stay. We were the only two who signed up for the trip that particular day but we were still able to go. Tour guide and driver arrive promptly at your appointed place to meet and they are very attentive. We visited 2 temples and then headed out on a 12km bike ride. Ride is great but bikes are not consistently in perfect working order. But, no matter, that is part of the charm. We arrive at the water's edge where we catch a boat after a lovely lunch of many wonderful dishes are served. Truly good! Women are typically the boat drivers to the 3 caves. It is a bit leisurely (take sunscreen/hat). but quite nice. I highly recommend this company for anything and this outing is especially appealing as you get away from town and still get to do fun things before going on the boat down the river. definitely recommend spending the day at Hoa Lu!

I really enjoyed this trip. Loved the cycle through the karsts but with temps at 40 degrees 12 Km was a very long way. It was extremely hot and exhausting. Perhaps use of a motor cycle would be better in the extreme heat. Our guide went ahead at the end of the ride and we got shanghaied by a local cafe owner who made out that her establishment was the actual destination (not true). We enjoyed the interaction but the guide seemed a bit annoyed with us as we had wasted quite a bit of time there talking and re-hydrating with lots of water, rather than having lunch where we were meant to be. The boat trip was good too but very touristy with the inherent hard sell of souvenirs and crafts.

Good trip to see some fantastic scenery near Hanoi. Lots of variety on the trip with a boat trip, cycle trip, temples. It's a long drive from Hanoi so be prepared for a big day.

Had a great day on the urban adventure. The transport provided was excellent and our guide was extremely knowledgable giving us insights not only into current vietnamese life but also the historical context of the area we were visiting. The bike ride meandered through some fabulous scenery, and wasn't too taxing in the heat. The afternoon boat ride was the highlight. Lunch between the bike ride and the boat trip was a wonderful buffet which showcased a lot of the local cuisine ! All and all a great experience and one we will recommend to our friends and family !

I liked the fact that the tour was above and beyond the standard tours offered by tour offices in Vietnam. We went to Hue shortly afterwards and did a horrible tour booked through a competitor with 45 people on it where we spent more time in craft factories / shops than we did looking at the sights. Urban Adventures was more expensive but absolutely worth it for the more personal experience. The Cu Chi tunnel tour was also fantastic with a really interesting guide. The Mekong Delta tour was not as good with too much time on a mediocre fruit farm / watching mediocre folk musicians etc... and not enough time in the beautiful small waterways (only 20 minutes in the entire day).
