Be tempted by delicious treats at a Jewish delicatessen, step into history books at Pennsylvania’s oldest church, wander through charming streets infused with an Italian heritage, enjoy snacks at a world-renowned market, marvel at intricate mosaic art, soak up bohemian vibes on Philly’s South Street.

Itinerary:
Begin your journey at one of the oldest Jewish delicatessens in the city, where you may enjoy breakfast before the tour or some of the wonderful treats from the bakery to take with you on the tour.

Leaving here, walk through some of the delightful streets and past local homes of Philly’s Queen Village neighborhood. There will be a chance to see some of the 3,000 murals that decorate the city before reaching Gloria Dei (Old Swede’s) Church, Pennsylvania’s oldest. At this National Historic Site, learn about both Revolutionary War soldiers and ordinary citizens from colonial times buried in its cemetery, and walk into 300 years of history at this beautiful church.

Next, walk on to the Sparks Shot Tower, America’s first shot factory. After a short break at one of the area’s charming local coffee shops, continue on through the Bella Vista neighborhood. Here, experience Philly’s strong Italian heritage, and if you’re lucky watch a game at a park designated for local bocce leagues. A short stroll from here brings us to the bakeries, spice stores, cafes, Italian food stores and market stalls of the Italian Market.

Take the time to mix with business owners and residents, taste some samples and hear stories of early immigrants to the city. It was also here that Rocky ran through the streets on one of his famous training runs. Take this opportunity to enjoy lunch and shopping at the market.

After lunch walk on to Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, showcasing the mosaic art of Isaiah Zagar. This amazing place includes a fully mosaiced indoor gallery and a massive outdoor labyrinthine mosaic structure. Finally end the tour on South Street, famous for its bohemian mix of clothes, jewelry, gift and music stores. Stay on after the tour finishes to shop, eat and drink on Philadelphia’s most eclectic street.

Chuck was a great tour guide and I would be happy to take another urban adventures tour soon. We live in the neighborhood and learned a lot about the history and culture of the local area, and had a great time doing it.

This trip overall was excellent. I learned such interesting things that I never knew about Philly in the past. My only comment has to do with the length of the trip...we walked around for four hours with virtually no break. The website indicated there would be lunch, but that was incorrect. If an hour lunch was added into the tour (with the overall length still being four hours) I think it would have been perfect.

Chuck was a great guide - he was very knowledgeable and was very good at getting to know what members of the group were interested in learning about and seeing and personalizing the experience. I really liked being introduced to the shop owners in the Ialian Market and we ran into a couple of very interesting and knowledgeable locals that stopped to talk to us. It was a great way to spend a beatiful Saturday morning!

We all absolutely loved Blake's knowledge, demeanor, and flexibility toward our group. He extended the tour past 4 hours to accommodate our group and we truly appreciated it. We loved the tour and would be excited to do another Philadelphia tour the next time I have relatives in town.

Despite bad weather, we had a wonderful experience. Our guide was knowledgable, friendly and lots of fun. The South Philly tour introdcued our group (which included one lifelong Philadelphia resident) to parts of Philadelphia we never would have discovered on our own. Can't wait to do the other tour.

I went on this tour with a friend/journalist from California who was here for the weekend on Sunday, April 10th and we had a fantastic time. I wanted to check out the tour before my whole family (visiting from Los Angeles and Miami) went on it later in May (they just did the tour this last friday, May 13). It was everything we had hoped it would be. Our tour guide was kind, thoughtful, engaging and we were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour that day, so we had a private tour! We loved the immigration stories and we even had the chance to go into an open house and see a house built in the 1700s from the inside... Absolutely fantastic tour.

Blake was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable, friendly. We were all ladies and he was very thoughtful about taking bathroom breaks. He had a lovely rapport with shop owners and a well known artist. I feel like he gave us lots of fun facts and fact facts and when we wanted more, he had more. Really enjoyed the tour and we'd like to take another one that Blake is leading!

I really enjoyed taking part in the Essence of South Philly tour. Our guide was very enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy what she was doing. In just four hours we got to see and experience many different parts of South Philly, from the homes and history of the neighborhoods, the Italian market, and the mosaic murals and Magical Gargen of Isaiah Zagar. A very enjoyable four hours and we got lucky with nice weather. Thank you for a nice time.
