Day 1: Arrive in Surabaya
We rendezvous at the airport in Surabaya, the capital of East Java province. KE Land Only package services begin with a single timed airport transfer to the group hotel. Depending on arrival time we will stay either in Surabya city or in Malang which is one hour’s drive away. Note that meals are not included on this day. Overnight at the group hotel.
Day 2: Drive via Thumpang to Ranupani
After breakfast we have some free time before driving to Tumpang where we transfer to 4X4 vehicles for the final leg of the journey on dirt roads to Ranupani, the last bastion of habitation on the edge of the volcano massif, Semeru. Arriving in Ranupani we will have time for a short walk around the lake before dinner. We stay tonight in a Losmen . 3 - 4 hours transfer, 1 hour walking. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and diner (B,L,D).
Day 3: Semeru approach trek
We set off on the approach trek to Semeru which at 3676 metres, is Java's highest peak and one of its most active volcanoes - it has been in a state of almost continual eruption since 1967. We trek for a total of around 6 hours, through pleasant foothills and lush forest, with a stop for a picnic lunch on the shores of Lake Kumbo. Our camp is on the small plateau area known as Kalimati. Approximately 600 metres of ascent. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Ascent of Semeru
We have a pre-dawn start, aiming to reach the upper slopes of the mountain in time to see the sunrise. Setting off by the light of our headtorches, we hike on a steep trail through dense forest, reaching the tree-line towards 3000 metres. Above the last vegetation, we find ourselves on a huge dome of loose volcanic ash, where it's largely a case of two steps forward and one back. At the summit, the sunrise can be fantastic, especially in conjunction with the regular eruptions from the summit crater. Clouds of dust and cinders are ejected along with sulphurous gases - an awe-inspiring place. After soaking up the views, that extend across most of East Java, we make our descent. It is considerably easier to descend the scree of ash and we are soon back at our camp, where we can take an early lunch, before continuing our hike back to Ranupani. where we stay another night in the losmen. 9 hrs walking. Ascent / descent 1100m. / 1700m. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Transfer to Cemorolawang and climb Bromo
After breakfast in Ranupani, we drive to Cemorolawang, a village situated close to the caldera of the volcano, Bromo (2329m). This is another very active volcano, that erupted in a major way as recently as the year 2000. It is sacred to the Hindu Tengger people who live in this region. In the afternoon, we make the short ascent (350 metres) to the top of Bromo and complete the scenic circuit around the crater rim. Returning to Cemorolawang after our 4-hour hike, we overnight in a mountain resort. + / -350 metres. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Drive via Pananjakan to Bremi
We climb our next volcano by 4x4 vehicle, driving in the pre dawn night to the top of Pananjakan (2775m) where we watch another glorious sunrise. The panorama at sunrise, across Pananjakan's crater, include our previous volcano summits of Bromo, and Semeru. After enjoying this spectacle, we continue the drive to Bremi close to the Agropuro group of mountains. We stay overnight in a basic hotel. Total drive time of 6 hours. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Trek to Lake Taman Hidup
Over the next four days we will make a continuous trek away from roads and habitation, walking alternately through savannah, cloud forest and forests of pine and Casuarina. This is the longest continuous trek (around 35 km) possible in Java and along the way we will climb the twin peaks of Argopuro (3088m) and Renggansi (3028m). We start today by trekking through plantations of coffee, tobacco, cocoa, before entering the rainforest. We pass waterfalls with some opportunity for swimming and arrive in the late afternoon at Taman Hidup (2000m.) which means ‘living lake’ in the local language. This area is frequented by wild pigs and also deer. We set up our camp beside the lake. 5 hours walking. 1000m. ascent. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Trek to Cisentor
We continue our trek climbing steeply at first through the cloud forest which surrounds Taman Hidup. The forest is very dense and quite dark even in bright daylight and the trees are covered with a variety of mosses. This is the home of the long-tailed black monkey. As we gain height the forest gives way to the high savannah. It is a good idea to wear long sleeved shirts and trousers for this section as the grass is quite tall and can be abrasive. The terrain becomes very undulating today with some steep ascents and descents as we trek through forests of pine and more savannah to reach our next camp at Cisentor (2400m.). We set up the tents near a stream. 6 - 7 hours. +800m. / - 400m. (B,L,D)
Day 9: Ascents of the twin peaks of Argopuro and Renggansi
The trail crosses several dry beds to a small stream on the open marshland of Rawa Embik which is reached in around 2 hours from camp. A steep and dusty track climbs through Casuarina shrubs and trees for a further 2 hours to a saddle between the peaks of Argopuro and Renggansi. Turning right we complete the ascent to the tree-covered summit of Argopuro in a further 30 minutes. Descending once more to the saddle we now climb in a further 20 minutes to the subsidiary summit of Rengganis. This top is 60 metres lower than the main summit, but has better views with a spectacular panorama east to toward the Ijen plateau and Mount Raung. On the summit of this peak are the remains of an ancient Hindu temple which is possibly 900 years old. Having taken our photos and scrambled amongst the ruins we return to the saddle and all the way back to the camp at Cisentor. After a rest here we continue our trek, climbing up out of the valley before beginning a descent through pine forest interspersed with open meadows. White marker posts lead the way down to our next camp at Ciskaur (2200m.), an old Dutch airstrip which was used by the Japanese in World War II. 6 - 8 hours. +800m. / -1000m. (B,L,D)
Day 10: Descend to Baderan and transfer to Mount Raung
We have a long hike out (approximately 14 km) today as we continue our descent. We begin the day walking through the dense forest which lies within the National Park and is therefore protected. At the boundary. both the protection and the forest itself abruptly end and we continue through agricultural land to the village of Baderan at 900m. We meet our vehicles here and transfer to the foot of Mount Raung near Bondowoso. We stay overnight in a losmen. 9 hours. – 1300m. (B,L,D)
Day 11: Trek to forest camp
We begin our next trek above Sumberwringin at 1239 metres walking through scattered pine forest on a gentle ascent. There are occasional views of Agropuro rising above the clouds to west. We make camp in a small clearing at 2347m. 5 - 6 hours. +1100m. (B,L,D)
Day 12: Ascent of Gunung Raung
Making a pre-dawn start we walk by the light of our head torches continuing the gradual ascent to the tree line just below 3000 metres where there is a small memorial. From here the ascent continues, more steeply and is mostly on bare rock. We aim to reach the crater rim at 3180 metres for sunrise and are rewarded with spectacular views over the crater walls. At over 2 kilometres in diameter, Gunung Raung has the largest crater in Java and is one of the most remote of its 3000-metre plus peaks. The actual summit is a little higher at 3332m but is only accessible to rock climbers. Care is needed for the initial descent to the tree line but after that the trail is easy and we should be back at camp for lunch. After lunch and a good rest we descend all the way back to Sumberwringin where we stay another night at the losmen. 9 - 10 hours. + 900m / - 2100m. (B,L,D)
Day 13: Transfer to Kawah Ijen
After our long tough day yesterday we can enjoy a relaxing start and leisurely breakfast today. Around mid-morning we set off for our drive to Sempol passing through beautiful rainforest. We stop along the way to visit one of the largest coffee plantations in Java which also specialises in the growing of strawberries. The plantation is owned by a co-operative. After lunch we continue our drive reaching Paltuding at the foot of Kawah Ijen where we make a camp. Total driving time today is approximately 3 hours. (B,L,D)
Day 14: Trek to Kawah Ijen crater and transfer to Bali
The Ijen Caldera is 15 kilometres (9 miles) across and encloses a number of volcanoes including Kawah Ijen. We are up early again, to see this amazing landscape in the best light and make our descent on foot to the shores of the world's biggest acid lake whose waters are about the strength of car battery acid! Clouds of sulphur dioxide swirl around and this will limit the amount of time we can stay here. As well as being a natural wonder this is the site for one of the world’s most bizarre occupations. Teams of workers extract sulphur from a crude system of pipes driven into the richest sulphur deposit on the south side of the lake. Men known as 'sulphur slaves' carry loads of up to 90 kgs each on the tough 4 kilometre climb up to the crater rim and down to the nearest road. We will spend some time with these people - an unforgettable image of the holiday. Returning to our vehicles by late morning, we have a 4 hour drive to the most easterly point of Java where we catch the ferry across the Bali Strait to Lovina Beach on the north coast of the island of Bali. Here we check into our beach resort hotel. 3 hours walk, +/- 350m. (B,L,D)
Day 15: Morning free, afternoon transfer to Jimbaran Bay
The morning is free to enjoy the beautiful black sand beach. For those who don’t mind another early start, there is the option to go out on a fishing boat to see the dolphins, or it is possible to go snorkelling on the nearby reef. These activities can be arranged (at extra cost) by the hotel. After lunch we drive for approximately 4 hours to another beach at Jimbaran Bay where we check into our hotel for our last night’s stay. The rest of the day and evening is free for shopping or swimming in the sea or just relaxing by the hotel pool. (B,L)
Day 16: Free morning then transfer to Denpasar Airport
The day is free to further enjoy the delights of the beach and town. In the late afternoon we transfer (30 minutes) to Denpasar Airport, where KE land only group package services end. (B)
