Cotopaxi Trekking

Experience the hacienda culture of the Andean highlands and explore Inca sites during an active trekking circuit near the Cotopaxi National Park and in the Condor Biosphere (a 5.4 million acre conservation project consisting of public and private land).
Hike in the shadows of the Cotopaxi Volcano and follow the ancient roads of the Incas during our 5 day/4 night trekking trip. Experience the hacienda culture of the Andean highlands and explore Inca sites during an active trekking circuit near the Cotopaxi National Park and in the Condor Biosphere (a 5.4 million acre conservation project consisting of public and private land). Enjoy tasty food, good stories around the fireplace, and hot showers provided by the hacienda hosts, and there are two nights of deluxe camping during this fully-supported trip (you just carry a daypack, and we carry the rest!)

For travelers with additional time to spend in the Condor Biosphere, we invite you to combine your trekking trip with our Ecuador service projects that promote conservation and community development in the region.

Recommended Budgeting:
  • $40 Meals not Included
  • $45 Airport Departure Tax
  • $10 Park Entrance Fee
    Notes:
    • Please note that the circuit for this trip is relatively flat with gradual ascents and descents, but it is at an elevation of 3,000-4,000 meters above sea level. An extra night in Quito or in the highlands is advised to acclimate, and we can help make extra arrangements.

Arrive Quito and overnight.
Day 2: Hacienda El Porvenir (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we depart Quito and travel south along the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" towards Cotopaxi National Park. We arrive at the Hacienda Santa Rita Ecological Reserve to start the trek to Hacienda El Porvenir. Your luggage will continue by vehicle to the hacienda, and we continue on foot through the Santa Rita Reserve on the flank of the Pasochoa Volcano. Stunning views can be seen along the way of surrounding valleys and mountains as we hike across the paramo, the high Andean grassland. Arrive at El Porvenir, a fully-functioning hacienda set high in the Andean paramo with spectacular views of Cotopaxi. Enjoy a nice traditional dinner and relax next to the fireplace.

Duration of Trek: Six hours
Total distance trekked: 12 km
Altitude: from 3,000 to 3,500 meters
Lodging Hacienda El Porvenir
Description Hacienda El Porvenir is located one and a half hours from Quito, on the slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, and is a mere four kilometers from the northern entrance of Cotopaxi National Park.
Day 3: Pucará Del Salitre Inca Site (B,L,D)
Today we will hike to Pucará Del Salitre, a strategic military fortress of the Inca Empire that was used to monitor the roads that led to the Amazon Rainforest and Latacunga Valley. The old road or “incañan” will lead us to our campsite. Along the way we will have the chance to see herds of alpaca. Our campsite will be set-up already when we arrive for a comfortable night under the stars.

Duration of Trek: Seven hours
Total distance trekked: 17 km
Altitude: from 3,500 to 3,900 meters
Day 4: Hacienda El Tambo (B,L,D)
Today we trek to El Tambo, a pre-colonial Inca refuge and stockyard that hosted and supplied the Inca travelers that moved through the area on the road to the jungle. We stay at the hacienda that has the original handcrafted stone floor of the Inca tambo. This magical place is surrounded by volcanic sand and has fantastic views of Cotopaxi.

Duration of Trek: Seven hours
Total distance trekked:  18 km
Altitude: from 3,900 to 3,650 meters (highest point 4,000 meters)

This marvelous farm is located in a magical setting surrounded by many volcanoes, such as Cotopaxi 5897 m (19347 ft), Quilindaña 4878 m (16000 ft) that presides over it, and the majestic Antisana 5704 m (18709 ft).
Day 5: Santo Domingo Lake (B,L,D)
After breakfast in Hacienda El Tambo, we trek through an area that was flooded with lava during the last Cotopaxi eruption. Today’s trek will be exciting as this area has fighting bulls. A “Chagra”, or local cowboy, will accompany us. Don't wear red (just kidding)! We camp tonight near the Santo Domingo Lake.

A truly amazing experience that will be in our hearts and memories forever! The haciendas were amazing. The comfort, surrounding atmosphere and views, and the people running the haciendas were wonderful. We particularly loved being at the El Tambo because of it's rustic nature and location. The staff at El Porvenir were amazing too. The cook we had for the camp grounds was great as well. We truly enjoyed all the meals, packed lunches and drinks (welcome teas, etc) The food was great. The food was plentiful. We never even finished any of our packed lunches because they gave us plenty to keep us fueled the entire day. All the soups and meals were hearty and comforting and plentiful. Could not have asked for better!
