Big Island Spectacular

Discover both the Big Island's beauty and its volcanic fury!
Discover both the Big Island's beauty and its volcanic fury. Tour the most geologically active environment on earth-the famous Kilauea volcano, which has been continuously erupting since 1983. View lava flows and black sand beaches. Experience all the awesome spectacle of Madame Pele's lava and volcanic badlands, then explore the lush rainforests of the Hamakua Coast. The towering sea cliffs open into the dramatically deep and meandering valleys of the Kohala Mountains. Beautiful waterfalls cascade thousands of feet into the rainforest below and remnants of ancient Hawaiian settlements are still visible. This is the perfect finish to the ultimate Big Island adventure. This tour was voted #1 by The Travel Channel as the "World's Best Helicopter Thrill."

Tour routes and sights visited may vary according to wind and weather conditions. Volcanic activity varies hourly.
  • American Eurocopter EC130 "Eco-Star":
Every seat offers greater personal space, first-class individual seats, and expansive glass for exceptional visibility. This is the world's newest and most expensive model of touring helicopter, and the first specifically designed for air tours. It is utilized by only two companies in Hawaii: Blue Hawaiian and Sunshine Helicopters

The EC130 is also available in a 7-seat configuration to accommodate families.

Note that Sunshine Helicopters has renamed their EC130 "Whisper-Star." The American Eurocopter EC130 is powered by a Turbomeca Arriel 1B engine rated at 848 Shaft Horse Power.
    • American Eurocopter AS350 "A-Star":
Less personal space than the Eco-Star but with a similar open cabin design for 180º views from each seat. Somewhat less viewing glass than the Eco-Star. This model is utilized by the majority of air tour operators in Hawaii, including Blue Hawaiian, Sunshine, Air Maui, Alexair, Makani Kai, Jack Harter, Island Helicopters, Safari Aviation and Hawaii Helicopters.
The AS350 is the most utilized tour helicopter in the world, and all of them look virtually the same. The only significant difference is the type of engine employed. There are four variants of this model:
      • AS 350B2: Used by Blue Hawaiian and Safari Aviation. This is the most powerful model A-Star and is an original manufacturer model. Employs the Ariel 1D1 engine rated at 712 Shaft Horse Power.
      • AS 350BA: Used by Air Maui, Makani Kai, Jack Harter and Island Helicopters. This is an original manufacturer model. Employs the Ariel 1B engine rated at 641 Shaft Horse Power.
      • AS 350FX: Used by Sunshine and Makani Kai Helicopters. This is not an original manufacturer model but utilizes an FAA approved conversion to the Honeywell LTS 101 600 engine rated at 650 Shaft Horse Power. AS 350 AllStar: Used by AlexAir. This is not an original manufacturer model but utilizes an FAA approved conversion to the Allison 250-C30M engine rated at 650 Shaft Horse Power.  The cabins in all of these AS350 models are quite similar, but Blue Hawaiian's A-Stars afford increased comfort – with BOSE® aviation-grade noise-cancelling headsets, passenger microphone, inside camera integrated to the live tour video, and more. Safety enhancements for the pilot include a state-of-the-art terrain awareness warning system and emergency pop-out floats to enable safe landing on water.

        Spectacular Views and More!
Kilauea, a great bowl sunken in a plain,is a mountain exceeding 4,0000 feet in altitude, closely connected with Mauna Loa. Geological evidence indicates that the Kilauea Crater appeared approximately 1,500 A.D. It developed soon after a 60 year long eruption from the 'Aila 'au shield just east of Kilauea Iki, which ended in about 1470, after flooding much of Puna with lava flows. The caldera formed after a series of explosions that radiocarbon ages date to about 1500.A.D.

Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano, when measured to its sea base, is the highest island mountains in the world. If Mauna Kea's height (13796') is measured from its base (18,000 feet below sea level), it surpasses even Mount Everest, and is the world's highest mountain (31,796). Geologic evidence suggests that the volcano last erupted around 1650. Legend says Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa were the domains of two opposing goddesses, Poliahu and Pele respectively. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions were produced from their violent rivalry. Photo #4 captures the three of the five major volcanoes on the Big Island. Hualalai is seen in the foreground, Mauna Kea is to the left and Mauna Loa is located on the right.

Akaka Falls cascades 420 feet into a stream-eroded gorge. The park encompasses 66 acres of lush tropical forest and two scenic waterfalls. A pleasant, moderately challenging half-mile loop takes visitors through a lush rain forest of philodendron vines, wild orchids, bamboo groves and hanging heliconia. The park entrance is at the end of Akaka Falls Road, Highway 220, 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu.

The Kohala Coast Sea Cliffs, the truncated remains of the shield that once extended at over 1/2 mile into the ocean, is dominated by blunt cliffs that rise 1,300 feet above the ocean. The cliffs are carved out by stream cut canyons forming a series of narrow coastal hanging valley with limited accessibility.
