Spectacular Views and More!
Waipi'o valley is the largest of the seven North Kohala Amphitheater Valleys. Along the coast is a pristine black sand beach, valley walls soaring up to 2,000 feet and hundreds of breathtaking waterfalls cascading down the cliffs onto the valley floors. The road down into the valley floor is very steep. Outside of having a four wheel drive, only a hike down the 25 percent grade, and windy road is only other means to travel down the valley. Waipi'o means "curved water" and is often referred to as the "Valley of the Kings" because it was once the home to many rulers of Hawaii, including King Kamehameha the Great.
According to Mo'okini Family genealogical chants this Heiau was built in 480 A.D. under the direction of Kahuna Nui Kuamo'o Mo'okini and dedicated to the God Ku. The descendants of the Mo'okini Family have been it's guardians for the past 1500 years. For centuries the Heiau was a "closed", reserved exclusively for Hawaii's kings. In Kohala it was the focus of religious life and order. If you go to Mo'okini Luakini Heiau, please show your respect.
Kawaihae is home to many fishing and scuba excursions that depart from the western part of the Big Island. This small harbor is home to numerous sport fishing and scuba dive boats. It one of the two major harbors on Hawaii. Kawaihae is 35 miles north of Kailua - Kona, has been used since 1937 various shipping purposes, first as a berthing for interisland steamers, and then by ships after 1959 when it was developed into a deep - draft harbor. The first ships to bring horses and cattle to this island were docked here. Since then the harbor has been dredged and enlarged to handle much larger ships. Overlooking the harbor is great views of Pu'ukohola Heiau, Mauna Kea, and Maui.
One of two huge gaps in the sides of Haleakala "crater". A terrific hiking trail follows near the base of the right wall of this gap. The trail leads through the crater with access to Paliku, Kapalaoa and Holua cabin areas, as well as connection to Sliding Sands and Halemau (Switchback) trails.
Haleakala crater is actually an eroded depression with many cinder cones formed by subsequent volcanic eruptions. Haleakala, which means in Hawaiian, "House of the Sun", is the worlds largest dormant volcano. The crater measures 21 miles in circumference, is 3000 feet deep and 19 square miles in area. The entire island of Manhattan could fit inside!
