Kahului's "Dream City" was developed by Alexander & Baldwin in the 1950s and 1960s. This development provided housing for the Company's employees of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, Maui Agricultural Company and Kahului Railroad (encompassing 28 plantation camps). The original "Dream City" Master Plan called for 1,000 acres for residential lots, 550 acres for streets, 400 acres of parks and schools, 21 acres for commercial use, and 30 acres for churches, cemeteries, public use. Today, the Kahului/Wailuku area is home to over half of Maui's resident population. This is also the only deep water harbor on Maui and most of the good come through the warehouses at this harbor.
The central valley lies between two mountains, East (Haleakala) and West Maui. The largest sugar plantation in the world spreads across the valley floor made possible by an abundance of water carried by irrigation from the slopes of East Maui. This irrigation system was an engineering marvel of the 1800's.
Kula is at the heart of upcountry which encompasses a belt of homes from 1100 - 4000 feet elevation on the western slope of East Maui mountain. Great views from almost any location, upcountry is 5 - 20 degrees cooler than the beach (depending upon elevation).
Haleakala crater is actually an eroded depression with many cinder cones formed by subsequent volcanic eruptions. Haleakala, which means in Hawaiian, "House of the Sun", is the worlds largest dormant volcano. The crater measures 21 miles in circumference, is 3000 feet deep and 19 square miles in area. The entire island of Manhattan could fit inside!
