USA & Canada Express

Travel south back over the border for a short stint in New England, seeing the best of Boston, feasting on seafood in Cape Cod and coming to rest in coastal Connecticut. Great parks, exciting cities, delicious regional cuisine and a whole lot of adventure.
This Overland adventure looping through Canada and the US features some of North America's most celebrated cities. Begin in pulsating New York before getting a taste of American history in DC. Feel the roar of Niagara Falls, hike through Algonquin National Park and become a Francophile in Montreal and Quebec City. Travel south back over the border for a short stint in New England, seeing the best of Boston, feasting on seafood in Cape Cod and coming to rest in coastal Connecticut. Great parks, exciting cities, delicious regional cuisine and a whole lot of adventure - experience all this and more during 15 days of fun.
Day 1: New York
Welcome to the USA!

You can arrive at any time on Day 1 as there are no scheduled activities. You can check in after 3pm but if you arrive early you can store your luggage. You won't be meeting your leader or your group until the morning of Day 2.

New York is the city that never sleeps. Grab a slice and see those famous sites - Times Square, Broadway, Central Park and the Empire State Building.

As there's no time spent in New York City on this trip, we recommend you arrive a few days early to see the sights. Consider doing our one-day sightseeing tour of New York (see www.urbanadventures.com).
Days 2-3: Washington DC
There will be an important welcome meeting at 8am this morning. Meet in the hotel reception/lobby. We'll be collecting your insurance details, kitty and next of kin information at this meeting so please ensure you have all details on hand to provide to your leader.

Head south to Washington DC, stopping to visit Philadelphia along the way. The journey will cover 400 km and, depending on the busy east coast traffic, can take anywhere from 4-5 hours, including a lunch stop. Founded in 1682, Philadelphia is home to the Liberty Bell and it was here that Thomas Jefferson proclaimed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The nation's capital, Washington DC, is easily explored by foot. Don't miss the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and National Air and Space Museum, as well as many other museums of interest. In the evening you can stroll through Georgetown, the centre of the city's nightlife.
Day 4: Niagara Falls
Traverse the states of Pennsylvania and New York en route to Niagara Falls (640 km).
As one of the most well-known waterfalls in the world, Niagara Falls is a truly majestic sight not to be missed. There are numerous viewpoints at which we can appreciate the pure power of this amazing set of falls.

There's no better way to get a feel for their true immensity than to approach them from the water. So after donning raincoats, head straight up to the falls at the Horseshoe Basin on the thrilling 'Maid of the Mist' boat ride.

Included Activities
  • Niagara Falls
    Optional Activities
    • Maid of the Mist boat tour, Niagara Falls - USD11.20
Day 5: Toronto
Cross the Canadian border and travel on to Toronto (150 km, approx 2 hrs). Toronto is one of Canada's hippest and cleanest cities. Situated on Lake Ontario, there's no lack of options available to explore this active city. You can get a view from the CN Tower, take a bike tour to Toronto Island, catch a Maple Leafs game or simply stroll the many shopping alleys.
Day 6: Algonquin Provincial Park
Travel east to Algonquin Provincial Park (320 km, approx 3.5 hrs).
Algonquin Provincial Park stretches across 7,725 sq km of wild and beautiful lakes and forests, swamps and rivers, cliffs and beaches. We have the opportunity to explore this fantastic region by canoe or on foot.

Included Activities
  • Algonquin Provincial Park
    Optional Activities
    • Canoe rental (full day), Dwight - CAD23.98
Days 7-8: Ottawa/Montreal
Drive through vast wilderness areas to Ottawa (approx 300 km).
Canada's capital, Ottawa, has countless city attractions including museums, neo-Gothic government buildings, memorials and heritage buildings.

One of our favourites is the Canadian Museum of Civilisation, where you can you travel through life-sized townscapes and environments from across the country.

Head on to Montreal (approx 200 km).
Situated at the confluence of the St Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, Montreal has a genuine French atmosphere and beautiful historic architecture. This is a compact island city, great for walking, and you can easily explore its vibrant neighbourhoods on foot. Montreal is also home to more than 80 ethnic communities, and enjoys an outstanding reputation for gourmet dining.
Day 9: Quebec City
Drive into the heart of French Canada - Quebec City (270 km, approx 3 hrs). Quebec City is one of Canada's oldest cities and features North America's only walled historical downtown district (Vieux Quebec). It's understandably compared to its French homeland and still retains a distinctly old-world feel of Europe. Walk the cobbled streets, ducking down little alleys, gaze at the famous Chateau du Frontenac or take in a movie at the IMAX theatre - and don't forget to try your best French as it's commonly spoken here.
Days 10-11: Acadia National Park
Drive to Acadia National Park (450 km, approx 6 hrs).
Acadia is famous for its natural beauty, wildlife and spectacular coastline. It offers almost 200 km of hiking trails - ask your leader for more information on your hiking options.

Take a sea kayaking tour to enjoy the sunset (approx 2.5 hrs) or just to relax on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Included Activities
  • Acadia National Park
    Optional Activities
    • Sea kayak sunset tour, Bar Harbor - USD48.00
Day 12: Boston
Head south along the coast to Boston (approx 5 hrs). Boston is a historically important city that was founded by the Puritans in 1630, and you'll have the chance to stroll along the British colonial streets. Boston is also famous for its sporting events including baseball, basketball and ice hockey, not to mention its popular college teams. Visiting Faneuil Hall marketplace or the nearby Italian District is a great way to get a real taste for this popular city.
Day 13: Cape Cod
Drive from Boston to Plymouth (65 km, approx 1 hr).
Plymouth is where the pilgrims landed on the Mayflower in 1620. You can visit a replica named the Mayflower II. Continue on to Cape Cod and Provincetown (125 km, approx 1.5 hrs). Enjoy the charms of Provincetown with its art galleries and beautiful beaches. Board a boat for a whale-watching tour.

Optional Activities
  • Whale-watching tour, Provincetown - USD41.00
Day 14: Clinton
Drive west to the beaches of Connecticut (300 km). Walk around Mystic, Connecticut, an idyllic old New England fishing village, which featured in Julia Robert's first movie, Mystic Pizza. You can also visit Mystic Seaport and the Museum of America and the Sea, which is one of the nation's leading maritime museums. Continue on to nearby Clinton where we spend the night.
Day 15: New York
Drive to Manhattan in the heart of New York City (330 km, approx 4 hrs).
Our groups aim to return to the New York hostel by 3pm. As there are no planned activities today, you are free to depart any time after our arrival. However, please do not book flights before 8pm as traffic can sometimes delay our groups.

As there's a great deal to do in New York City, we recommend staying a few extra days to make the most of this exciting city. If you need help booking extra accommodation, our reservations team will be happy to assist. Consider doing our one-day sightseeing tour of New York (see www.urbanadventures.com).
