Vietnam Northwest Loop

The remote mountains of northwest Vietnam are home to some of South East Asia's most rugged terrain, beautiful scenery and colourful hill tribes.
The remote mountains of northwest Vietnam are home to some of South East Asia's most rugged terrain, beautiful scenery and colourful hill tribes. Leaving the graceful boulevards of Hanoi behind, travel to Mai Chau before traversing the bumpy mountain roads to Son La, Dien Bien Phu, Lai Chau, and Sapa. Experience breathtaking mountain views and meet friendly locals along the way. If you want to get off the beaten track in Vietnam, this is the trip for you.
Day 1: Hanoi
Xin chao! Welcome to Vietnam.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm on Day 1. You can arrive at any time as there are no activities planned until this important meeting; please ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

The capital of Vietnam is a charming city with a population of around four million. Hanoi is famous for its beautiful lakes, shaded boulevards, verdant public parks and its thriving old town centre, which is an architectural museum piece with blocks of ochre buildings retaining the air of a 1930s provincial French town. As Vietnam develops to compete with other South-East Asian countries, the beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake reflects the contrasts of modern office buildings, old Buddhist temples and the tangle of ancient streets in its still surface.

If you arrive early, why not get your first taste of Vietnam exploring the lovely, laidback capital. You can stroll the tree-lined boulevards to get a sense of the old days, wander the Old Quarter to uncover ancient temples and a rich, religious culture or head to the Temple of Literature, an oasis of calm right at the heart of Hanoi.

Day 2: Mai Chau
Depart Hanoi for the Hoa Binh province and the town of Mai Chau (approx 3 hrs). Along the way, pass fields of tapioca and sugar cane, as well as rice paddies. The peaceful town of Mai Chau is situated in a stunningly beautiful valley surrounded by verdant green mountains and is famed for its breathtaking scenery and friendly hilltribe peoples.

Spend the afternoon walking through the various ethnic minority villages in this spectacular area. Enjoy the local hospitality in our simple stilt-house homestay in the village of Poom Coong. Our amicable hosts will cook you a fabulous home-cooked meal and there may even be a chance to sample some of the local rice wine produced in the region.

Included Activities
  • Mai Chau villages
    Accommodation
    • Homestay (1 nt)
Day 3: Son La
Travel west to Son La. Along the way we'll stop in the small township of Moc Chau and have a brief look around this little hill town. Son La is located in a scenic valley, inhabited by Thai, Muong and H'mong minority people. This area is historically important for its involvement in the Vietnamese struggle for independence from France during the first half the 20th century.

Accommodation
  • Hotel (1 nt)
Day 4: Dien Bien Phu
Visit the remains of an old French prison and enjoy a dip in the local hot springs. Board our vehicle for the drive to historic Dien Bien (approx 170 km). It's a long journey but it's worth while as the scenery is dramatic. We'll encounter many ethnic minority people along the way.

Included Activities
  • Old Son La Prison
    Accommodation
    • Hotel (1 nt)
Day 5: Phong Tho
Take a tour and gain an insight into the history of the region. It was here that the French planned to lure the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, into the valley by sending 16,000 French troops as bait. The French however didn't count on the brilliant leadership of General Vo Nguyen Giap who somehow managed to place the Vietnamese artillery on the surrounding ridges. From March until May 1954 the Viet Minh pounded the French positions until the French capitulated with the loss of 3,000 men. It's estimated that the Viet Minh lost more than twice that number. Our visit includes the haunting Dien Bien Phu Museum and A1 Hill. Travel on to Phong Tho.

Included Activities
  • Dien Bien Phu Museum and A1 Hill
    Accommodation
    • Hotel (1 nt)
Days 6-7: Sapa
Drive east to Sapa - a remote area where you can expect some of the roads to be fairly rough and uneven, but the advantage is that this a less visited area with fewer tourists along the way to spoil our views of the beautiful and dramatic scenery. We'll have opportunities to stop and take photos and visit a Mang Village on the side of Nam Na River and Binh Lu market. We stop at Binh Lu for a short trek through endless green tea plantations to visit an amazing village of the Red Flower H'mong people. A highlight of the drive will be our journey up to the top of Hoang Lien Son Pass. With a height of over 2000m above sea level, this is mountain scenery at its best and we also get the chance to see the highest peak in Indochina - Fanxipan Mountain.

Set off on a short trek to the hilltribe village of Cat Cat (approx 2.5 hrs). Situated in an idyllic valley covered with a patchwork of rice terraces, Cat Cat is home to the H'mong people. The H'mong originated from China and emigrated to this region of Vietnam about 300 years ago. They are easily recognisable due to their dark clothing, usually blue or black. The dye is fashioned from the indigo or hemp plants that are native to the area. H'mong women wear long aprons with embroidered waistcoats and have their hair rolled up into a turban-like hat, whilst the men wear a black skullcap, long waistcoat and loose trousers. As we walk to the villages nestled in the valley below Sapa, we'll meet some of the local minority people on their way to and from Sapa to trade at the markets.

Board an overnight train to Hanoi. Although conditions are basic, overnight trains are a true Intrepid experience and the best way to travel long distances with the locals. Sleeper trains typically have four berth compartments (occasionally six berth depending on seasonal variations), which have bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. On occasion, passengers of different genders will be required to share a compartment and there will be occasions where you'll be sharing with local travellers or travellers who are not part of your group. Most trains have a dining carriage serving simple food, but some travellers take the opportunity to stock up on fresh bread, cheese and fruit prior to departure.

Included Activities
  • Cat Cat village walk
    Accommodation
    • Hotel (1 nt), Overnight sleeper train (1 nt)
