Ozark's Syllamo & Buffalo River Adventure

Thousands of acres of lakes and streams and hundreds of miles of trails add up to big adventure in north central Arkansas' Ozark National Forest.
Thousands of acres of lakes and streams and hundreds of miles of trails add up to big adventure in north central Arkansas' Ozark National Forest.

In the heart of the Ozarks, you'll find the state's tallest mountains carved and shaped by limestone bluffs, faults, cracks, caves, and bridges. The International Mountain Bike Association has also recently found this place, declaring the area's newly-built Syllamo trail system an "IMBA Epic." Lacing together the White and Buffalo Rivers, these "epic" mountain bike trails reveal other epic adventures as well.

Hiking through old growth hardwood forests, we find misty fern beds and exposed ridges. Canoeing on America's first national river, we paddle by natural springs, bridges, and waterfalls. Caving at Blanchard Springs, we uncover multiple levels of wild and living caverns. And, in visiting the local mountain village, we are met with down home hospitality and good times at Mountain View, the folk music capital of the world.

Meeting Information:
The group will meet one day one at 11am in Mountain View, Arkansas, at the Best Western Fiddler’s Inn. You may also take the Escape shuttle ($75 roundtrip) from Little Rock. The shuttle will leave the Holiday Inn Airport East at 8:30am on the first day of the tour. We will return to Mountain View around 3pm on the last day. The shuttle will arrive in Little Rock around 5:30pm.

Day 1: Biking - The White River Trail
After meeting in Mountain View we’ll shuttle to the trailhead. After lunch and introductions, our adventure begins on the White River Trail. This is an exciting and scenic section of the Syllamo Trail with views looking down the White River.

Total Mileage | 8 miles
Camp | Blanchard Springs Campground
Inns | Inn at Mountain View
Day 2: Biking - Scrappy / Bald Trail
Today’s ride will be a fun and challenging ride along the Scrappy Mountain Loop singletrack. This ride drops down to the White River crossing numerous streams and creeks, climbs up the “staircase”, and makes its way through the heavily forested backcountry of the Ozarks. Meeting with our support vehicle for lunch, we finish our day with a fast and fun descent to Blanchard Springs Campground.

Total Mileage | 20 miles
Camp | Blanchard Springs Campground
Inns | Inn at Mountain View
Day 3: Canoeing - Buffalo National River
An hour and a half shuttle upstream takes us to Tyler Flat. Here we trade bikes for canoes (it’s the Arkansas thing to do). The 27 mile trip from U.S. 65 to Buffalo Point (still referred to by many as "the old state park") is a long, fun float where the scenery's great, and the rapids are interesting but easy enough for first timers. Along the way we pass through layers of sandstone, limestone, natural springs, caves, natural bridges, and box-like canyons.

Total Mileage | 27 miles
Camp | Blanchard Springs Campground
Inns | Inn at Mountain View
Day 4: Biking - Jacks/Bad Branch Loop
The newest section of the Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail System is on the agenda for the day. With moderate climbing and rolling terrain, this is one of our favorite rides in Arkansas! We climb from camp 1100 feet to Petrie Cave Hollow and ride a beautiful section of buff singletrack overlooking northern Arkansas. Our ride is met halfway for lunch and ends with a long descent back to camp.

Total Mileage | 25 miles
Camp | Blanchard Springs Campground
Inns | Inn at Mountain View
Day 5: Spelunking - Blanchard Springs Cave
Our last day takes us into the depths of Blanchard Springs on our Wild Cave Tour. The newest of the Caverns tours takes us to the undeveloped sections of the middle level. If you thought mountain bikes were the only way to get dirty on this tour, you guessed wrong! Be prepared to get dirty and have fun and expect to climb very steep slopes, crawl on hands and knees, pass under low ceilings, and travel through red clay. The tour ends at the Titans, a group of tall spectacular columns. After our stop in Mountain View, we will shuttle back to Little Rock.
