The Selkirk mountains, considered one of many ranges within the larger grouping known as the Columbia Mountains, the Selkirks extend from the northern Idaho/Washington border northward into British Columbia. Their jagged peaks, steeply angled flanks and year-round snowcaps are Selkirk trademarks; this range is home to absolute world-class skiing in the winter and an unparalleled playground in the summer. Most importantly, removed from any major metropolitan area, the region’s lightly travelled roads create a perfect venue for cycling.
The Selkirks assemble in Colville, WA, and we’ll provide a van shuttle from the Spokane airport early afternoon of Assembly Day. We’ll head east from Colville on Day 1, climbing gently through the Colville National Forest, followed by an outstanding descent into the Pend Oreille River Valley. We’ll continue along the river beyond Newport into Idaho and an overnight in Priest River.
Day 2, we’ll ride to Sandpoint and join the Lake Pend Oreille Scenic Byway as it skirts the shoreline of the beautiful lake. We’ll spend the night in Clark Fork, ride into Montana early morning of Day 3 along the Bull River chain of glacially carved lakes. We’ll visit Kootenai Falls that afternoon on our way to Libby , where we’ll spend the evening.
We’ll trace the course of the Kootenay River on Day 4 to Bonners Ferry and then head north through Idaho’s Panhandle into Canada and our overnight in Creston, BC. A short ride from Creston early morning of Day 5 brings us to the southern shore of magnificent Kootenay Lake. We’ll trace the lake’s eastern shoreline to Crawford Bay and then board the ferry that will carry us across the lake to Balfour. Back on the bikes, we’ll continue along Kootenay’s shoreline to trendy Nelson, where we’ll spend the night. Day 6, it’s on to historic Castlegar at the concluence of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, forming one of the world’s great freshwater sources. We’re headed for Trail on this day and an incredible dinner at the Collander.
For those of you hungering for a final epic climb on this, our final day, we’ve got one for you. We’ll roll you out of bed early morning on Day 7, and climb memorably to Rossland well before the mid-day sun takes its toll. The cry should be “Rossland for lunch”because we’ll finish with one of those not-to-be-forgotten downhills back into the U.S. and along the Columbia River to Kettle Falls and Colville. We’ll then shuttle back to Spokane where our program concludes.
