Cambodia’s ancient Khmer temples at Angkor represent one of the most impressive and well-preserved ancient sites in the world. And even though they’ve survived for centuries, Cambodia’s political stability and the construction of the high-end Grand Hotel d’Angkor make now the best time to see them in person. This addition to our Laos to Vietnam trip dedicates two full days to exploring the temples—and you’ll need them both to fully appreciate these incredible man-made wonders.

Day 1-2: The Temples of Angkor

THIS MORNING, WE AVOID THE CROWDS OF ANGKOR Wat and do things in reverse; venturing into the heart of the Cambodian countryside to explore the local Khmer temples of present-day Cambodia. Our ride will give us a great appreciation for Cambodia before we head into the ancient kingdom this afternoon. After lunch at our hotel, we will head into the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat, where our local guide will describe this awe-inspiring temple that has defied time and nature for over 700 years. Tonight, we join together in the historic Elephant Bar for cocktails and to share our stories of this amazing day before dining at one of our hotel’s marvelous restaurants. On our second day, we will extensively explore the temples of Bayon and Bantai Srei with our local guide, who will bring the stone celestial dancers to life for us. This morning, we arrive in Bayon by traditional means– elephants–and explore this exquisite Buddhist temple before hopping on our bikes and exploring the park on two wheels. Our bike trails are lined by a jungle of silk-cotton and strangler fig trees. Once upon a time, the only traffic that passed this way were the majestic elephants. We will then head back to our hotel to enjoy lunch and the magnificent grounds of our palatial French-colonial hotel (as well as its luxurious spa and pool) before heading out to the lady temple of Bantei Srei, taking in its beauty when the crowds are thinner and the light is at its best. This evening, we head into town for dinner at the trendy new Hôtel de la Paix.

Grand Hotel d’Angkor, Siem Reap

Description

For us, the only place to stay in Siem Reap is the Grand Hotel d’Angkor. Run by the Raffl es Group it is the area’s fi nest colonial landmark and provides the perfect base for our temple visits. At the end of each day’s explorations, your elegant guestroom awaits you—not to mention the historic Elephant bar, fi ne restaurants, a beautiful pool and spa. The Grand is tastefully appointed with Art Deco-style furnishings and Khmer art objects.

Day 3: Bangkok

On our last morning we will head out to explore the wild jungle temple of Ta Prohm. Famous for the jungle that still grows around it, this is an awe-inspiring homage to both nature and mankind. We will bike from here through the park, passing the temples of Bayon, Angkor Wat, the Elephant Terrace and the gates of Angkor Thom one last time on our way back to the hotel. Afterwards, there’s time to change and pack before we head out to the airport to catch a midday flight to Bangkok. Upon landing, you will have time to relax at the hotel, or enjoy it’s spa. Tonight’s dinner is on your own; your guides will be happy to make suggestions. Tomorrow morning, we begin our Laos to Vietnam Biking trip, continuing our adventure in this enchanting region.
