Cambodia - River Cruise and Cycle Expedition

Explore history, countryside and culture of Cambodia by bike. This unique journey goes beyond the Temples of Angkor and the sights of Phnom Penh as you cruise by boat down the mighty Mekong, disembarking daily the cycle amongst the sights, sounds and people of rural Cambodia.

This unique journey goes beyond the Temples of Angkor and the sights of Phnom Penh as you cruise by boat down the mighty Mekong, disembarking daily the cycle amongst the sights, sounds and people of rural Cambodia. Four days are then spent cycling along the beautiful coastline bordering the Gulf of Thailand.
Day 1: Siem Reap
Arrive in Siem Reap.  You will be met at the airport by your guide and transferred to the hotel.

Our cycling adventure starts with an easy 10km ride from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat to explore the temple complex and enjoy a picnic lunch.  After lunch we cycle the circuit between Angkor Wat and Phnom Bakeng, stopping at the Death and Victory Gates, Terraces of the Elephants and Leper King and Srah Srang.  Watch the sunset from Phnom Bakeng before we transfer by road back to your hotel.  Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 2: Siem Reap- Rolous Temple Group
Today we will spend a full day in the saddle exploring the countryside and hidden temples.  Riding on quiet country roads we will enjoy the peaceful ambience of Cambodia's countryside as we pass through villages and ride past Khmer pagodas, lotus ponds and rice paddies.  We will stop to visit the Rolous Temple Group, the former capital of the Angkor Regime in the 9th century.  Admire the incredible architecture of the temple ruins before cycling back to town.  Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 3: Siem Reap – ChnokTru
After breakfast we cycle the short distance from our hotel to Tonle Sap Lake.  Here we board the boat that will be our home for the next 5 nights as we make our way from Tonle Sap down the Mekong to Phnom Penh.  After loading ourselves and our bikes onboard we will cruise to Chnock Tru the largest floating village on Tonle Sap.  Enjoy lunch, dinner and the night onboard the boat.

Day 4: Kampong Chnang – Kampong Tralach
Enjoy breakfast on board as we cruise to Kampong Chnang, one of the largest fishing ports on Tonle Sap. We will explore the village and the surrounding area by bike.  As well as fish farming the area is famous for its pottery and the products produced from the Thnot (sugar palm) tree.  The mellow tasting caramel-coloured sugar is sold in large cakes and it also used to produce palm wine.  Returning for lunch on our boat we cruise to Kampong Tralach and disembark to visit the village here before returning to our boat and continuing to cruise downstream toward Koh Dach.

Day 5: Koh Dach – Kampong Cham
Following a wholesome breakfast on board, we and our bikes disembark at Koh Dach, a beautiful island well known for its traditional silk weaving.  Our time is spent touring and visiting villages of the local Khmer people where they weave the most wonderful silk scarves. We then return to our ship for lunch and continue cruise to Kampong Cham. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 6: Kampong Cham
After breakfast, we cycle to the Bamboo Bridge and local market.  We then board a local boat to visit Wat Hanchey, a temple dating back to the 8th century and the Chenla Empire. Located on a hilltop, there are stunning views of the surrounding area.  At the temple we will partake in a traditional water blessing given by local monks. We return to our ship around lunch time.

As the boat cruises leisurely towards Kratie the Ship's Chef will teach us how to book some popular Khmer dishes. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 7: Kratie
Watch the beautiful sunrise on the Mekong River as you eat breakfast.  The morning is spent cruising with lunch onboard before arriving at Kratie. 

We disembark with our bikes to explore Kratie, a charming little Mekong River town which is known for sightings of the rare Irwaddy dolphins.  During our tide we visit the pagoda of Wat Roka Kandal.  You can swim in the river if you wish.  Ride back to our boat for dinner than the night.

Day 8: Phnom Penh
Today is our last day of our cruise.  We spend the full day cruising to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. We will bid a farewell to our friendly host and transfer to our hotel.

Day 9: Phnom Penh City Cycling Tour
After breakfast, we explore this bustling city's major sights by bike. The tour will include the National Museum of Khmer Art, the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, the ToulSleng Genocide Museum, and the Killing Fields. Overnight in Phnom Penh.

Day 10: Phnom Penh –Kampong Trac- Kep
After a good breakfast transfer to Kampong Trac where we will begin another leg of our cycling journey.  Cycle 47kms to Kep, a small fishing town on the Gulf of Thailand. Formerly a popular French resort town, the seaside resort was practically abandoned to the wilderness, and the lush forest conceals the ruins of gracious colonial villas. After checking in at our hillside hotel, we'll head to the secluded white sand beaches of Koh Tonsai.

Day 11: Kep – Kampot- Ream National Park
Following breakfast, we then continue our stunning trip in the saddle to Kampot, is a small provincial capital situated on the banks of a river with a relaxing and shady boulevards. There are still many French colonial buildings and it has a tranquil atmosphere.  Lunch in town before we carry on pedalling along a quiet road, with lush green backdrop of the Borkor Mountains to Ream National Park.  Here we finish our ride and transfer a short distance to Shihanoukville.

Day 12: Shihanoukville
We start the day with a short transfer to Ream Kong Keng, Sihanoukville's airport. From here, cycle alongside beautiful Otres Beach. The off-road ride on a gently rolling road lined with coconut palms takes us through valleys and local villages. There are plenty of opportunities to interact with the friendly locals and admire this picturesque countryside beach town. Arrive back in Shihanouville in the early afternoon and the rest day is yours to relax.
