Germany - Bavaria - Lakes, Mountains & Fairytale Castles

We stay in lovely lodgings in contrasting surroundings at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, in a sleepy spa town and on the shore of Lake Chiemsee.
Bavaria, Germany's largest federal-state, covers an area larger than its neighbour, Austria. We explore a small part of this historic region with an itinerary that reflects the wide variety of landscape and culture.

We hear the story, of King Ludwig ll, sometimes known as The Dream King and sometimes as The Mad King; we visit two of the great fairytale palaces that form his legacy â we take a private boat on Lake Chiemsee to the colossal palace of Herrenchiemsee and we walk to the more modest, but nonetheless opulent, jewel of Linderhof.

We stay in lovely lodgings in contrasting surroundings at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, in a sleepy spa town and on the shore of Lake Chiemsee.
DAY 1: Garmisch-Partenkirchen
We meet at 3.30 pm at the Railway Station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and take the mountain railway, the Zugspitzbahn, to the charming alpine village of Grainau. We walk to the lovely Hotel Waxenstein where, after time to enjoy the stunning mountain views from the balcony of our rooms or a swim in the indoor pool, we meet for an Introductory Talk and a Welcome Dinner.
Lodging Romantik Hotel Waxenstein
Description The hotel has 100 years of history of hospitality from its beginnings as a simple tavern to the last 30 years when it has been managed by the Toedt family. The hotel is known for it's fresh and seasonal cuisine. All rooms in the Romantik Hotel Waxenstein have been renovated and individually furnished. Guests have free Wi-Fi access, telephone calls to German landlines and use of the wellness area. The hotel has a full service spa.
DAY 2: zugspitz
We set off after breakfast and walk above the village of Grainau to Lake Eibsee, facing the Zugspitze, and continuing around the lake we tackle the lower slopes of the highest mountain in Germany. Later in the afternoon we reach the little mountain railway which will take us up to the peak at nearly 3000 meters. After absorbing the breathtaking views across Bavaria and into Austria we return over the glacier by cable car to the middle-station and walk back to the hotel after a long but satisfying day on the hills.

DAY 3: Ettal
We bid Farewell to the Zugspitze and to the Hotel Waxenstein we embark on our exciting walk through the mountains to the valley of Ettal, where we will visit the Schloss Linderhof, one of the palaces built by the Dream King, Ludwig ll, before continuing to our hotel in the village of Ettal, belonging to one of the largest (of many) monasteries in Bavaria (where they still make their own beer), for dinner and overnight.
Lodging Klosterhotel Ludwig der Bayer
Description The "Klosterhotel Ludwig der Bayer" and the Ettal Monastery are nestled in the heart of the Ammergau alpine region. It is part of Germany’s largest nature-preserve, replete with impressive mountains, picturesque lakes, serene and colorful meadows and fresh, healthy mountain air. This place of stunning natural beauty also a place of custom and tradition, of art, culture and culinary delights that will make our stay an unforgettable experience. Rooms are tastefully and comfortably appointed, with satellite TV, telephone, shower or bathtub, and many other amenities. The hotel has a swimming pool and a full-service beauty and health spa.
DAY 4: Oberammergau
We visit the beautiful monastery church next to our hotel and we set off from Ettal to the village of Oberammergau, famous for the Passion Play performed every 10 years. We continue our journey along the valley to the village of Unterammergau in the Ammertal Alps. Later in the afternoon we travel on to a more westerly part of Bavaria and arrive in the spa town of Bad Aibling, to stay at the pretty Hotel Lindner.
Lodging Hotel Lindner
Description The knights have long since gone...but fortunately the charm of a medieval castle has remained. There are 16 double rooms and 10 single rooms in Romantik Hotel Lindner. It is stylishly furnished and very cosy. With luxurious bathrooms, cable TV, Internet access, WLAN, telephone, radio, hairdryer. The restaurant serves s cuisine with Bavarian roots influenced by light Mediterranean dishes. Vegetarian food options are a speciality as are a profusion of sweets! The ingredients have been carefully selected. They usually come directly from the producer, e.g. lamb from Gut Georgenberg, eco-meat from Herrmannsdorfer, fish from Scharmann´s trout ponds and free-range eggs.
DAY 5: Bad Aibling
We spend the day in the Bad Aibling area, walking in the Voralps with panoramic views of the Austrian Alps in the distance. A short transfer brings us finally to our lakeside home of the Yachthotel Chiemsee, right on the banks of the Lake Chiemsee.
Lodging Yachthotel
Description The Yachthotel Chiemsee is situated directly on the western shore of the Lake Chiemsee between Munich (approx. 85 km) and Salzburg (approx. 65 km). You can reach the wonderful and historic city of Salzburg, with the birthplace of the classical composer W.A. Mozart easily by car or train. The provincial capital Munich is approx. 70 minutes away from Prien and offers many cultural highlights and even many shopping possibilities. The region Chiemgau is one of the oldest and most beautiful cultural regions in Germany - especially the Dhiemsee with its islands "Herrenchiemsee" and "Frauenchiemsee". The hotel has a spa and fitness center and its lakeside location makes a perfect base for watersports and swimming in one of the cleanest lakes in Germany.
DAY 6: Herrenchiemsee
King Ludwig is our theme for today and we cannot leave Bavaria without visiting the fulfilment of his life-long dream, his Royal Palace, the fabulous Herrenchiemsee, the Bavarian Versailles, built on an island in the lake which we reach by private boat. It is here that his tragedy comes into a full circle. Today we will also savour all the best of the Bavarian countryside, walking by the lake, with the mountains almost within arm’s reach.
