Biking Hanoi to Luang Prabang

Escalating the most spectacular mountain range in Vietnam—if not the whole of Southeast Asia—this Hanoi-to-Luang Prabang bike trip presents stunning views and rare cultural encounters.
This 12-day tour explores the majestic mountainous regions of two magical countries: Vietnam and Laos.

Vietnam, where our adventure begins, is a land of stunningly varied landscapes - shimmering rice fields, mysterious jungles, and radiant beaches - compose Vietnam’s postcards, but the northwestern region is home to spectacular mountains and valleys. Amidst the crests rests Indochina’s highest peak, Mount Fansipan,  as well as the fascinating hill station of Sapa, a colonial retreat created by the French.

Where mountains dip to valleys, discover a bewildering number of minority tribes, most of whom retain unique traditions. Named Montagnards, or mountain people, by the French these colourful folk still live as they have for centuries, forging a life high in the mountains. Easily distinguished by their brilliant tribal costumes, the Hmong, Dai and Tsao are the most conspicuous of the hundreds of different ethnic groups who reside in this region.

We’ll cross into Laos by way of Vietnam’s historic Dien Bien Phu. This city earned a prominent placement in history books when the Vietnamese revolutionary, Ho Chi Minh, led his People’s Liberation Army to a bloody but decisive victory over the French colonizers in 1954. Mountainous Laos has a population of 6.5 million people, yet the country spans an area roughly the size of the United Kingdom. As we ride from the border you will see the local life is mainly agrarian, with bamboo huts clustered together to form small villages that are home to a rich mixture of ethnic groups.

Riding here is like witnessing a country emerging from a time capsule. Isolated from Asia’s tourist phenomena until recently, Laotians retain a rare innocence and charm. More than that, the country
maintains the most pure of all the Southeast Asian cultures in the region.

For these reasons, Laos is considered fondly Southeast Asia’s Shangri La, the earthly paradise. The mountain scenery on this tour is nothing short of spectacular and we will finish in Luang Prabang, one of the most atmospheric cities in Asia. With its faded French colonial elegance, Luang Prabang is a wonderful place to rest and explore.
Day 1: Hanoi
We meet in Hanoi (meeting instructions will be sent at a later date - please contact us if you need rooms or flights from Saigon or Bangkok). You have time to explore the city before we transfer to the railway station to catch the King Express Train. The train is a very civilized affair with compartments sleeping four and a carriage where you can buy food and refreshments.
Lodging Overnight sleeper train

Day 2: Lao Cai to Sapa
On arrival in Lao Cai we unload the bikes and rendezvous with our support vehicle. We then make the short transfer to the former hill station of Sapa where we will have breakfast. In the afternoon we have a ride to get those legs moving. We start the ride from Sapa and head downhill for almost 20 km. Once into the valley we hit some off road and some undulations and we pass many minority villages. Depending on time we can ride or transfer back.
Lodging Chau Long Hotel
Description Welcome to Chaulong Sapa Hotel. Sapa is located in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions in North Vietnam, close to Chinese border.
Day 3: Sapa loop
Starting from the hotel we head off road to the village of Ta Phin. We then head out on a loop that traverses forested hillsides and takes in many of the minority villages of the Sapa area. The scenery is a good contrast to that of the first ride and it is a tad more challenging. There may be sections on this ride where you’ll have to carry your bike but they will not be long or difficult. Due to the nature of the trail the ride cannot be supported the whole way by jeep but there will be spots along the trail where we can rendezvous with the support vehicle.
Lodging Chau Long Hotel
Description Welcome to Chaulong Sapa Hotel. Sapa is located in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions in North Vietnam, close to Chinese border.
Day 4: Sapa to Tam Duong
Today we ride out of Sapa and do the 16 km road climb up to Tram Ton pass – the highest road pass in Vietnam at 2,000 m. We then have a 20 km descent into a beautiful valley. The countryside is truly wonderful as we pass tea plantations and all inhabitants are from minority tribes. We overnight in the small, friendly town of Tam Duong.
Lodging Muong Thanh Hotel
Description The Muong Thanh Hotel, Dien Bien Phu is close to the city centre, a stroll away from local restaurants, shops, bank offices and fresh market. Dien Bien Phu Museum with its artifacts and exhibits is a short taxi ride away. The good value Muong Thanh Hotel has a good standard and recreational facilities which include steam room, sauna , massage and karaoke. Rooms are simple, unfussy, yet comfortable with adequate facilities and service with pleasant atmosphere.
Day 5: Tam Duong- Than Uyen
We start the day with an hour transfer to Huoi Ke, from where we'll start our scenic but challenging ride to Than Uyen. The grades are above average today as the winding road twists through the mountains and go over two passes. We'll have a picnic lunch along the way as the hamlets we pass ware too small for restaurants. We overnight at the small and rustic town of Than Uyen at a simple guest house
Lodging Government Guest House
Description The Government Guesthouse was formerly the Residence of the French Governor of Tonkin. Tonkin is the historical name for northern Vietnam. Today it is used as the guesthouse for VIP visitors of the Vietnamese government.
Day 6: Than Uyen- Tuan Giao – Dien Bien Phu
Following an early breakfast we start to ride from our hotel. As we go over three passes today – Muong Mun, Huoi Long and Meo Hoa – the day will entail plenty of ascents and descents. It will take us considerable energy to ride over the three passes, but we will be rewarded with stunning views along the way. It is advisable to wear discreet riding shorts as we’ll be passing through many ethnic tribal villages. At the town of Tuan Giao, we will transfer transfer 2.5 hours to Dien Bien Phu.
Lodging Him Lam Hotel
Description Lies on among picturesque and peaceful seating of North - Western moutain and forests named Him Lam Mountain which famous all over the world with the victory of Dien Bien Phu battle.
Day 7: Dien Bien Phu Rest Day
After all those hills your legs deserve a rest and what better place to do it than in the history-rich city of Dien Bien Phu. We’ll visit the war museum which has interesting displays about the climactic battle of the First Indochina War between French Union forces and Vietnamese Viet Minh communist revolutionary forces. From March until May 1954 the Viet Minh pounded the French positions, killing up to 3,000 men, though it's estimated that the Viet Minh lost more than twice that number. The massive French defeat effectively ended the war. There’s also a local market to explore. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 8: Dien Bien Phu – Border - Muang Khoua
Today we say goodbye to Vietnam and hello to Laos. We start the day with a gentle 3 km warm up before the road starts to rise. The trail twists and turns for 24 km before we hit the Laos border and complete immigration formalities. We’ll swap crews and begin the journey to the crossroads town of Muang Khoua on dirt roads. The ride is beautiful as we cross streams and cycle through remote villages mainly comprised of Red or Black Thai ethnic tribes. The trail is also mainly downhill, a welcome respite from the hills in Vietnam. Tat Muang Khoua is built on a steep hillside at the confluence of two rivers, offering plenty of great viewpoints.

Description
Day 9: Muang Khoua - Udom Xai
More of a mixture in scenery today, as we start with jungle that gives way to rice paddies, creating a pleasant scenery change. The road again rises and falls and has some small climbs, but nothing too strenuous. We ride along broken road and dirt tracks which double as thoroughfares for the local people (the population here is made up of an astonishing 23 ethnic groups), so we share the trail with all manner of colorful vehicles and livestock – a glimpse of real rural life in Asia. Towards the end of the day we have a long down hill into the town of Udom Xai (also known as Muang Xai), which has a large market where the various languages of the area mingle along with the smells of the produce.
Lodging Dansavanh Hotel

Day 10: Udom Xai - Nong Kiau
We are now in the central highlands of Laos and there are some spectacular views across the rugged mountain landscape in an area that suffered extraordinarily heavy bombing during the Secret War against the Americans in the early 1970s. The morning sees us climb over 1000 m into the mountains to Hmong villages in a region that few people ever visit. In the afternoon we have a breathtaking descent through some of the region’s last remaining rainforest. Although this is a hard day, it is also very rewarding as the views and sense of nature are nothing short of breathtaking. You’ll have the option to skip the last 30 km along the river valley to Nong Kiau. Whether you choose to cycle or ride in the van, we’ll end at our comfortable and charming guesthouse that overlooks the river.
Lodging Nong Kiau Riverside
Description Nong Kiau is a small rustic town by the bridge where the Route 1 to Sam Neua and Vietnam crosses the Ou River. This little settlement is blessed with probably the some of the most attractive natural settings in Northern Laos.
Day 11: Nong Kiau – Luang Prabang
The last long ride of the tour! Cycling an undulating road we head west along the Nam Ou River, which makes for a very scenic ride. After about 30 km we get to Pakbeng, where we transfer by private van as we rode this section the day before. Returning to our bikes we head south to the historic town of Luang Prabang. This road follows the Nam Ou River and has some interesting villages along with the way. The road undulates the whole way with a couple of short climbs of 1 to 2 km, but they are not steep.

I LOVED the riding - some of the best I have ever done. The roads in Vietnam were terrific!! Laos was a bit rough, but with mountain bikes it was no problem. We really did not have much traffic at all. I was very pleasantly surprised.

The tour guide and the support team in Lao were excellent. They worked hard to give us the best possible experience. They explained all about Lao culture. we were particularly lucky to cycle through Hmong communities during their New Year festival and the guide and drivers explained the customs and pointed out aspects to us as we went past.
