The mighty Mekong flows 4,350 kilometres from the Tibetan plateau through China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam before flowing out into the South China Sea. In South Vietnam it spreads into tentacles and tributaries, forming nine mouths that are absorbed by the sea. These tributaries are what make the delta so fertile and the region one of Vietnam's highest producers of rice, vegetables and fruits.
Cycling through rice paddies, orchards, along and over a myriad of small irrigation canals will let you see a part of Vietnam that is quite unique. The flat and lush scenery is unlike anything else you will see in Vietnam. This adventure starts with a ride from Cai Lay to Cai Be on the quiet back roads, lunching on an island before staying with a local family.
As water is everywhere it is unavoidable that we will board a few boats on this trip, but it will give you an up close perspective of Vietnamese life on the river. Day three takes us through the Khmer area and we see much evidence of this in the architecture of temples and the many Khmer people who populate this area. The last day we take in the Phong Dien floating market and many of the cottage industries before we head back to Saigon in the afternoon.
Our route is designed to take us off the main roads as much as possible. We explore scenic back roads on the way to all our destinations and once away from the main roads, cycling in Vietnam is a wonderful experience as the bicycle is still the most common form of transport.

My wife and I took the 3 Night/4 day Mekong Tour with SpiceRoads. The tour we felt was a very good experience, and this was achieved by the following; A very good tour guide, Le Mai Nhat Hai. He spoke good English, he was informed and he was very good with clients from four different nationalities. He had the ability to make people welcome and was always ready to answer questions Good logistics - the vehicle support was good and the driver very friendly and helpful. Pickup in Saigon was on time and return to Saigon was also with sufficient time for us to make our connections. Good accommodation on every night. The catering was excellent and we enjoyed a diversity of Vietnamese food.

80%Tico made the trip for us. He is an absolutely stellar guide and we would gladly, happily go on any trip that he guides in the future. He is a national treasure of Vietnam and a major asset for SpiceRoads. He kept us very happy the entire trip, entertained and informed, he dynamically adjusted the route to meet our preferences, and he was just a joy to be around. A perfect guide in every way.

80%We had a fantastic trip which left 13 March. Our guide Thai had excellent English and was able to answer any and many questions. We could not have asked for anyone better. He provided us with so much information and had such fantastic local knowledge. He chose the food well for what he thought we may like. Our driver was a very gentle lovely man. His English was not as good but that did not matter as he was not our guide and he tried hard. We were grateful to see him at the refreshment breaks and he always provided us with icy cold water and snacks. The cycling trip was the highlight of our 2 week stay in Vietnam and I would certainly look to do a similar trip again. I have been cycling for several years at a low level of about 30km per week, but my cousin was not a cyclist but trained well for the 5 weeks prior to leaving and managed well.
