Mexico Volcanoes - Orizaba Express - 6 days

An ascent of North America's 3rd highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, for those with limited time. Our goal is to safely summit Orizaba with proper acclimating time, but in the shortest time away from home as possible.
An ascent of North America's 3rd highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, for those with limited time. Our goal is to safely summit Orizaba with proper acclimating time, but in the shortest time away from home as possible.

Our Orizaba express itinerary has been refined after many years of operating climbs in Mexico. We feel we have the best itinerary to ensure proper acclimating and to give you the best possible chances for success. Be very wary of companies advertising trips up Orizaba of 5 or less days...that is simply not enough time to safely acclimate.

From Mexico City we travel to La Malinche (14,600 ft) where we begin our acclimating at a comfortable government-run resort with easy hikes and a summit of this fun and rewarding peak. On the way, we quickly visit the famous pyramids of Teotihuacan.

Then we journey East to the base of Pico de Orizaba where we take an exciting 4WD trip to Orizaba base camp. While on Orizaba we will stay at the Piedra Grande hut at 14,000 ft on the flanks of Pico de Orizaba.

Climbing Pico de Orizaba involves the use of basic mountaineering skills with ice axe and crampons on steep snow. While not a difficult mountain climb, climbing Orizaba does require good stamina. Your mountain guide will review all the skills necessary to summit this spectacular Mexican Volcano.

We provide private ground transportation throughout Mexico and our lodging choices are among the finest with your comfort in mind. Our trips are fully supported by a local logistics company. We feel the combination of highly-trained American mountain guides and a local logistics company is by far the best way to climb internationally. A great Mexico mountain climbing trip for those with limited time and high altitude climbing goals.

We guide more Mexico volcanoes climbs than any other international destination. Our groups are small which allows us to give personilzed attention. Go with the guide service that specializes in Pico de Orizaba climbs.

This seasons Mexico Volcano trips are being led by CAG/IAG owner and IFMGA/UIAGM internationally certified guide Dave Miller.
Day One
Morning meeting and travel east of Mexico City to overnight at a rustic mountain resort (10,000 ft) on the flanks of La Malinche to begin our acclimating. For comfort, we stay in cabins at the government-run resort complete with hot showers and a fireplace! On the way, we visit the famous pyrmids of Teotihuacan and the Pyramide del Sol, the world's 3rd largest pyramid. We will also try to have lunch at a fine Mexican restaurant located down inside a cave
Day Two
We wake up not too early and summit La Malinche. Basically a long hike with amazing views (in good weather) of Izta and Orizaba. Overnight at the resort. The trail head at La Malinche is also the home to our favorite taco stand in all of Mexico!
Day Three
Drive to Tlachichuca and an exiting four wheel drive trip to the Peidra Grande hut (14,200 ft) on the flanks of Orizaba. On the way we make a brief visit of the highest village (at around 11,400 ft) in North America. The afternoon is spent resting and acclimating. We may set up our own camp (the hut can be noisy) utilizing tents while using the hut for meals and socializing. (Dinner)
Day Four
Orizaba acclimating day with a hike to 15,500 ft. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day Five
We awake very early for our Orizaba summit attempt. The climb involves steep (42 deg) glacier travel with ice axe and crampons. At the top of North America's third highest peak we are rewarded with spectacular views of central Mexico. We then descend all the way back to the nearby town of Tlachchuca for a well-deserved dinner and rest. (Breakfast)
Day 6
Travel back to Mexico City airport for aftertnoon flights home.
