Live Aboard Diving In The Sea of Cortez

We'll stop at some of the best dive sites in the area that have earned the Sea of Cortez its world-famous reputation for diving excellence on this 8-day live-aboard trip.
Each day brings new surprises in what Cousteau called “the world's aquarium.” Dive into this giant "fish tank" and you'll share the Sea of Cortez with hundreds of fascinating marine species—including scads, grunts, sergeant majors, machetes, and Mexican barracudas. During some seasons you may find pods of pilot whales and dolphins, jumping mobulas, and with luck— perhaps even rarely seen orcas or sperm whales.

Live-aboard means flexibility, range and optimum diving time that day boats can’t match. Comfortable accommodations and superb meals await you aboard our 80’ Don Jose. It comfortably accommodates up to 16 passengers in seven above-deck cabins, each with a changing area, storage closet, adjacent shower and head, plus a sink in most. Air conditioning is available at night in each cabin. With a convenient swim step, storage lockers, DVD and VHS video system and a natural history library for your perusal, this vessel will make your adventure a true pleasure.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are freshly prepared by our onboard cooks. Each evening, you'll also enjoy our famous Don Jose-style happy hour as you witness some of the world's most memorable sunsets.
Day 1: Arrive in La Paz, Mexico
Arrive in La Paz and transfer to the Marina Don Jose to meet your dive master and check into the Don Jose. Spend the rest of the day exploring the colorful city of La Paz on your own before spending the night dockside on board the Don Jose.
Day 2-6: Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California)
For five full days our experienced crew will take you to some of the best dive sites in the Sea of Cortez. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, it ranks as the second most diverse marine body in the world. With up to 4 dives per day your guides will enhance your appreciation for this remarkable ecosystem. One-third of all the world’s whale and dolphin species either live or migrate here. The region also serves as a breeding ground for sea lions, marine turtles and some 500 fish species. In addition to El Bajo (where late in the season we might also find schooling hammerheads), we'll visit Salvatierra, Cerralvo and Los Islotes—where graceful sea lions may cross our watery path. We’ll visit Las Animas, with its myriad of gorgonian corals—and San Diego Reef, where schooling jacks can number in the thousands. The daily itinerary depends on the groups' experience, weather conditions, and other variables.
Day 7: Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) to La Paz
After a morning dive to savor the last moments of this incredible getaway, it's time to say goodbye. We return to La Paz, having lunch en route, and transfer you to your hotel.
Day 8: La Paz to your home city
Depart to your home city.

“I have been on quite a few diving liveaboards now, and as a vegetarian I have come to expect that the food I will be given will be either whatever everyone else is having minus the meat or something of an after-thought. As an example, on one very well known “luxury” liveaboard, I was promised something really special on the last celebration bbq night on-board, this was after being severely forgotten for the entire week…imagine my surprise then, when I got to the front of the queue and all they offered me was the side salad everyone else was getting, alongside their steaks and lobster, to say I was cross was an understatement. “When I was introduced to Beni the chef on board the Don Jose for our trip, I have to say my hopes weren’t raised… he raised his eyebrows and shrugged when I explained that I didn’t eat meat or fish (no meat, no fish, no chicken, but yes I do drink milk, I love cheese and I eat eggs). But what a surprise I got, the food started off really good and got better and better… Fab cooked Mexican breakfasts, soup and then a large salad with beans and soft tortillas for lunch and great evening meals with dessert. Everyday I had something different to eat, with the other diners looking on enviously at my meals – I’m sure their meals were great too, but mine were different and very tasty and all from his tiny galley. “So a massive thank you to Beni, the chef that is always smiling and loudly singing to whoever will listen (and does a bit of dancing too), you h
