Secluded Botswana Safari

Botswana offers an experience of Africa as it used to be. Far away from tourist crowds, we find the wonders that drew adventurers to the continent decades ago.
Botswana offers an experience of Africa as it used to be. Far away from tourist crowds, we find the wonders that drew adventurers to the continent decades ago. Vast herds of elephants still roam the acacia-studded savannah. Antelope, giraffes and buffalo thrive in the wetlands of the Okavango Delta and at watering holes that sustain life on the dry plains. Lions laze beneath mopane trees, an icon of a wildness vanishing too quickly in the contemporary world. Classic tented safari camps offer luxuries reminiscent of a nostalgic era in the African bush. It’s all still here, in secluded Botswana.

Days 1-2: Livingstone, Zambia & Victoria Falls
The River Club, replete with Edwardian ambience, overlooks the Zambezi River, where hippos may entertain us on the banks. We take a sunset cruise following a guided tour of Victoria Falls, the world’s most astounding cataract. The profuse spray has created a rainforest, with a walkway to explore.
Lodging The River Club
Description The River Club is one of Africa’s most coveted accommodations. Set along the shores of the Zambezi River, just over 10 miles from famous Victoria Falls, this Edwardian-style house with manicured lawns and 10 guest chalets offers a bridge between the Western world and the wonders of Africa.
Days 3-5: Chobe / Linyanti Private Tented Camp
By road and ferry we journey to Botswana’s Chobe National Park, known for its vast elephant herds – a population that exceeds 70,000. On our boat cruise down the Chobe River we sometimes see 500 elephants in a single day. Water birds abound, including herons and storks, as well as hippos and crocodiles. This afternoon we drive to the private reserve of Linyanti, dramatic big-game country. Its tree-dotted plains are home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and wild dogs as well as tremendous elephant herds. We encounter wildlife in amazing proximity on game drives, guided walks, canoe trips and boat excursions on the Linyanti River. In the evenings we relax at our private camp, well-appointed tented accommodations evocative of an earlier age. Through the thorny acacia branches we see more stars than we ever dreamed of, scattered across an impossibly black sky.
Lodging Linyanti Private Tented Camp
Description Set under magnificent knob thorn acacia trees, with a wonderful view over the Linyanti waterways, we will experience first class camping in a setting that provides a nostalgic reminiscence of the bygone era of Africa’s exploration. Our newly designed, spacious walk-in Pioneer tents allow you to feel more connected and open to nature, accentuating the feeling of the vast wilderness. Flowing linens, brass bucket showers and basins, bush laundry service and flush toilets are among the many luxury comforts and amenities provided. Both day and night game drives are available in open 4-wheel drive vehicles. Guided game and bird walks can be interspersed with canoe and boat excursions. One of the most unique attractions of the Linyanti is watching scores of elephants refresh themselves in the area's widespread waterways.
Days 6-7: Duma Tau Camp, Linyanti
This morning we drive to Duma Tau Camp. The previously dry Savuti Channel is once again a hippo-filled stream, surrounded by open grassland that’s home to all the big predators and plains animals, including sable and roan antelope. The waterway in front of the camp draws large numbers of game, especially in the dry winter months. Many lions frequent the area as well as elephants in great numbers. The private verandahs, nearly at eye-level, allow us to watch them from just feet away.
Lodging Duma Tau Camp
Description DumaTau (meaning 'roar of the lion') is a 10-room luxury tented camp located within the private 125,000 hectare Linyanti Wildlife Reserve which borders the western boundary of Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. The camp rests beneath a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon within the Linyanti waterway system. The source of the Savuti Channel is close to the camp, and game drives up the Savuti are a highlight of the area. The thatch-roofed tents are elevated from the ground and have canvas walls, allowing guests to enjoy the magical night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their beds. The bathroom facilities are en-suite, and each room has an additional outside shower. There is a dining room, pub, lounge, plunge pool and a guest toilet with a fantastic view.
Days 8-9: Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta
Fly to Jacana Camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Where the river meets the Kalahari Desert, a green oasis sprawls amid the sands and dry savannah. The maze of canals and lagoons sustains a profusion of wildlife, and we explore the constantly shifting marsh by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Islands and wetlands among the channels are home to many rare birds; we may observe wattled cranes, Pel’s fishing owls, jacanas, rails, crakes and moorhens. We may also see antelope and red lechwe browsing in the grasses.

Lodging Jacana Camp
Description Jacana Camp is situated in a private reserve in the northwestern part of the Okavango Delta and bordered on the east by the Moremi Game Reserve. Lying in the very heart of the delta, the reserve captures all the magic and mystique of the Okavango. Narrow water channels cut their way through the papyrus and reed beds in the permanent delta to the north and east of the reserve, providing the perfect environment for the elusive sitatunga and the rare Pels fishing owl. Lush palm islands dot the water and invite exploration, and Jacana Camp is built on one such thickly forested island. In the reserve’s central region vast, open flood plains provide stunning scenery.
Days 10-12: Tubu Tree Camp, Moremi Game Reserve
Travel by boat or safari vehicle to Tubu Tree Camp on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve. On game drives in open 4X4 vehicles we may encounter lions, leopards and cheetahs as well as a host of hoofed game. Night drives reveal nocturnal species such as civet cat and caracal, and large predators that hunt at night. Short safari walks (where safe) reveal the subtleties of the ecosystems that can only be experienced on foot.

Lodging Tubu Tree Camp
Description Tubu Tree Camp is located in one of the largest areas of permanently dry land in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana. The camp is surrounded by a diverse mix of habitats, from lush grasses to mopane forests and dry Kalahari sandveld, ensuring excellent game viewing with a broad mix of species. The camp’s five traditional canvas tents are built on raised wooden platforms to enhance the views over the scenic plains. In addition to an elegantly appointed bedroom, each tent has a private deck and en-suite bathroom facilities with an outdoor shower open to the African skies. Guests enjoy meals in the main dining area or outdoor pub under the shade of a large marula tree. The pool and lounge area provide inviting spaces for relaxing, after explorations beyond the camp.
Day 13: Maun / Home
Depart by air for Maun, where we connect with flights home.
