Expedition Botswana

A guided safari expedition to remote and private reserves in Botswana for the best game viewing! Can you imagine the sight and sound of a hundred elephants marching by your Land Rover at close range? In the wilds of Botswana, that’s not unheard of.
Can you imagine the sight and sound of a hundred elephants marching by your Land Rover at close range? In the wilds of Botswana, that’s not unheard of. In fact, Botswana offers a safari experience evocative of earlier days, when the African wilderness was uncrowded and synonymous with adventure. Our private expedition camps make that possible still, situated deep in the bush where a plethora of game resides, from rare sitatunga antelope to regal prides of lion. A commitment to small-scale eco-travel is sustaining vast animal populations in Botswana, and we can’t wait to share the wonders with you.
Day 1: Maun, Botswana / Okavango Delta
Arrive in Maun, meet our Expedition Leader and transfer by light aircraft to the watery reaches of the Moremi Game Reserve. At our private adventure camp, we find the ultimate experience of the Okavango Delta, where serene waters flow through a maze of channels around isolated islands, nurturing a profusion of plant and animal life. There is no better way to encounter the Okavango than by mokoro, the traditional poled canoe by which we reach our private island and secluded camp.
Lodging Linyanti & Okavango Delta
Description Our Natural Habitat Private Expedition Camp in Linyanti has 9 ft x 9 ft walk-in dome tents taking us back to the great days of African exploration. Pure cotton linen bedrolls (with duvets) on stretchers, bedside table with silver lantern and mini luggage benches complement the atmosphere in pristine, wild camping areas. Each tent has a private, organic compost toilet. Bathrooms are en suite and open-air - the old style tin bucket showers (hot water on request!) and basins with all amenities create simple serviced comfort.
Day 2: Southwestern Moremi Game Reserve
Surrounded by permanently flooded delta, our island base is nestled in riverine forest, home to the elusive sitatunga antelope and Pel’s fishing owl. On mokoro safaris we encounter a diversity of birdlife, frogs and game species, some of which are specially adapted to water, like the red lechwe. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lion or leopard around our island camp.
Days 3-5: Okavango Delta, Seba Camp
After breakfast we transfer by light aircraft to Seba Camp, set in a private concession bordering the vast Moremi Game Reserve and Okavango Delta. Seba Camp has been designed to blend into the ancient riverine forest of majestic hardwood trees such as sycamore fig and leadwood, against which it is built. Overlooking a perennial lagoon with prolific birdlife and resident pods of hippo, each of Seba’s tents has a private deck with magnificent vistas of the lagoon and the host of wildlife passing by. We expect to spot lion, territorial leopard, large herds of buffalo, and ever-present elephant, as well as general game including giraffe, zebra, red lechwe and impala.
Lodging Seba Camp
Description Seba Camp is set in an ancient riverine forest in the heart of Botswana's Okavango Delta. It is named for an elephant called Seba, whose historic historic release from nearby Abu Camp was a memorable event in the region. As a baby, Seba starred in the Walt Disney movie Whispers, which was filmed in the area. The word "seba" means whisper in the local language. Seba Camp offers secluded, luxurious accommodations overlooking a lagoon teeming with animal and bird life. The camp accommodates 16 guests in eight well-appointed and spacious elevated tents, carefully designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Each has its own en-suite bathroom and private deck on which to relax and observe the passing panoply of wildlife in and around the perennial lagoon. The dining and bar areas are also built on a raised teak deck and offer spectacular views. A swimming pool is a welcome feature for guests who wish to cool off during the hotter months.
Days 6 - 8: Linyanti Reserve
We transfer by light aircraft to Chobe airstrip and drive to our next camp in the private Linyanti Reserve. Along the way we are exposed to the rural way of life along the northernmost tip of Botswana, then more game comes into view as we approach the Linyanti. This region is noted for its shifting landscapes, from riverine to savannah, and forest to plains. The Linyanti’s perennial waters attract herds of wildlife that walk well-worn game paths to slake their thirst in the dry season. Predators follow in their footsteps, making for exciting game viewing.

Days 9 & 10: Chobe National Park / Victoria Falls
We drive today to Chobe National Park. At Kasane we embark on a shaded boat cruise down the Chobe River, with lunch aboard. The cruise offers a unique vantage point from which to observe the park’s famous herds of elephant, puku, numerous hippos, crocodiles and diverse birds. After clearing border formalities we continue by road into Zambia and Toka Leya Camp. Toka Leya, overlooking the mighty Zambezi River, lies within Mosi-oa- Tunya National Park near Victoria Falls. More than a mile wide, Victoria Falls is the most expansive curtain of water in the world, plummeting more than 300 feet into the Zambezi Gorge. The cataract’s local name, which the park shares, means “the Smoke that Thunders.” Activities include a tour of Victoria Falls, game drives in the national park, river cruises from camp and guided nature walks. We also enjoy good birding around the camp. There are several optional activities available at an additional charge; a few of the most popular options include helicopter flights over the falls or elephant-back safaris.
Lodging Toka Leya
Description Toka Leya Camp sits in a prime location overlooking the Zambezi River with the east side of the camp under the shade of the canopy trees and the west side in an open setting adjacent to an ancient baobab tree. Wildlife around the camp includes elephants and hippo, as well as many bird species. The camp consists of 12 en-suite safari tents that are connected by wooden walkways connecting to the main common area. The tent décor utilizes earthy hues that harmonize with the environs, and all have private wooden decks with stunning views over the river. The camp’s shared center incorporates a lounge, bar and dining area complete with a pizza oven. A large pool with a sun deck overlooks the Zambezi.
Day 11: Livingstone / Home
Our adventure comes to a close as we transfer by road to Livingstone Airport for flights home.

“From mokoros to all the Land Rover rides between, we had an indescribable adventure in movement alone! Add to that the wonderful accommodations, the delicious food and then top it all off with the thrill of spotting lion (at night in the Kalahari!), giraffe, elephant, impala, exotic birds, hippos, etc., etc., etc. Even though I can’t quite express adequately my feelings, rest assured that the stars, the animals, the silence, the animal noises, the dark, the songs of greeting as we pulled into camp will stay with me the rest of my life.”

“We have been to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Each of our other trips was excellent, but in this trip the service we received, the attitude of the guides and the attention to detail exceeded anything we ever experienced before in Africa. Everything was excellent.”

“Clinton Edwards is the best tracker and group leader I’ve ever had. There is no substitute for being raised in the bush – you can learn that stuff elsewhere but not like that.”
