Family Botswana Safari

For families, there’s no topping the adventure of an African wildlife safari, and in Africa, it’s hard to top Botswana. Big game is abundant here, and we get amazingly close from our private tented camps, situated deep within the bush and far from tourist crowds.
For families, there’s no topping the adventure of an African wildlife safari, and in Africa, it’s hard to top Botswana. Big game is abundant here, and we get amazingly close from our private tented camps, situated deep within the bush and far from tourist crowds. In a world of rapidly vanishing natural treasures, the chance for a family to experience the wonders of Africa together is an unsurpassed gift. Watch a cheetah sprint across the savannah, or study the green glow of a hyena’s eyes at night, and wildlife takes on a whole new meaning.

An essential element of this safari is our use of a combination of two specialized vehicles during different parts of the trip, allowing for the unmatched game viewing opportunities promised by Natural Habitat Adventures. At times, we will travel in semi-open-sided 4 x 4 Stretch Land Cruisers or Land Rovers, allowing for enhanced game viewing and a comfortable and safe ride over the sometimes uneven terrain of Botswana's desert and delta environs. Roof hatches add to the open safari experience, while additional comfort is ensured with secured drop-down plastic flaps used during longer transfers to provide respite from dust or rain. We will also use open 4 x 4 Land Rovers or Land Cruisers, with a unique suspension system and an open-top, open-sided, tiered seating arrangement, specially-designed to maximize game viewing opportunities and comfort.

Both kinds of vehicles have 10 cushioned passenger seats, one in front next to the driver, followed by three rows of three seats each, though we limit our capacity to just eight travelers, again for maximum comfort and viewing. Both offer a mini-fridge stocked with cold drinks and a small library with reference books and field guides. Each custom-built vehicle sports front bull bars and runner boards, as well as a full recovery kit, including spare tires and a high lift jack. Vehicles are updated or replaced regularly and meticulously maintained to provide our guests with an unmatched safari.

We have designed this trip for those guests whose African dreams include the most remote wildlife experience available and don’t mind more simple accommodations to accomplish that goal. An added benefit is that the rate is great. We have combined luxury permanent tented camps (all amenities en suite) with our special Adventurer Camps (private en suite drop toilets only) to provide comfort while enhancing the total safari experience. On these trips changes to the itinerary may occur in order to take advantage of conditions unique to the season. Depending upon availability, itineraries may run in a different order.
Days 1-2: Livingstone, Zambia & Victoria Falls
Arrive in Livingstone, meet our Expedition Leader and transfer to Toka Leya Camp. Toka Leya, overlooking the mighty Zambezi River, lies within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park near Victoria Falls. More than a mile wide, Victoria Falls is the most expansive curtain of water in the world, plummeting more than 300 feet into the Zambezi Gorge. The cataract’s local name, which the park shares, means “the Smoke that Thunders.” Activities include a tour of Victoria Falls, game drives in the national park, river cruises from camp and guided nature walks. We also enjoy good birding around the camp. There are several optional activities available at an additional charge, but a few of the most popular options include helicopter flights over the falls or elephant-back safaris.
Lodging Toka Leya
Description Toka Leya Camp sits in a prime location overlooking the Zambezi River with the east side of the camp under the shade of the canopy trees and the west side in an open setting adjacent to an ancient baobab tree. Wildlife around the camp includes elephants and hippo, as well as many bird species. The camp consists of 12 en-suite safari tents that are connected by wooden walkways connecting to the main common area. The tent décor utilizes earthy hues that harmonize with the environs, and all have private wooden decks with stunning views over the river. The camp’s shared center incorporates a lounge, bar and dining area complete with a pizza oven. A large pool with a sun deck overlooks the Zambezi.
Days 3-5: Chobe / Linyanti Reserve
By road and ferry we journey to Botswana’s Chobe National Park, known for its vast elephant herds – a population that exceeds 70,000. On our boat cruise down the Chobe River we sometimes see 500 elephants in a single day. Water birds abound, including herons and storks, as well as hippos and crocodiles. This afternoon we drive to the private reserve of Linyanti, dramatic big-game country. This region is noted for its shifting landscapes, from riverine to savannah, and forest to plains. The Linyanti’s perennial waters attract herds of wildlife that walk well-worn game paths to slake their thirst in the dry season. Predators follow in their footsteps, making for exciting game viewing.
Lodging Natural Habitat Private Expedition Camp
Description Our Natural Habitat Private Expedition Camp in Linyanti has 9 ft x 9 ft walk-in dome tents taking us back to the great days of African exploration. Pure cotton linen bedrolls (with duvets) on stretchers, bedside table with silver lantern and mini luggage benches complement the atmosphere in pristine, wild camping areas. Each tent has a private, organic compost toilet. Bathrooms are en suite and open-air - the old style tin bucket showers (hot water on request!) and basins with all amenities create simple serviced comfort.
Days 6 -8: Okavango Delta
After breakfast we transfer by light aircraft to Seba Camp, set in a private concession bordering the vast Moremi Game Reserve and Okavango Delta. Seba Camp has been designed to blend into the ancient riverine forest of majestic hardwood trees such as sycamore fig and leadwood, against which it is built. Overlooking a perennial lagoon with prolific birdlife and resident pods of hippo, each of Seba’s tents has a private deck with magnificent vistas of the lagoon and the host of wildlife passing by. We expect to spot lion, territorial leopard, large herds of buffalo, and ever-present elephant, as well as general game including giraffe, zebra, red lechwe and impala.
Lodging Seba Camp
Description Seba Camp is set in an ancient riverine forest in the heart of Botswana's Okavango Delta. It is named for an elephant called Seba, whose historic historic release from nearby Abu Camp was a memorable event in the region. As a baby, Seba starred in the Walt Disney movie Whispers, which was filmed in the area. The word "seba" means whisper in the local language. Seba Camp offers secluded, luxurious accommodations overlooking a lagoon teeming with animal and bird life. The camp accommodates 16 guests in eight well-appointed and spacious elevated tents, carefully designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Each has its own en-suite bathroom and private deck on which to relax and observe the passing panoply of wildlife in and around the perennial lagoon. The dining and bar areas are also built on a raised teak deck and offer spectacular views. A swimming pool is a welcome feature for guests who wish to cool off during the hotter months.
Days 9 & 10: Southwestern Moremi Game Reserve
At our private adventure camp, we find the ultimate experience of the Okavango Delta, where serene waters flow through a maze of channels around isolated islands, nurturing a profusion of plant and animal life. There is no better way to encounter the Okavango than by mokoro, the traditional poled canoe by which we reach our private island and secluded camp. Surrounded by permanently flooded delta, our island base is nestled in riverine forest, home to the elusive sitatunga antelope and Pel’s fishing owl. On mokoro safaris we encounter a diversity of birdlife, frogs and game species, some of which are specially adapted to water, like the red lechwe. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lion or leopard around our island camp.
