This is the ultimate southern African safari. A small group of just eight travelers will spend a fortnight crossing a vast tract of Africa’s prime wildlife regions on a journey that evokes the classic safaris of old. Though we stay in out-of-the-way locales where we see far more big game than people, our deluxe tented camps are the apex of comfort and atmosphere in the bush. There is no Africa itinerary that offers more diversity than this; from the Namib Desert to the waterways of the Okavango Delta, teeming with life, we experience Africa at its most primal and magnetic.

Day 1: Windhoek, Namibia
Upon arrival, transfer to Olive Grove poised above Namibia’s former colonial capital, which retains its German character. Tonight we meet for an informal welcome dinner.
Lodging Olive Grove
Description This small guesthouse is situated close to city center of Windhoek yet enjoys a quiet, peaceful location for a good night’s sleep. With just 12 rooms, this quaint accommodation offers relaxing, intimate environs. Common areas include a central open-air lounge with fireplace, as well as a spa bath, plunge pool and beautiful gardens. Each room has its own veranda with tables and chairs, for guests who wish to dine in their rooms. The kitchen serves a full breakfast, all day long, and a sit-down dinner. A wellness room offers a range of professional services for to aide guests in relaxing after a long arrival flight or as an ideal conclusion to a perfect safari.
Days 2-3: Sossusvlei Sand Dunes
Fly to Kulala Wilderness Reserve, amid massive gold-orange dunes that rise a thousand feet from the floor of the oldest desert in the world. Amid this arid clime we may find springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, bat-eared fox and aardwolf. Discover the desert’s quiet magic on short walks and game drives, returning to the comfort of our camp for matchless sunsets and stargazing.
Lodging Kulala Desert Lodge
Description Nestled at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes, Kulala Desert Lodge provides guests with their own private entrance into Namib Naukluft Park, the perfect destination for those looking for a truly wild and remote desert experience. Guests are accommodated in 19 thatched and canvas "kulalas" (meaning "to sleep" in Oshiwambo) with en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to take advantage of the cooling desert breezes. The flat rooftop of each kulala supports a deck where bedrolls are placed for guests who wish to sleep under the unbelievably starry Namibian skies. The main lodge, with its northern Africa-inspired décor, includes a comfortable lounge, fully stocked bar, dining area, plunge pool and wrap-around veranda that overlooks the camp’s waterhole. The waterhole attracts a plethora of wildlife including gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and jackal, and provides the perfect vantage point from which to view and photograph the arresting desert scenery.
Days 4-5: Damaraland / Skeleton Coast
Follow the Skeleton Coast by air where we may see the remains of shipwrecks on the beach, to the port city of Swakopmund for a brief stop. Inland, we come to Damaraland, where stark desert is cooled by early-morning mists from the coast. We explore the austere and rocky terrain on foot and by four-wheel-drive vehicles, tracking the uniquely desert-adapted elephants and watching for ostrich.
Lodging Damaraland Camp
Description Situated on the northern bank of the Huab River Valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains and the region’s endless rock vistas, stark plains, ancient valleys and soaring peaks, Damaraland Camp provides an experience of wild Africa like no other. Early morning mists, generated by the clash between the cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm desert air of the Skeleton Coast, drift inland along the sand river canyon, providing moisture to sustain the flora and fauna of the area. Damaraland Camp accommodates guests in 10 comfortable tented rooms, each with en-suite facilities including flush toilets and showers with hot and cold running water. The stone living area combines the dining room and pub, and an open fire crackles on calm evenings. A refreshing pool is located next to the bar area.
Days 6 & 7: Etosha National Park
Drive to Etosha National Park, an ancient lakebed where perennial springs draw a plethora of game. Our lodge is set on an extensive private reserve with access to Namibia’s best wildlife viewing. We’ll take day and night drives and walks, and we’ll watch animals up close from hides. A myriad of species reside here, including black and white rhino, elephant, lion, cheetah, gemsbok, springbok and hartebeest.
Lodging Ongava Lodge
Description Ongava Lodge is situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve. The lodge offers luxury accommodations in 14 en-suite units made of rock and thatch. The main lounge, bar and dining areas offer impressive views, as they are situated close to the top of a hill, surveying the foothills of the unpronounceable Ondundozonanandana Range. An inviting pool beckons guests to cool off in the heat of the day. Meals are either served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp's waterhole, or on the dining deck under the stars. Ongava Lodge was listed on the Condé Nast Traveler's Gold Reserve List for 2005.
Days 8-9: Okavango Delta, Botswana
Leaving the dry Namib Desert, we fly to another realm entirely: the Okavango Delta, where the river pours over the sands of the Kalahari in a green maze of canals and lagoons, sustaining a profusion of wildlife. We stay in solitude at Xigera Camp in the Moremi Game Reserve. There is water here year-round, and we glide silently in a mokoro – a traditional dugout canoe – spying a host of animals and birds on the banks.
Lodging Xigera Camp
Description Xigera (pronounced Kee-jera) is a luxury tented camp in the Moremi Game Reserve, secluded in one of the most beautiful corners of the Okavango Delta. Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera features 10 finely furnished tented rooms with en-suite facilities and an outdoor shower. Each room is raised off the ground on a wooden deck, offering a superb view of the seasonal floodplain and waterhole. Guests enjoy meals and evening drinks under thatch in the raised lounge, pub and dining area, which overlook a permanently flowing channel. A traditional boma, or outdoor dining area, offers a special experience of fine cuisine and conversation under the African stars. Wooden walkways wind through the forest, connecting guestrooms to the main living area.
Days 10-11: Southeastern Okavango Delta
Today we depart by light aircraft and journey to our deluxe bush camp bordering the acclaimed Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Our camp is a private oasis of luxury, with all the classic scenery one expects on an African safari -- open floodplains, marshlands, acacia and mopane woodlands, riverine areas, and grasslands stretching to the horizon. The wildlife in this renowned corner of the Okavango is as diverse as it is prolific, from elephant and impala to lion and wild dog.
Lodging Chitabe Camp
Description Chitabe is a beautiful 16-bedded tented camp on an island in the Okavango Delta, set within an enormous private reserve bordered on three sides by the Moremi Game Reserve. The reserve offers a superb variety of habitats, which include waterways and marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas, open grasslands and seasonally flooded plains. A variety of wildlife is on view: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and all the plains game, including zebra, impala and red lechwe. Wild dogs are also known to frequent the area.
Days 12-14: Linyanti Concession
A game drive takes us into Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, one of the best game-viewing regions in Botswana. Elephants thrive in the mopane woodlands, especially in winter when they number in the thousands. We stay at either Duma Tau or Savuti Camp. Day and night drives may reveal all the large predators as well as impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest lechwe, tsessebe and other plains animals.
Lodging Savuti Camp
Description Savuti Camp is situated in the southern part of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in northern Botswana. The camp is built on the banks of the Savuti Channel, the Okavango Delta’s most famous waterway and the heart of a legendary wildlife region best known for its large number of predators. Accommodating 14 guests in seven large walk-in tents, Savuti Camp is a small and intimate enclave in an isolated area, far from any crowds. Each tent has its own bathroom with a shower, hand basin and flush toilet. There is a separate dining room and pub under reed and thatch, as well as a plunge pool.
Day 15: The River Club, Zambia
Fly to Chobe National Park for more of Botswana’s magnificent big game. Famous for its vast herds of elephants, the park is also home to feline predators and plenty of hoofed beasts. We enjoy lunch aboard a game-viewing boat cruise down the Zambezi River before entering Zambia, en route to the River Club. At this elegant Edwardian-flavored lodge facing the sunset, elephants and hippos often frequent the riverbank.
Lodging The River Club
Description The River Club is one of Africa’s most coveted accommodations. Set along the shores of the Zambezi River, just over 10 miles from famous Victoria Falls, this Edwardian-style house with manicured lawns and 10 guest chalets offers a bridge between the Western world and the wonders of Africa. Each chalet is elevated above the riverbank and is comprised of a comfortable bedroom and sitting area and an en-suite bathroom with clawfoot tub. One side of each chalet is completely open to the river, allowing uninterrupted views of the flowing Zambezi and the hippos and crocodiles that inhabit it. The main area of the lodge maintains a comfortably homey feel, with an inviting lounge, dining room, library and wide veranda. Most meals are served in the shade of the trees and within view of the River Club’s lush gardens, though indoor dining is also an option. A croquet court, pool, deck with hammocks and lounge chairs, and a wellness center welcome guests to relax after a long flight or a day spent exploring the environs around Livingstone.
Day 16: Victoria Falls / Home
Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and arguably the most stupendous waterfall on the planet. Our epic exploration comes to a fitting end with a guided tour to the falls. This afternoon, we transfer to the Livingstone airport for our departure flights.
