Madagascar is a world apart. Its forests are home to indri indri, diademed sifakas, aye-ayes, tenrecs, fossa, didiera and pachypodia. For even the best-traveled naturelover, Madagascar offers a kaleidoscope of discoveries. In fact, many of its rare and intriguing plants and animals, upwards of 80%, exist nowhere else on earth, making Madagascar a living time capsule. Once part of a supercontinent, Madagascar broke away from that landmass 100 million years ago and has since existed largely in biological isolation. Come with us to discover a continent you never knew existed.

Madagascar’s varied ecosystems offer a range of natural encounters. We will walk in the rainforests (which can be hot and humid), take wildlife viewing boat rides and may even have the chance to snorkel (for those who desire). Participation in all physical activities is not mandatory. We ask our guests to understand that the accommodations in Madagascar are not, collectively, of the standard that may be found in other, more established safari countries. Some lodgings are relatively luxurious while others are plain but clean and comfortable. In all cases, we have selected the best accommodation available at each location. On these trips changes to the itinerary may occur in order to take advantage of conditions unique to the season and/or accommodate unexpected internal flight schedule changes; therefore, itineraries need to be rerouted or redesigned without notice.
Day 1: Johannesburg, South Africa
Arrive in Johannesburg and gather for a welcome dinner.
Day 2-3: Antananarivo / Pèrinet, Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Fly to Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital, and drive to Pèrinet Reserve in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Madagascar has more than 15 species of lemur, and the world’s largest is found here, the indri indri, whose arresting call sounds like loud, eerie wailing. We may also spy diademed sifakas or the palm-sized brown mouse lemurs. We stay at Vakona Forest Lodge and spend two days exploring the park, a critical component of Madagascar’s efforts to conserve its biodiversity. This threatened biome contains a thousand different orchid species, a plethora of medicinal plants, and a neon spectrum of chameleons. One evening we take a night walk to spot nocturnal creatures.

We will also plan to visit Lemur Island, a small island sanctuary near Vakona Lodge which has allowed orphaned lemurs to thrive. There are regularly several species of lemur, which have become quite habituated to visitors allowing for amazing close-up encounters and great photo opportunities.
Lodging Vakona Forest Lodge
Description Vakona Forest Lodge is a comfortable hideaway, featuring 'forest cabins', tucked into a mixed forest adjoining Andasibe and Mantadia NP. The cabins are basic but comfortable, with en-suite bathrooms and mosquito-netted beds. The main dining area is stunningly set over a man-made lake where carp and kingfishers are often seen. The lodge also boasts an outdoor swimming pool and immaculate gardens, where a host of Malagasy birds can be seen. There is also a small curio shop and coffee bar in the main area.
Days 4-5: Tamatave / Ivoloina Zoological Park
Embark on an early-morning walk in Anamalazotra reserve in search for the dynamic indri, whose distinctive call guides our tracking. Later this afternoon, drive to Madagascar’s main port city, Tamatave. Here, we visit Ivoloina Zoological Park and Save the Lemur Foundation, which runs a successful captive breeding program for endangered lemur species. The enthusiastic staff explains how conservation and community development go hand in hand.
Lodging Hotel Sharon
Description Hotel Sharon is a simple, but comfortable property set a few blocks from the beach, in Madagascar's second-largest city, Tamatave. The hotel is three stories high, and some rooms offer views of the a bustling main road, always vibrant with pedestrians and rickshaws. The building opens onto a central plaza with a large swimming pool, lined with tables and lounge chairs - the perfect place to relax with a cool drink. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable, with both air-conditioning and heat.
Day 6: Maroantsetra / Masoala National Park
Fly to Maroantsetra and Masoala National Park, the best-protected tract of virgin rainforest in Madagascar. Within this slick green realm of coiled leaves and unfurled vines we find geckos, frogs and stick-like chameleons masquerading as branches. Our retreat for the next three nights, Relais du Masoala, is the recipient of a Smithsonian ecotourism award.
Lodging Relais de Masoala
Description Set in five hectares of manicured gardens, Relais de Masoala is a charming lodge. Its 12 cabins are set well apart from one another, and are beautifully appointed with wrap-around balconies and shuttered windows, allowing ocean breezes in. Each cabin has two double beds with mosquito nets. The main area consists of a bar, restaurant and expansive deck with large, cushioned chairs and couches. The boat station, from which we catch our ride to and from Maroantsetra, is just a ten minute walk away. Relais de Masoala is set on a small channel, just a short walk from the beautiful white-sand beach.
Days 7-8: Masoala / Nosy Mangabe
As we explore the park’s varied habitats, we look for rare species of lemurs on day and night walks. Glimpses are usually fleeting, but we may spy the extremely endangered black-and-white ruffed lemurs or the notoriously shy aye-aye. On the island of Nosy Mangabe, rising 1,000 feet out of the sea, we’ll walk among many exceedingly rare plants and animals, likely seeing leaf-tailed geckos.
Day 9: Masoala / Antananarivo
After a leisurely morning, we fly back to Antananarivo and Palissandre Hotel & Spa, situated on a hillside in the heart of Antananarivo. Enjoy an afternoon exploring this exotic capital city.
Lodging Hotel Palissandre
Description Le Palissandre is one of Antananarivo's finest hotels. Set high on a hill in the central part of the city, it affords guests lovely and expansive views over the city below. Each of its beautifully-appointed rooms has a small balconies, air-conditioning, a mini-bar, and a safe. Its full-service spa and outdoor pool offer respite after a long day of travel. The restaurant serves Malagasy foods and offers outdoor seating on a large deck overlooking the city.
Day 10: Ifaty
This morning we visit a handicrafts market before our flight to Tulear. Southern Madagascar is a profound contrast to the lush northeast, an arid zone of odd spiny forests and rocky canyons. Otherworldly trees pepper the landscape, including massive baobabs, spindly didiera and the swollen-footed, bottleshaped pachypodia. In Ifaty we stay at Le Paradisier, a collection of thatched bungalows tucked along a beach on the Mozambique Channel.
Lodging Paradisier Lodge
Description A stay at Le Paradisier is a true highlight of our Madagascar adventure. Guests accommodations here are beautiful, double-story beach cabanas with thatched roofs. A sitting room, open shower, and bathroom are situated downstairs. A double bed and small writing desk are set upstairs, with windows lining three sides of the walls. Cool breezes from the Mozambique channel drift through these lofty bedrooms, and the views of the beach and the ocean are unobstructed. The main dining area features a lovely infinity pool and is perched above the ocean allowing for fantastic views.
Days 11-12: Reniala / Isalo National Park
Rise for a daybreak hike through the spiny desert of Reniala Reserve, one of the world’s most endangered biomes. Many resident species are found nowhere else on earth, including incredibly rare birds and octopus trees. Later, look for ring-tailed lemurs among the cacti in Isalo National Park. And cool off in the secret swimming holes set deep in ancient canyons.
Lodging Relais de la Reine
Description Constructed by local craftsmen using the beautiful sandstone found in this part of Madagascar, Relais de La Reine blends seamlessly into the surrounding environment. The guest rooms are comfortable, and their thick stone walls tend to keep them cool, even in this unforgiving environment. Well-tended gardens and lawns, set against a backdrop of red sandstone cliffs, complete the natural beauty of the property. A wonderfully inviting outdoor pool and full-service spa beckon after a long day of exploration. The dining room, bar, reception, and lounge all have high, peaked ceilings and large windows. Several outdoor patios allow guests the option of outdoor dining.
Day 13: Zombitse & Vohibasia National Parks / Antananarivo
Return to Tulear and visit Zombitse and Vohibasia national parks, offering some of Madagascar’s finest birdwatching. In the dry forest we look for the rare Appert’s greenbul, iridescent souimanga sunbird and, always, lemurs. Fly back to Antananarivo for a farewell dinner at the Malagasy cuisine of Villa Vanille.
Lodging Hotel Palissandre
Description Le Palissandre is one of Antananarivo's finest hotels. Set high on a hill in the central part of the city, it affords guests lovely and expansive views over the city below.
