Family Costa Rica Adventure

Costa Rica’s mountains, beaches, waterfalls and tropical rainforests offer families an unmatched natural destination for adventure. Wedged between two oceans and two continents, Costa Rica is home to some of the greatest biodiversity on earth: gigantic ferns, orchids, neonbilled toucans, three-toed sloths, monkeys, peccaries, crocodiles, iguanas and frogs, for starters. We encounter it from a variety of exciting approaches: rafting a lazy river, riding horseback through the jungle, flying through the forest on a zip-line and watching a volcano erupt. Nature has never been so impressive, and your family has never had so much fun.

Costa Rica is not just one of the world’s greatest natural treasures but also a family adventure paradise. This trip features what we believe are the most exciting and fascinating activities for families within this ecologically diverse country. Our Expedition Leader and driver will accompany our small groups to these remote areas, revealing the splendors of the rainforests and cloud forests. While this trip is available on a customized basis, pricing only applies to scheduled trips listed. Pricing for custom trips will be determined based on group size and dates, and increases should be expected during non-summer months. Please note that there is a minimum age limit of 8 years for the zip line, and a minimum age limit of 9 years for the rafting in Sarapiquí.

*Child (11 & under in a double): $2,695
**Child (11 & under in a triple/quad with 2 adults): $2,495
Day 1: San Jose, Costa Rica
Arrive in San José and transfer to our hotel. We meet our Expedition Leader at an orientation dinner this evening.
Lodging Hotel Bougainvillea
Description Set within 10 acres of lush gardens, rich with over 50 species of bromeliads, native trees, several orchid species, herb and cacti gardens and frog ponds, the Bougainvillea draws a colorful array of birdlife. This charming boutique hotel offers modern, spacious, well-appointed rooms, each with a view of the gardens. Additional amenities include a lovely restaurant, swimming pool, fitness center & tennis courts, as well as an on-site Activities Coordinator.
Day 2: Poas Volcano / Sarapiquí
This morning we travel to Poás Volcano National Park, where we see smoke rise from vents in the earth, near a bubbling blue-green sulfur lake. Water is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, building pockets of steam that rocket forth under pressure into explosive geysers. Later, we learn about bats at Tirimbina Rainforest Center. On a night walk into the forest we find the mist nets that scientists have erected to trap bats.
Day 3: Sarapiquí
The protected rainforest around Sarapiquí is an outstanding ecotourism destination. We learn about global efforts to conserve rainforests on a guided walk through La Selva, an international biological research station. During our short hike we may see monkeys, sloths, peccaries, iguanas and up to 400 different kinds of birds! This afternoon we experience the thrill of a jungle rafting excursion or horseback ride at Hacienda Pozo Azul, a working ranch that offers some of the best nature adventures in Costa Rica.
Lodging La Quinta
Description La Quinta is a charming eco-lodge with easy access to Braulio Carrillo National Park, the Sarapiquí River and La Selva Biological Station. Owned and operated by a Costa Rican family who is dedicated to conservation and education, the facility sits within a private rainforest reserve and boasts an on-site reforestation program, tropical gardens, frog ponds, butterfly gardens, walking trails and a swimming pool. Bungalows offer air conditioning, ceiling fans and shaded thatched-roof porches, as well as private bathroom facilities.
Day 4: Sarapiquí / Arenal
During the Chocolate Tour at Tirimbina Rainforest Center, we learn how the cacao bean is transformed into the locally made organic chocolates we have a chance to sample. Later, we drive to the Arenal area, stopping en route for lunch. This afternoon, we absorb the sensory stimuli of the jungle on a float trip down the Río Peñas Blancas. From our raft, we watch and listen for monkeys, parrots, toucans, sloths, iguanas, frogs, crocodiles, turtles and “Jesus Christ lizards” (they walk on water!) along the riverbanks. Overhead, the forest canopy is alive with the squawks and songs of an array of birds. We overnight across from the volcano at Arenal Observatory Lodge.
Lodging Arenal Observatory Lodge
Description Arenal Observatory Lodge is located across a deep river valley from one of the world’s most active volcanoes, about one mile from the crater. This location was carefully chosen by scientists from the Smithsonian Institute, who needed a close but safe vantage point from which to study the volcano. The lodge has thirty spacious rooms, most offering spectacular volcano views through huge windows. It sits on 870 acres of land adjacent to the Arenal Volcano National Park, which contains 270 acres of primary rainforest with wellmarked trails, 400 acres of reforestation projects, and 200 acres of working farm lands.
Day 5: Arenal
This morning, we explore the treetops on a canopy tour. A tram ride takes us 125 feet above the forest floor, moving slowly to experience the diverse life of the rainforest at varying levels. To descend, there are two choices: the Sky Trek canopy zip-line tour, zinging down a series of cables running between the mountains, or a more sedate return via the tram. (Minimum age for zip-line is eight years.) We finish the day with a soak in the hot springs, where a waterfall offers a natural massage.

Day 6: Arenal / San Jose
This morning, return to San José, where you will spend your final evening at Xandari Plantation Hotel. Those with beach extensions will travel on by road from Arenal to Costa Rica’s North-Pacific Riviera.
Lodging Xandari Plantation
Description Xandari Plantation consists of 16 spacious villas on a 40-acre coffee and fruit plantation overlooking Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Its architects envisioned a paradise reflecting the natural beauty of Costa Rica, and achieved it in strides. The villas, private terraces, furniture and gardens are designed with great attention to detail, and each villa is adorned with original works of art. Each has a private terrace, a walled in sun area, a bar, kitchen, and either a king bed or two full beds. The property has over two miles of scenic trails winding through coffee and fruit orchards into a lush tropical setting with a year-round river and five beautiful waterfalls. Fruits, vegetables and herbs from the plantation’s gardens complement Xandari’s health-conscious specialty dishes.
Day 7: San Jose / Home
Today we return home or continue on with our Tortuguero Extension.
