Brazil: Pantanal, Iguazu & Beyond

Brazil bursts with life, and we encounter it in all its exuberance on this unique nature odyssey. National Geographic called Brazil’s Pantanal the “Wild Wet,” an apt moniker for this watery green system of flooded marshes that sprawls over 90,000 square miles in the heart of South America.
Though the Amazon is better known, this region is home to the planet’s densest concentration of wildlife, including 10 million caimans, nearly 700 bird species and the endangered jaguar. Brazil also boasts the world’s largest cataract, mile-wide Iguaçu Falls. Brazil is bold and beautiful, and never more so than in its natural state.

On this adventure we explore Brazil’s vast Pantanal region, and visit Iguaçu Falls, one of the world’s most stunning cataracts. The Pantanal is home to diverse wildlife, which we will seek out using a variety of transportation options. We will use 4x4 vehicles for our best opportunity to observe wildlife, and traverse lakes within the refuge by canoe. We may also explore by horseback and on foot. Late November through early May are the wettest months, growing progressively drier through April and May when tropical hardwoods begin to bloom.
Day 1: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Arrive in Rio de Janeiro and transfer to the Ipanema Plaza Hotel on the beach. Gather for a welcome dinner this evening.
Lodging Golden Tulip Ipanema Plaza
Description Rio's luxury boutique hotel, the Golden Tulip Ipanema Plaza, is situated in the best spot of the elegant Ipanema neighborhood, just steps from the beach and minutes from Copacabana. The hotel offers a pool with views of the surrounding mountains for our guests to relax as they prepare for their Brazil adventure.
Day 2: Golden Lion Tamarin Project
At the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Project outside Rio we learn about the successful rehabilitation of wild populations of these delicate tiny primates returning from the brink of extinction. Found only in the lowland Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, these exquisite creatures were nearly extinct a generation ago.

Days 3 & 4: Iguazu Falls
Iguazu Falls, straddling the Brazil/Argentina border, is one of the mightiest waterfalls on the planet. On the Brazilian side, we walk along the canyon rim above the Iguaçu River, where we observe hundreds of small waterfalls that compose the milelong cataract. A full view of Devil’s Throat reveals the most dramatic section of the falls. Crossing Tancredo Neves Bridge, we explore the national park on the Argentine side, laced with trails leading to ever-varying views of the river’s cataclysmic plunge over the cliffs. We also visit a bird sanctuary where many tropical species from Brazil and elsewhere in South America, endangered by habitat loss, are protected. Overnight at the Hotel das Cataratas in full view of the falls.
Lodging Hotel Tropical Cataratas
Description Hotel Tropical Cataratas is a magnificent Portuguese colonial-style property just a few hundred yards from Iguazú Falls – the only accommodation located within the Iguazú national Park. The hotel boasts delicate orchid-filled gardens kept lush due to the spray from the nearby falls. Several pools as well as a spa and restaurants and a bar enhance the luxury experience.
Day 5: Campo Grande/Pantanal
Fly to Campo Grande and transfer by road to Caiman Ecological Refuge, deep in the green other-world of the Pantanal. Declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, this vast area of wet marshlands and dry islands is South America’s primary wildlife sanctuary. The name of the region derives from the Portuguese word “pântano,” meaning “swamp.” With rhythmic regularity, this vast depression in the center of South America floods with the annual rains, submerging most of its environs. As the waters recede during the dry season, they leave a mosaic of pools and marshes where a plethora of life flourishes in intense concentration. Some 3,500 different plants thrive here as well as nearly 700 bird species, 100 kinds of mammals, 80 reptile species and 260 different kinds of fish.
Lodging Caiman Ecological Refuge
Description One of the most impressive eco-lodges in the world, Caiman Ecological Refuge is part of a unique private research, conservation and ecotourism initiative. Located deep within the Pantanal and set inside an enormous reserve, the pousada offers the finest accommodations, a slate of ecological activities, and by far the best wildlife viewing in the area all resulting in the very best and most exclusive experience in all the Pantanal.
Days 6-8: Pantanal
From our base at the refuge we spend three full days exploring the Pantanal’s verdant recesses. Waking at sunrise is a magical experience as we listen to the chorus of birdsongs and monkey calls announcing a new day. Depending on seasonal conditions, we may take nature walks, horseback rides, canoe trips and ecological safaris. Our local guides are resident experts in the flora and fauna of the region, unveiling its myriad of wonders to us as we are immersed in our environs. We may be fortunate to see some of the Pantanal’s threatened species, which include the jaguar, panther, maned wolf, giant otter, giant armadillo, capybara and Brazilian tapir. Their habitat is under duress due to the expansion of ranching, mining and land-clearing, yet it is reassuring to know our presence contributes to the economic value of conserving this incomparable ecosystem.
Day 9: Campo Grande/Home
Transfer to the airport in Campo Grande for flights home.

“I cannot praise Zapa highly enough…he proved to be an excellent naturalist with an uncanny ability to spot birds and mammals and an apparently encyclopedic knowledge of both. He was energetic and enthusiastic and he made the trip all that we hoped it would be.”

“Unbelievable food preparation and presentation, especially at the Caiman Ecological Refuge lodge. All accommodations were terrific… wonderful accommodations, especially at the Tropical Cataratas in Foz de Iguazu. And of course Zapa is absolutely a gem. Indispensable. His knowledge and professionalism were top notch. He was always affable, courteous, helpful, and ALWAYS put our needs and attention before his. I feel that he made the trip much, much more memorable and enjoyable. His ability to function as a guide went beyond any of my expectations. Do not lose him!!! This was one of the best overall and most memorable trips in my life!”
