- Day 5: Dali/Xizhou
- This morning fly to Dali. Nestled between
the rhododendron-draped foothills of the
Zhonghe Si mountains and Lake Erhai,
Dali is a beautiful town at the crossroads
of the Silk Road. This area is blessed
with a temperate climate, dense forests
and fertile cropland that yields abundant
grain and vegetables. Its intimate size,
cobbled streets and old stone architecture make Dali one of China’s most alluring locales. There are 25 distinct ethnic
minority groups that call this area home; the Bai
people are the largest group, and are known for
their genius in irrigation and astronomy. They
are primarily Buddhist, with strong animist elements also figuring in their worldview. The Bai
esteem the color white as pure and lucky, so look
for the women in their telltale white coats.
Transfer to the Linden Center in Xizhou for check
in, then head out for a walk through the surrounding village. Visit the market, local shops,
talk with locals and learn about the history
of Xizhou. Afterwards, take a horse cart ride
through the village, to the lake and stop at a
few of the local Benzhu temples. While at the
Linden Center we will have an opportunity to
partake in a cooking class. The exact day and
time will be determined closer to departure.
Overnight The Linden Center (B,L,D). A true
immersion into authentic Chinese culture awaits
guests at this restored dynastic-era complex.
Guests reside in an expansive and luxurious
courtyard home in Xizhou, a pristine village in
Yunnan Province. The facility is a nationally
protected heritage site that has been painstakingly restored to its former elegance, pursuant
to years of consultation with experts in architectural historic preservation, while incorporating
modern amenities. It is widely recognized to be
a model of cultural conservation. Guests touch
the elusive “old” China and leave enriched by a
singular experience.

Xizhou village. Traditionally-clad Bai men and
women participate in this daily market. Stop and
visit traditionally handcrafted food stands, and
see how local ingredients such as noodles are
made. We will also have a wonderful opportunity to visit with local families in their homes,
an insightful and memorable experience. After lunch travel to Zhoucheng, renowned for its
colorful tie-dye cloth and clothing. We will visit
one of the ancient courtyards where they tie
the cloth, design patterns, and make their own
textiles. Stop and visit an old weaver, Buddhist
temple and village square. During our explorations we’ll be sure to take the cable car to rise
above Dali for spectacular views. Overnight The

- Today take a half-day trip to Erhai Lake. Enjoy
lunch, then wander through the local market
and explore the fisherman’s temple. Drive to
Dali for an afternoon visit to the Goddess of
Mercy Temple (Guanyin Tang). Legend holds that
the Goddess of Mercy brought a huge boulder
here on her back to block enemy invaders. This
temple is essentially Buddhist, yet eclectic and
authentic, a great spot to see locals worshipping. Return to Xizhou. Overnight The Linden

Lijiang. On the way, visit Bai villages famous for
their traditional architecture.
Arrive in Lijiang by lunch time. Lijiang is the
home of the Naxi ethnic group, a matriarchal
society descended from Tibetan nomads. The
women are easy to spot in their traditional blue
hats and crisscrossed capes. This picturesque
town is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets,
canals, tiny bridges and red lanterns by the hundreds. There will be
time to wander through
the enchanting Old Town,
declared a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 1997.
Dinner will be on your
own tonight. Overnight
Banyan Tree Lijiang (B,L).

Tree houses a collection
of sublime villas that

- Day 9: Lijiang/ Countryside
- This morning visit the Baisha Village, with its
frescoes dating from the Ming and Qing dynastic eras. While here, visit a local Naxi family
in their home for insight
into local ways. Then stop
at Joseph Rock’s house
in Yuhu Village. Dr. Rock
was a renowned botanist
and ethnographer of the
Naxi people who spent 25
years in this biodiversity
hotspot, cataloguing plants
and submitting articles
to National Geographic
magazine on the life and
customs of the Naxi tribe.
Many species of plants that
he first identified for the
western world can be found
today at Arnold’s Arboretum
at Harvard. Afterwards,
stop at Black Dragon Pool,
one of the most picturesque spots in southwest
China, and time permitting the Dongba Cultural
Museum. This evening enjoy
a Naxi music and dance
performance before dinner. Perhaps try the local
specialty, Yiliang roast
duck, made crispy by a
honey coating roasted with
pine branches and needles. Overnight Banyan Tree Lijiang (B,L,D).

- Day 10: Tiger Leaping Gorge/Gyalthang (Shangri-la)
- Drive to the Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the
world’s deepest river canyons. The majesty of
this gorge—with its plunging steel-grey walls,
raging rapids, terraced rice fields and Naxi hamlets—simply does not submit well to the photographer’s lens. Legend holds that a tiger leapt
across the middle rapids to escape a hunter, but
please do not attempt to test the gorge’s jumpability! Next we’ll make our way to Shigu (Stone
Drum Town), with its ancient marble carving in
the shape of a gong. This ancient, quaint town
at 10,800 feet is flanked by willow groves, and
provides a view of the Yangzi River’s first bend,
where China’s great river makes a dramatic turn
to the north.
Continue driving through farm and pastureland, arriving this afternoon in the town known as Gyalthang to the local Tibetans, as Zhongdian in Chinese, and renamed Shangri-la in 2001. Although there is some evidence to suggest that the inspiration for the fictional utopia of James Hilton’s Lost Horizon is rooted in Joseph Rock’s accounts of this area, it’s more likely the Shangri-la alias is a rather kitsch ploy by the Chinese tourism board to inflate the town’s mystical merits. What’s in a name? Quite a bit, it seems, but whatever the moniker, this area could well pass for the quintessential Himalayan utopia with its relaxed Tibetan culture, magnificent monastery and transfixing landscapes. Abundant grasslands surround the town, where cattle, sheep and yaks graze. Enjoy a Tibetan hotpot dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Songtsam Retreat (B,L,D). The boutique Songtsam is a gorgeous property in traditional Tibetan style. It enjoys a superb location and exudes a sense of refined tranquility. Beds are on a traditional futon-style platform. Suites are perched above the main reception and restaurant area; one ascends a flight of 50 steps.
- Day 11: Gyalthang (Shangri-la) Horse Festival
- Today experience a local celebration—the Khampa (Eastern Tibetan) Horse Festival. Ethnic Tibetans from the most remote areas of Yunnan gather for this special annual event to participate in horse races and a show of traditional acrobatics on horseback. This spectacle recalls a way of life that has existed for centuries in this area and on the Tibetan plateau. Witness the opening ceremony at Wufengshan Stadium where equestrian displays and cultural performances will kick off the events. By special invitation, we will join a local Tibetan group to visit their camp for a picnic lunch. This afternoon continue watching the events. Tonight stroll through the old town and join local Tibetans for Guozhuang dancing and music. Overnight Songtsam Retreat (B,L,D).
- Day 12: Ganden Sumtseling/Gyalthang
- This morning visit the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery built by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century. It is the most important monastery in southwest China, with over 600 Buddhist monks currently in residence, and it continues to be a stronghold of Tibetan culture. Classical, imposing architecture recalls the Potala Palace in Lhasa, and brightly colored thangka murals, yak butter lamps and tinkling temple bells complete a picture of Tibetan monastic life. Like many religious sites in China it sustained devastating damage during the Cultural Revolution, but has since been restored, beginning in 1983. We will receive a special blessing from a living Buddha, a remarkable experience. According to Buddhist belief this bestows upon recipients good health, safe travels, compassion and peace. Then visit the nearby village of Khena that supports the monastery. Dinner is on your own tonight. Overnight Songtsam Retreat (B,L).
- Day 13: Gyalthang/Countryside
- Head north to the Napha Lake Reserve. This area is a lake for some months of the year then around May it becomes an enormous meadow of wildflowers, carpeted with irises and yellow buttercups. Then drive through the spectacular, rugged limestone of the Yangzi/Mekong divide. Stop at the villages of the Nishi Valley, home to traditional potters and wood carvers. Visit a workshop to meet a local artist. The rich land of this area yields olives, pomegranates, oranges and medicinal herbs. Dinner will be on your own tonight, offering opportunities to explore or relax. Overnight Songtsam Retreat (B,L).
- Day 14: Kunming
- This morning fly back to Kunming. Enjoy continued exploration of this area, including the
Yunnan Nationalities Museum before enjoying some free time to shop or explore on own.
Reconvene for a farewell dinner. Overnight Green
Lake Hotel (B,D).
