Huayhuash Trek

This outstanding trekking circuit is perfect for the serious trekker who enjoys getting out amongst incredible mountains and into one of the most remote and beautiful trekking regions in the Peruvian Andes.
This outstanding trekking circuit is perfect for the serious trekker who enjoys getting out amongst incredible mountains and into one of the most remote and beautiful trekking regions in the Peruvian Andes. The Huayhuash circuit is not a technical trek, however you can spend up to seven hours per day trekking, crossing eight high passes, all of them above 4500 metres, so a good level of fitness is required. The rewards from this trek are immense. Towering mountain peaks such as Yerupaja (6634m) and Sarapo (6126m) await you. You’ll witness hanging glaciers and brilliant turquoise lakes and you’ll stay at campsites with the most incredible views. From the climbing centre of Huaraz you will undertake a short acclimatisation trek to Honqopampa followed by a full day hike to Lake 69 and the Llanganuco Valley. There are stunning views of Huascaran Norte (6768m). The Huayhuash trek commences from the small village of Matacancha where you will meet your trekking guides, porters and mules. The next ten days will be spent on the Huayhuash circuit before arriving back in Llamac where your trek ends. From here you return to Huaraz where a warm bed awaits! The following day you will continue to Lima where your adventure ends.
Day 1: Lima
On arrival at Lima airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel located in the heart of Lima’s well-known coastal district of Miraflores. Please look for your transfer driver immediately after exiting the customs area of the airport. In the evening you will meet your local leader and the other members of your group for a pre-tour briefing. Please check the notice board at Reception to confirm the time and place of your meeting. The briefing is generally followed by an optional group dinner.
Day 2: Huaraz (3150m)
This morning we depart Lima by bus for our 8-hour journey to the climbing centre of Huaraz. The city lies at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca and has beautiful views of over 20 snow-capped mountains, all over 5000 metres – the most famous being Huascaran, which is the highest mountain in Peru at 6768 metres.

Meals included: 1 breakfast
Day 3: Mini Tek - Huaraz (approx 5 hours)
We depart Huaraz early in the morning for an acclimatisation trek. From our starting point at Shimpi, we follow the river basin of the Lucma River, and ascend through fields of flowers to the high point of our walk at 3500 metres (approximately three hours). From here we have spectacular views of the mountains of the Cordillera Blanca. Continuing on through a flat area, we then descend to Honqopampa, an archaeological site that dates from the Wari Culture (600-900AD), at an altitude of 3400 metres. We return to Huaraz by bus, stopping at the villages of Pampamaca, known for its textiles and Tarica, a town of ceramists, along the way.

Meals included: 1 breakfast
Day 4: Mini Trek to Lake 69 - Huaraz (approx 6.5 hours)
This is another acclimatization day and a great walk in its own right. Heading towards the north of the Callejon de Huaylas, we drive to the buried town of Yungay, which was totally covered by an avalanche, and ascend toward the Cordillera Blanca. We visit the lakes of Orkoncocha and Chinancocha (3850m) en-route to Cebollapampa where the second of our acclimatisation treks will begin. Trekking towards Demanda Valley, we ascend to Lake 69 (4500m), which lies at the base of Chacraraju Peak. During lunch we enjoy the magnificent views of the lagoon before trekking to Cebollapampa and then driving back to Huaraz.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch
Day 5: Cuartelhuain (approx 2 hours)
After breakfast we drive via the Conoqcocha - Chiquian route to Matacancha, our starting point. It is here that we meet our trekking crew before setting out for our campsite at Cuartelhuain, just a few minutes away.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 6: Mitucocha Lagoon (approx 5 hours)
We start early for our three-hour trek to the Cacananpunta Pass (4700m). Given clear conditions, the views are fabulous. Continuing through the valley we reach our destination at Mitucocha Lagoon (4200m) for a well-earned rest!

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 7: Carhuacocha Lake – (approx 5 hours)
From Mitucocha we ascend to Punta Carhuac (4650m) where we have spectacular views of the Siula and Yerupaja mountains. We descend to Carhuacocha Lake (4100m) and set up camp on the shore.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 8: Huayhuash – (approx 4-7 hours)
There are two alternative routes to our campsite at Huayhuash (4350m). One route follows the Queropalca valley downstream before ascending towards the Carnicero Pass (4600m). We then descend to Huayhuash with excellent views of Carnicero and Trapecio along the way. The second route is a more difficult walk via Laguna Siula and offers fantastic views of Carnicero, Yerupaja and Siula. Siula has received recent publicity as the mountain where Joe Simpson (of Touch the Void fame) made his dramatic ascent and descent! Our tour leader will decide the route at the time, as it largely depends on weather conditions and group fitness.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 9: Lake Viconga (approx 5 hours)
Our trek today approaches the south end of the Cordillera Huayhuash. We ascend to the Portachuelo pass (4700m) and are rewarded with breathtaking views of the nearby Cordillera Raura range. Descending south, we reach Lake Viconga (4500m) and camp nearby. A short walk away is the rustic Putcka Thermal Springs where we can rest our weary feet in a hot bath.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 10: Huanacpatay (approx 7 hours)
Our fifth day of trekking is a long, yet rewarding one. Our aim is to cross the Cuyoc Pass (5000m), the highest point on the circuit, where we can see superb views of the Cordillera Huayhuash and Cordillera Raura ranges. We descend towards the Huanacpatay valley to our camp (4200m) amongst the huge Andean peaks.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 11: Huatia (approx 8 hours)
Today we continue our trek by descending the Huayllapa valley to the Huayllapa village (3550m), before ascending the Tapush valley to our camp at Huatia (4300m).

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 12: Gashpapampa (approx 6 Hours)
We ascend towards the Tapush Pass (4800m) and then descend to our camp at Gashpapampa (4400m), near Susococha Lake. From our campsite we have impressive views of the Suerococha Peak.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 13: Jahuacpcha (approx 5 Hours)
Today our hike takes a direct path via the Yaucha Pass (4800m), with magnificent views of Yerupaja and Rasac amongst others, before descending to the beautiful Jahuacocha Lake, where we will set up camp (4050m).

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 14: Lamac & Huaraz (approx 4 hours)
On our final day of trekking we head down the Quebrada Pacllon Valley and ascend to our final pass – Pampa Llamac (4400m). The views of the surrounding peaks are amazing. From Pampa Llamac we descend to the village of Llamac, which completes our trekking circuit. Here we rendezvous with our bus and return to Huaraz, arriving in the late afternoon. We have the opportunity celebrate our achievement with a dinner accompanied Andean music and performances.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 15: Lima
After breakfast we catch a comfortable regular coach for an eight-hour journey back to Lima, where our adventure ends upon arrival. If you require accommodation in Lima tonight and any other subsequent nights, it is possible to book this when booking your tour. Please ask your travel agent. We normally arrive back in Lima between 7pm and 8pm, but please be warned that this can vary due to road and traffic conditions. If you are planning to depart Lima tonight, we advise that you do not book to depart until at least after 10pm (22:00 hrs).
