Patagonia Paine Circuit

Located at the southern tip of mainland South America, the rugged territory of Patagonia is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and particularly for the incredible Torres del Paine.
Located at the southern tip of mainland South America, the rugged territory of Patagonia is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and particularly for the incredible Torres del Paine. At its heart is the Torres del Paine National Park, where pink granite towers, iridescent blue lakes and surreally sculpted glaciers compete for the viewer's admiration. This is also the setting for one of the world's great trekking challenges, the 90 kilometre circuit of the Torres del Paine Massif. Involving 6 days of hiking, by way of several lakeside camps and the remote John Garner Pass, this is the ultimate Patagonia trekking holiday: enhanced by excursions on foot to the most spectacular viewpoints in the Ascencio and Frances valleys. Our Patagonia holiday itinerary now includes a day's hike along the northern edge of Lake Nordenskjold, which effectively completes the whole circuit of the Torres del Paine. A support team of packhorses and porters means you are free to devote your energies to enjoying what has been voted the most dramatic mountain region on the planet!

Day 1: Arrive Calafate
Rendezvous at the group hotel in Calafate. A group airport transfer is provided. KE Land Only services begin with an overnight stay at a hotel in Calafate. Note that meals are not included on this day.
Day 2: Drive to the Las Torres Ecocamp
After an early breakfast, we take the local bus to Argentina's border with Chile at Cerro Castillo. Here, we meet our private transport for the continuation of our journey to the Torres del Paine National Park. En route, we will visit several accessible viewpoints including Lago Azul, and have the chance to take our first photographs of the Paine Massif, including the Cuernos del Paine and Paine Grande. We overnight at the award winning Las Torres Ecocamp located at the eastern end of Lago Nordenskjold. This evening we make final preparations for the circuit trek, which will include dividing our personal clothing and overnight gear into 2 'dry bags'. One of these dry bags will accompany us on the first 3 days of trekking, whilst the other will be taken to Camp Grey for us to pick up on our arrival there on Day 5. Anything not required on the trek (including your KE trek bag) can be left in the care of our Chilean agent at the Las Torres Ecocamp. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (B,L,D)
Day 3: Trek to Camp Dickson
A long day of at least 9 hours trekking, covering close to 30 kilometres (18 miles). We start out directly from the Ecocamp and hike on the east side of the Paine River. Our team of arrieros (horsemen) will pack the group's gear onto the horses as we begin the trek via Lago Paine to Lago Dickson. The surrounding terrain is mostly easy going, giving us plenty of time to admire the central tower in the background and a spectacular view of the Paine mountain range. As we get closer to our camp, we can see the glacier in the distance flowing into Lake Dickson. At the southern end of the lake we set up camp close to the Refugio Dickson which is equipped with a small store, café and hot showers. There are great views here of part of the Hielo Patagonico Sur (South Patagonia Icefield). A long day. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Trek to Los Perros Camp
An easier day, as we hike to the camp known as Los Perros (the dogs). This will take us around 4 or 5 hours to do the 10 kilometre (6 mile) walk. Following the Los Perros River, our route takes us through some big stands of southern beech forest, where we should see Magellanic woodpeckers and parakeets. Before arriving at the camp, we pass close to Laguna Los Perros, where the Los Perros Glacier calves its icebergs directly into the lake. We will be using porters only for the next section of the circuit and we must cut down our gear to absolute essentials. The horsemen will carry out your first clothes duffle, now full of dirty clothes. Your sleeping bag and sleeping mat will be carried by the porters. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Los Perros to Camp Grey
An early start is required for the long climb to reach the John Garner Pass, the highest point of the circuit at 1300 metres (4000 feet). As we crest the pass we are treated to an awe-inspiring view of the Grey Glacier, an enormous fractured mass of ice choking the valley. The route continues roughly south beside the glacier which is over 10 miles long and 5 miles across. The path travels along forested slopes with occasional landslides. This is a long, but rewarding day of 8 to 10 hours, covering approximately 14.5 kilometres (9 miles). On arrival at tonight's camp we will have access to the things we packed in the second duffle on day 2. Overnight at Camp Grey. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Trek beside Lago Grey to Lago Pehoe
Today, we will trek alongside the Grey Glacier until it carves into Lake Grey. The view over the lake, with numerous giant icebergs drifting across the waters is very impressive at this point. Finally, the track climbs onto flat ridges and passes a small lake one hour before descending through a shallow dry valley to arrive at Lago Pehoe. We spend the night in our camp by the turquoise lake Pehoe. Today’s walk is around 11kms (7 miles) but mostly downhill and should take approximately 4 hours. Facilities at the nearby refuge (bar and showers) are available for use. (B, L, D)
Day 7: Hike into the Frances Valley
This is a long day of 7 or 8 hours but well worth the effort. From camp, the track makes its way north through undulating terrain of mixed grassland and light forest, passing two small lakes and continues by the south-east slopes of Cerro Paine to meet the River Frances. From here, we follow the river upstream passing Camp Italiano, below Glaciar Frances and, weather permitting, continue to a hut built for a British climbing expedition. This magnificent setting is surrounded by high peaks on all sides, the Cuernos del Paine (the horns) being especially spectacular. Descending the valley back to Camp Italiano, we turn to the east and follow a trail for 2 hours to Camp Cuernos, beside Lake Nordenskjold. (B, L, D)
Day 8: Trek alongside Lake Nordenskjold
After breakfast at camp, we continue our eastward hike along the northern margin of Lake Nordenskjold. There are great views across the lake and also interesting perspectives of the rocky Cuernos del Paine to the north. This final day of trekking effectively completes our circuit, as we end up at the Las Torres Ecocamp after around 5 hours of trekking. Overnight at the splendid Ecocamp. (B, L, D)
Day 9: Day-hike to the Torres viewpoint
In addition to making a circuit around the Paine Massif, we also include the opportunity to reach the best viewpoints in the range. The last of these is the Torres Base viewpoint at the head of the Ascencio Valley. Today we make our approach to the centre of the range and the several granite spires which comprise the Paine Towers. The summits of these spectacular peaks are close to 3000 metres (10,000 feet) and are the remains of a rocky cirque that has been gradually eroded by glacial action. It is a 3-hour trek up to the Torres Basecamp and then a further 1 hour, crossing quite rough terrain, to reach the viewpoint for the towers. Given good weather, the sight of these rock towers, reflected in the lake below, is quite breathtaking. After an hour, taking photos and admiring the view, we trek back out to the Las Torres Ecocamp. The total hiking distance today is 25 kilometre (15 miles). (B, L, D)
Day 10: Drive to Calafate
Departing the Torres del Paine region, we recross into Argentina at Cerro Castillo. Here we catch a bus for the journey back to Calafate (around 6 hours). On arrival we transfer to our hotel. (B, L)
Day 11: Depart Calafate
KE Land Only services end after breakfast. The morning is free to enjoy the many charms of Calafate. In the mid afternoon we have a single timed group transfer to the airport. (B)

We had an excellent trip in part due to the perfect weather and in part because the party moved at a reasonably pace. Both leaders were very knowledgeable about the environment (in the widest sense) and were excellent.

KE Adventure has come a long way during the time I have been travelling with them (11 years and counting). I particularly like the new website, with its excellent interactive features. I am also very happy with the support I received from the KE Adventure team before and during the trip.

The EcoCamp in Torres del Paine was very good, and a different experience. The food prepared by the crew on the trek was outstanding, the best food I've ever had on a trek and plenty of it too. The support crew was excellent too. I found Roberto an excellent trip leader in all respects, including being very sociable and knowledgeable. He was in control of everything that needed to be taken care of and was very good with providing information. Everything was excellent! It's one of the best managed treks I've been on with any company. Good paced trekking days with a good combination of long and shorter days. We were lucky to be a small group of like-minded people too, which made the trip even more excellent.
