Mont Blanc Snow Shoe Week

Snowshoeing is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in the world. During the winter months the Alpine landscape is transformed to a pristine white wilderness and the air is normally clear and still.
Snowshoeing is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in the world. During the winter months the Alpine landscape is transformed to a pristine white wilderness and the air is normally clear and still. Travelling through the quiet and serenity of the snow-covered landscape is a rewarding experience and snowshoeing greatly increases the potential to get out into the mountains. Modern snowshoes are light and easy to use so it is possible to progress very quickly from easy trails to steep mountain slopes. This week of centre-based, guided snowshoeing is designed to appeal to regular mountain walkers wishing to learn or develop basic snowshoe techniques as well as those with previous snow-shoeing experience. The series of tours that we undertake during the week will be flexible and will depend on the prevailing conditions at the time. The guides will make the final route decisions for each day based on their extensive local knowledge to ensure that we get the very best out of the week. During the week instruction will be given in the use of safety equipment and winter survival skills. After familiarising ourselves with basic techniques will then progress to steeper terrain, using ski roads where appropriate to access the best day-routes, leading to high viewpoints and summits. Ascending open, sun-drenched snow slopes above the tree-line, with breathtaking views of the Chamonix Aiguilles, the magic of snowshoe hiking will be immediately apparent. Returning to the valley each evening, our comfortable chalet base will provide a great place to rest and recuperate ahead of the next day's adventure.

Notes: Prices and itineraries shown for trips departing in 2013 may be subject to change although we will endeavour to keep any price increases for 2013 trips to a minimum. 2013 prices will be confirmed in October 2012.
Day 1: Arrive in Argentiere
The group will rendezvous at our chalet in Argentiere (altitude 1240m / 4660ft), just outside Chamonix. Here, you will be welcomed and made to feel at home. In the evening, we will have an informal chat about the week ahead. You will meet your guide at approximately 6pm who will check out your clothing etc to decide if you will need to pick up any further items of equipment before setting out in the morning. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner and overnight at the chalet. Included meals: Dinner (D)
Day 2: Introductory walk in Chamonix
After fitting our snowshoes and taking time to look at technique we will also introduce you to using avalanche transceivers, essential safety equipment when walking in the mountains in winter. We aim to spend the day enjoying a walk with views of the Mont Blanc Massif from the Chalets de Chailloux, a fabulous vantage point that gives superb views of the Chamonix Valley and glaciers. If we have time we plan to spend a little time in Chamonix itself before heading back to our chalet before sitting down to our 3-course dinner. Ascent 570 metres. (B, D)
Day 3: Loriaz, Vallorcine
We head towards the Swiss border and the hamlet of Vallorcine - the ‘valley of the bears'. Unfortunately because the locals used to pay their taxes in bear meat there are none left today! We leave the village to climb steadily until we reach the open mountainside of the alpage at Loriaz. If the conditions permit we can also ascend the higher point of the Charmoz. Our local walk allows for plenty of time to get back to enjoy the hot tub and sauna! Ascent 700 metres. (B ,D)
Day 4: Mont de l’Arpille
Today we have an ascent of one of the best viewpoints of the area. We drive to the village of Ravoire above the vineyards of the Rhone Valley. We then head up initially through pine woods, watch out for squirrels and roe deer, and then into more open ground as we arrive at the alpage. We then head for the summit which offers incredible panoramas of Mont Blanc, the Dents du Midi and the Rhone Valley. Ascent 770 metres. (B ,D)
Day 5: Tête de la Sallaz
We begin by driving up a steep mountain road as we head to the high village of Romme. After leaving the tiny ski area in the village we head up through the pine forests before emerging to wonderful views of the region. The forests are magical in fresh snow, a real winter wonderland. Our goal is the summit of the Tête de la Sallaz which is a stunning situation with incredible views to Mont Blanc. Ascent 700 metres. (B, D)
Day 6: Grand St Bernard Monastery
We head off today for our overnight stay in the famous Grand St Bernard Monastery which sits on a historic high pass at 2469m. This area is steeped in history and we follow in the footsteps of Hannibal, and Napoleon as we climb its snowy slopes. In more recent times the Monastery has been famous for its iconic mountain rescue dogs. In the morning we leave St Bernard to climb to the Col Ouest de Barasson at 2635m to enjoy views down into Italy before heading off to the Monastery perched on the Swiss Italian border. Ascent 900 metres (B, D)
Day 7: Grand St Bernard Monastery
Today we plan to soak up the atmosphere of this high pass, and explore the area around the Monastery. If conditions allow we will make an ascent of one of the nearby peaks or cols which will offer wonderful views, such as the Col du Bastillon, where you can look down into the lovely Swiss Val Ferret. Tonight we return to our chalet in Argentiere. Ascent 600-800metres. (B, D)
Day 8: Departure Day
KE Land Only package services end with breakfast at the chalet. (B)

Russell Jefford,
The quantity & quality of info on the website & trip dossier are real selling points - all looks very professional and creates a good impression and builds anticipation. The kind of nerd (like me) who reads technical swing tickets on goretex jackets laps up this kind of thing...

This was my first time in the Mont Blanc area, my first time on snowshoes, and my first time in the mountains in winter - what an incredible new experience on all fronts! The fifth day of the trip stands out for me: We drove into Switzerland to climb Mont de l'Arpille--it was a beautiful blue sky day, wonderful new snow, challenging ascent, and incredible views looking down into the Rhone Valley. At the end of the hike, we stopped for a nice cup of hot chocolate before heading back to the chalet, where we had afternoon tea and cake awaiting us. Then that evening we did a night snowshoe to a local Savoyarde restaurant and dined on tartiflette while being warmed by a cozy fireplace. Great day, great week!

This was a really good trip. I enjoyed snowshoeing and the alpine scenery very much. We also had an outstanding leader.Overall a great way for hillwalkers to enjoy the alps in winter. I have undertaken a number of other trips with KE and had found the overall standard to be very good.
