Land of the Incas - Peru Family Adventure

Starting out with some fun and safe rafting on the scenic Urubamba River, this unique Peruvian family adventure continues with an exploration on horse-back (or on foot, if preferred) amongst some of the impressive Inca ruins that surround the Andean city of Cusco.
Starting out with some fun and safe rafting on the scenic Urubamba River, this unique Peruvian family adventure continues with an exploration on horse-back (or on foot, if preferred) amongst some of the impressive Inca ruins that surround the Andean city of Cusco. We then descend to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where, from our comfortable accommodation in a lovely old hacienda, we visit the traditional Indian market at Pisac and have the option of a day's fun (and largely downhill) mountain biking, which takes us by way of the picturesque saltpans at Maras. The adventure continues with the classic 1-day Inca Trail hike up to the Sun Gate, where we have our first glimpse of Machu Picchu (Note: If Inca Trail permits are not available at the time of booking, an alternative activity to the Royal Inca Trail is available which will still include a visit to Machu Picchu). Then, after a night in the colourful town of Aguas Calientes (with the chance to try out the hot springs), we make an early morning return to the 'Lost City of the Incas' and spend most of the day there, including a tour with a specialist guide. In the afternoon, we take the famous train ride back to Cusco. A free day in this former capital of Peru allows us time to catch our breath and to do a bit of independent sightseeing, before travelling home or setting out on one of the excellent extension options. This is an unbeatable Peruvian adventure suitable for families with children aged 10 and over and there are departures that coincide with most of the school holidays.

Additional Information
The child price age for this holiday is: 10-12 years
The group size for this holiday is: 4-16

Holiday Deposit
In order to ensure your place on the Inca Trail, KE will need to purchase your Inca Trail Permit as soon as the trip reaches the 'guaranteed to run' status. Inca trail permits are non refundable (except in circumstances where we have to cancel the holiday). The deposit for this holiday is higher than our usual deposit to cover purchase of the Inca Trail permit. However, please note that the permit fee is included in the holiday price.

Note: Prices and itineraries shown for holidays departing in 2013 may be subject to change, although we will endeavour to keep any price increases to a minimum. 2013 prices will be confirmed in October 2012.
Day 1: Arrive Cusco, walking tour of the city
Arriving in the former Inca capital of Southern Peru, we are met by a KE representative. KE Land Only package services begin with a transfer to the group’s hotel close to the city’s central square - the Plaza de Armas. As we are now at an altitude of 3200 metres, it is best to spend the rest of today taking it easy in order to acclimatise to the rarefied air. We can try the local altitude remedy, coca tea which is generally available throughout the day in the hotel lobby. In the afternoon there is the option of taking a relaxing walking tour of the city. The heart of Cusco is quite small and easy to get around on foot. Every small street or alley-way that we enter and every corner that we turn, brings another surprise, in the form of superbly constructed Incaic walls or the rather more architecturally extravagant Spanish Colonial churches and palaces. The city was once capital of the extensive Inca Empire and since that time has seen many changes since Pizarro took control in 1535. In the evening, we have the opportunity to relax in one of the city’s excellent restaurants. Note that meals are not included on this day.
Day 2: Drive to the Urubamba River, rafting
Driving out of Cusco, we travel to the upper section of the Urubamba River where we will choose the best point to enter the river, depending on the water level. Full training will be given in the fun sport of whitewater rafting. Though we will certainly want to shoot some of the easier rapids, there is also plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We return to Cusco in the evening. Included meals: Breakfast and lunch (B,L)
Day 3: Cusco, sightseeing including on horseback
A relaxed day of sightseeing, visiting the major Inca sites of the Cusco Valley. We will travel around by car, on foot and on horseback today. For smaller people we have smaller horses, specially chosen for their easy-going temperament and good nature. For those who do not wish to do any riding, for this part of the day it will be no problem to follow the horses by car or on foot. We will take a picnic lunch and visit the Inca fort of Sacsayhuaman with its incredible stone walls before returning to Cusco. Today will give us the chance to acclimatise to the thin Andean air and at the same time learn from our guide about the fascinating Inca civilisation and its battles with the Spanish invaders. (B,L)
Day 4: Canoeing on the Urubamba River
A chance to do it yourself today with a morning of inflatable canoeing on a scenic and fun stretch of the Rio Urubamba. We then continue down the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the quaint town of Pisac, where there is time to look around the market streets. Weavings and hand-painted pottery are amongst the most colourful handicrafts. We stay overnight tonight in a hotel in Pisac. (B,L)
Day 5: Mountain biking
A short transfer takes us to Chinchero for the start of probably the best one day mountain bike adventure in Peru. Largely downhill, we pass Lake Huaypo and enjoy great views of the Vilcanota mountain range. This fun dirt road mountain bike descent into the Sacred Valley is suitable for all the family although previous off-road riding experience is desirable to get the best out of the day. We have a constant support vehicle on hand which can pick up weary riders and anyone not wanting to ride can follow the group in the support vehicle and possibly do a bit of hiking en route. The final descent on mule trails is through the spectacular working salt-pans of Maras. We then continue by bus through the sacred valley to Ollantaytambo where we check into our hotel. (B,L)
Day 6: Trek the Royal Inca Trail
We catch the early morning train from Ollantaytambo beside the now torrential Urubamba River to km104. Here, we start our hike along the Royal Inca Trail. Whilst walking all we will carry is a daypack and our overnight luggage will be transferred to our hotel in Aguas Calientes (now also known as 'Pueblo Machu Picchu') to await our arrival. An initial hot ascent is rewarded by the arrival at Winay Wayna, a beautiful Inca ruin full of swallows and orchids. A contour path through the fascinating cloud forest leads to Inti Puncu (the Gateway of the Sun) and our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Walking downhill, we pass through the ruins and catch a bus down to our hotel in the colourful town of Aguas Calientes. (B,L)

Anyone without a permit for the Inca trail or anyone who does not wish to make the hike up to Inti Punti from km104, will remain on the train to Aguas Calientes, check into the hotel, and then there are a number of options we can choose from with our guide. We can attempt the climb of Putucusi Mountain for a spectacular view of Machu Picchu, we can hike to Mandor waterfall, or we can relax in the local hot springs and explore the market town of Aguas Calientes.
Day 7: Machu Picchu, then train to Cusco
An early morning start to catch the first bus back up to Machu Picchu – it is important to get back to the site as early as possible to take advantage of the spectacular early morning light. A local guide will give us the 'tour' of Machu Picchu and we will also have enough time to go exploring on our own. Highlights include; the Inca Bridge and the Temple of the Moon, as well as the optional climb up to the summit of Huayna Picchu which overlooks the ruins (this takes about an hour). You are free to do whatever you like, providing you get back down on time to catch the afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo, where we meet our bus for the transfer back to Cusco and our hotel. (B)
Day 8: A free day in Cusco
A free day for relaxation or to further explore this wonderful city. There is so much to see and do in Cusco that we dedicate a whole day to doing just that. Whether your interest is exploring Inca ruins, visiting Colonial churches, bargain hunting in Indian markets or just relaxing over a cappuccino on a terrace overlooking the Plaza de Armas, Cusco has it all. In the evening we can enjoy a ‘farewell’ dinner taken in one of the city’s excellent restaurants. (B)
Day 9: Depart Cusco
KE Land Only package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided on this day. (B)

The rafting was particularly enjoyable. The quality of the home stay accommodation was much higher than expected. The mini fiesta put on by the host was a welcome bonus. Another highlight was the picnic lunches that were served 'in the middle of nowhere'. Home cooking at 4000m WOW!
