Family Adventure on Spain's Costa Verde

On Spain's quiet north-west coast, the region of Asturias is the perfect place for a family adventure holiday. The 'Costa Verde' or green coast is reminiscent of the Cornish coast, with its steep sided river valleys running into sandy bays.
On Spain's quiet north-west coast, the region of Asturias is the perfect place for a family adventure holiday. The 'Costa Verde' or green coast is reminiscent of the Cornish coast, with its steep sided river valleys running into sandy bays. Whilst just inland the Picos de Europa, the largest single mass of mountain limestone in Europe, provides a most impressive backdrop. The dramatic karst scenery, picturesque villages and fine beaches make this region an ideal destination for a family adventure holiday. The region is also special on account of the local, rather Celtic, culture that continues to thrive in the towns and villages of the area. Home to some of Europe's most impressive wildlife species, including wolf, bear, chamois and griffon vulture, the Picos de Europa was Spain's first national park. In this new family adventure we have put together a range of activities and sightseeing that will make for an exciting, fun filled and memorable holiday. Canoeing on the Sella River and a leisurely morning's horse riding provide our introduction to northern Spain's family-friendly Asturias. We then hike to a mountain refuge on the slopes of the dramatic Picos de Europa for a day exploring and enjoying the amazing mountain views. Transferring to the ‘Costa Verde', we will spend a free day on the beach, hunt for dinosaur footprints on a coastal walk, hike to the stunning 360 degree viewpoint of Pienzu and visit a fun high ropes course. A world away from the overcrowded southern costas, this part of Spain is ideal for family adventure.

Notes: Prices and itineraries shown for trips departing in 2013 may be subject to change although we will endeavour to keep any price increases for 2013 trips to a minimum. 2013 prices will be confirmed in October 2012.
Day 1: Arrive in Soto de Onis
Rendezvous at the group hotel in Soto de Onis. A complimentary group airport transfer from Santander (approximately 1 hour) is provided. KE Land Only package services begin with the evening meal. Included meals: Dinner (D)
Day 2: Canoe descent of the River Sella
After breakfast we drive to the put-in point on the river Sella to begin our descent. No previous experience is needed for this as the canoes are large and stable. We have chosen a section of the river perfect for youngsters, providing just the right amount of excitement and fun. This part of the trip will be led by experienced, qualified river guides. All necessary safety equipment including helmets and buoyancy jackets is provided. We will stop for lunch en route and on reaching the take out point we meet our vehicle and return to the hotel in Soto de Onis. We will have some free time, perhaps we can visit the local zoo just 200 meters from our hotel, before gathering again for the evening meal. Included meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Morning horse riding, afternoon hike to Vega Redonda Refuge
This morning we have the option to go horse riding on some of the beautiful trails in the area around Cangas de Onis. After lunch, we drive up into the mountains of the Picos. We follow a mountain road for 1000m. / 3000ft. to ‘Los Lagos’ From here we hike on a good trail through alpine meadows and spectacular limestone scenery for approximately 3 hours to the Vega Redonda Refuge at 1410m. / 4600ft. We have our dinner and stay overnight in this basic but comfortable mountain hut, set in a very dramatic location in the heart of the Picos mountains. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Hike to the Mirador de Ordiales and transfer to the coast.
After breakfast, we continue our walk to the Mirador de Ordiales following an easy trail with less than 300m. / 1000ft. of ascent. The view from the Mirador over the karst landscape and down across the forests and villages of the Rio Dobra Valley is simply superb. We return to the refuge and then descend to (we do not return to the lakes) where our vehicle is waiting. We now leave the mountains behind as we head for the seaside and the Costa Verde. We check into our hotel in Colunga, very close to the coast which will be our base for the next two nights. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Visit Dinosaur Museum, coastal walk hunting for dinosaur footprints
This morning we make a visit to the Museo del Jurassico de Asturias. This is a dinosaur museum located close to the tiny village of Lastres, north of Colunga. The Costa Verde is known as ‘the dinosaur coast’ because of all the Jurassic fossils found here. The museum, located on cliffs overlooking the sea, is exceptional with lots of skeletons, interactive displays, and artist depictions of dinosaurs. After the visit we head down to the beach and make our own search for dinosaur footprints. Scrambling over the rocks below the cliffs it is possible to view an example of these fossilized imprints and imagine the huge beasts that used to tread on the sands. Following a picnic lunch, we take a two hour cliff top stroll to the nearby seaside village of St Isla. Having spent the day immersed in the Jurassic period, we return to the present for our evening meal. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Free day at the beach.
The Costa Verde is a very attractive, rugged coastline with chiselled deep ravines, beautiful river valleys, tiny fishing villages, and small sandy bays offering good swimming. There is a good surfing beach near to our hotel and it is possible to hire body and/or surf boards locally, and maybe take a lesson After a full day enjoying the beach and waves we return to our hotel in Colunga. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Ascent of Pienzu
We have a short transfer this morning, driving back into the mountains to reach the viewpoint known as the Mirador del Fito., Here we begin our mountain walk climbing across the flanks of three small peaks of the Sierra del Sueve range. The final part of the trek to the summit of Pienzu (1159m. / 3800ft.) is quite steep for youngsters, but it is short and the spectacular view the Picos de Europa and of the coast between Llanes and Gijón makes all the effort worthwhile. In total the walk is around 11km / 7 miles and will take us approximately 4 hours. Following our successful conquest of Pienzu we return to our hotel on the coast. (B,L,D)
Day 8: High rope course, Llanes and transfer to Santander Airport
On our final day we make tackle an adrenaline packed high ropes course with zip lines and rope bridges in the trees. After our rope adventure we have a forty five minute bus journey taking us to what is perhaps the most famous seaside town on the Costa Verde, Llanes. We take our lunch here, hopefully finding time for some last minute souvenir shopping or a walk along the beach. The town’s traditional Indiana and Asturian architecture is remarkable, giving a feeling of timelessness, the perfect place to end our trip. After lunch we transfer (one hour) to the airport at Santander where KE Land only package services end. (B, L)

The canoeing was a really good experience. Geraldine, our guide, made the holiday stress free. She was very suppportive and encouraging throughout, and developed an excellent relationship with our ten year old daughter, who now is very enthusiasitic about going on another adventure holiday experience. It is great that she enjoyed it so much.
