Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok. Free time
We rendezvous at the group’s hotel in the city. A single timed group transfer from Bangkok Airport is available. KE Land Only package services begin with this transfer. The hotel is centrally located with air conditioning and a swimming pool. The rest of the day is free for rest and relaxation and for independent exploration of the city. The local guide will advise on places to visit. One of the best ways to explore Bangkok is by taking one of the 'long-tail' boat taxis on the network of klongs (canals) which are linked to the main Chao Phraya River. The Royal Barge Museum and Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) are good places to include in your excursion. In the evening we have a ‘welcome’ dinner at the hotel and a trip briefing from our guide. Included meals: Dinner (D)
Day 2: Sightseeing in Bangkok
Accompanied by a local guide, we will have a morning's sightseeing tour on foot and by ferry. We will visit the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha and Wat Po (Temple of the Reclining Buddha). We will find a suitable place to eat lunch and then return to the hotel to allow time for relaxing by the pool. There are plenty more sightseeing opportunities for those who do not need to rest. In the evening, the guide will help us choose a suitable place for dinner from the bewildering array of nearby restaurants. (Included meals: B,L,D)
Day 3: Free day in Bangkok, then sleeper train to Chiang Mai
A free day to further enjoy this interesting and vibrant city. The floating market is a wonderfully colourful place to visit. In the afternoon, we will meet up with our guide again and transfer to the railway station to catch the overnight sleeper train north to Chiang Mai. Train travel in Thailand is comfortable, safe, and a genuine Thai experience that makes the journey as much a part of your trip as the destination. At the station our guide takes care of everything and soon we are settled into our seats. Around 9 p.m. the train attendant will come around and make up our fold-away bunks with mattresses and fresh clean bedding. He will also hook up the curtains provided for each bunk. This is the signal for passengers to get some sleep as the train gently rocks us to sleep. Dinner on the train is included. (B, D)
Day 4: Walking tour of Chiang Mai
We awake to a very different landscape as we chug through the foothills of Northern Thailand. Arriving in Chiang Mai in the early morning, we make the transfer to our hotel in time for a late breakfast. Chiang Mai is cooler and quieter than Bangkok and after breakfast we enjoy an easy-paced walking tour of the older parts of the city, with visits to the city wall and market. In the afternoon we will drive out of the city to visit Doi Suthep Temple, reached by a stairway of more than 300 steps, lined with ornate dragons. Perched on a hilltop, the temple has a number of impressive bells and colourful murals, and commands extensive views. This evening we will be preparing our own food following a short course in traditional Thai cookery! (B,L,D)
Day 5: Day trek and elephant ride
To get ourselves into the swing of this multi-activity trip, we have an action packed taster day. The day starts out with a visit to an elephant camp, where we will meet the elephants and see the relationship that these great creatures have with their handlers. We will be treated to a show, possibly including the sight of elephants playing football. There will also be the chance to ride on an elephant, which provides a great introduction to the forest of northern Thailand and is a fun experience for youngsters and adults alike. After lunch, we will enjoy a short trek through traditional villages where we can see first hand how these farmers and herders of the hills live and how they have lived for centuries. We return to the hotel after a full day, with time for a swim before dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Free day in Chiang Mai
A day for independent exploration of Chiang Mai or simply to rest and relax by the hotel pool. This will be our last evening in Chiang Mai. (B,D)
Day 7: Drive Chiang Mai to Nan
Making a reasonably early start we drive to Nan province, a more remote part of Thailand visited by fewer tourists. The journey takes us through towns and farmland, with the landscape becoming more mountainous and forested as we get closer to Nan. We check in to our hotel in the early afternoon. Depending on the time of our arrival, there may be time to explore the town. There is a museum which showcases the area's history and its ethnic diversity, as well as several temples and a popular evening market on the banks of the Nan River. The province of Nan is one of the most beautiful and tranquil in Thailand. Its people are mostly of Laotian descent and include Hmong tribes. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Hilltribe trek
Today, we will learn a bit more about the people of this part of Thailand. Starting out with an hour's drive on a rugged road to a mountain hill tribe village, we will then trek for 4 - 5 hours (at youngsters pace) through jungle and farmland to a second hill tribe village, where our 4-wheel drive transport will be waiting for us. There is an alternative ‘short cut’ taking around 2 hours if anyone is daunted by this walk. We will have plenty of opportunity to meet the villagers who will be delighted to see western children. We will then drive to the Thai village of Had Pah Khon. This is to be our home for the next 2 nights, staying as guests of the villagers. Each family will stay with a village family – note that these are not “hilltribe” families, but normal Thai farming families. This will offer a different perspective for all on everyday Thai life. In the evening, the group will get together to eat dinner cooked by the villagers. (B,L,D)
Day 9: At the homestay village
During our time at Had Pah Khon we will have the chance to be involved in the usual daily life of the villagers. The villagers grow corn and rice and also have a silk worm farm. You will also have the chance to go fishing and swimming in the river. Lunch and dinner will be provided by the villagers. We will spend a second night in our homestay accommodation. (B,L,D)
Day 10: Drive via Sukhotai to Phitsanulok
After breakfast with the villagers, we will set off on the 3-hour drive southwards to Sukhothai, where we will stop off for a one and a half hour sightseeing tour of the Historical Park. This park is a World Heritage Site and its beautifully restored temples and monuments date back to the 13th century city of Sukhothai. We will have lunch at a local restaurant, then continue the drive to Phitsanulok and check in to a hotel. There should be time to enjoy the hotel pool before dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 11: Fly Bangkok, transfer to Koh Chang
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport at Phitsanulok to catch the morning flight to Bangkok. We then travel in our private bus for around 4 – 4 ½ hours to the coastal town of Laem Ngop. A ferry ride of 45 minutes then transports us to the island of Ko Chang. We check into our beach resort hotel and get to know the island which is Thailand’s second largest and considered one of its most beautiful, known for its excellent beaches. Dazzling white sands, fringed with palms and lapped by crystal clear waters, beneath an azure sky. What better way to relax at the end of the trip? (B)
Day 12: Free time at the beach
We have included 2 full days on Ko Chang which can be used as you like. It is a great place to relax and have fun swimming or in beach activities. The island also offers several activities and tours such as scuba diving, sea kayaking, jet skiing and Island hopping cruises. (B)
Day 13: Free time at the beach
A second full day to play on the beach or to take part in optional activities. (B)
Day 14: Return to Bangkok
After a final morning at the beach we catch the ferry back to Laem Ngop and make the return drive to Bangkok International Airport where KE Land Only package services end. (B)
