Provence - A Family Vacation in France

How many kids do you know who've seen fields that are completely purple Or kayaked under a Roman aqueduct Or watched monks at work in an ancient abbey? Your family will be the exception by the end of this amazing journey.
Provence is perfect for a mellow family vacation. There are good walks...our château hotel with a swimming pool...and memorable food. (Who knew the French ate pizza). The adults will be welcomed to one of the fine vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We've arranged a provençal cooking lesson for those so inclined. And everyone enjoys exploring the bories, weird circular stone huts that no one can explain. We love bringing families to this region because it's unique enough for everyone to feel far from home...but so easy that even the least-seasoned traveler has fun.
Day 1: Avignon / Loriol Du Comtat
We meet in Avignon, a walled city, surrounded by battlements and 37 towers. This was the site of the papacy from 1316 until the early 15th century and during this period the grand Palace of the Popes was built. An afternoon walk takes us through the colorful central square and includes an exploration of the palace. This walk covers a compact area of the city and is fun for adults and kids. Later in the afternoon, we journey to our château hotel for the week. Originally the 18th century estate of a marquis, the château is located in the heart of sunny Provence, near the cultural center of Avignon. Surrounded by fragrant herbs and vegetation, its garden has beautiful views and a lovely pool. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: D
Day 2: Gordes
After a relaxing start to the day over local specialties, we bid farewell for the morning to our château hotel. The kids remain at the château with painting supplies in hand, where they enjoy a morning painting lesson. Meanwhile, the adults embark on a beautiful walk to Sénanque Abbey. One of only three Cistercian monasteries in Provence and still occupied by the monks, the abbey was built in the 12th century and is set in an isolated valley in a field of lavender and oaks. We follow a foot path leading to the monastery that winds through vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields. Mid-morning, the children transfer by van to meet us at Sénanque in time to enjoy a picnic lunch together as a group.

After lunch and a visit, we leave Sénanque Abbey by way of an easy walk to Gordes that winds through the Village des Bories. Bories are amazing corbelled vaults of stone created by layers of flagstone with no mortar to secure them. Similar construction has been found through out remote parts of Europe, often dating to Neolithic times. Local experts date these bories to the 18th and 19th century, making them contemporary with the Renaissance château in Gordes. Kids love to get inside and scramble around them. (We've seen perfectly reserved adults do the same thing.) We arrive in Gordes mid afternoon with time for an ice cream and shopping. Returning to the hotel ,there's time to challenge one of the kids to some a game or two (boules anyone?) or lounge about before the adults head into town for dinner and the kids enjoy a cooking lesson at the hotel, along with the chance to enjoy their culinary creations. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: B, L, D (kids only)
Day 3: Séguret / Châteauneauf-Du-Pape
Vaison has a weekly market that includes local cheeses, fruits, breads and wines, and we pay a visit this morning to sample the local specialties. The stalls are filled with brightly colored foods and we always have fun trying to talk with the vendors. After we finish browsing the market, the kids leave for a morning pottery class in a nearby village, while the adults head out on foot into the storybook countryside to the village of Séguret. Following the pottery class, the kids transfer by van to meet us in Séguret, where we have a chance together to visit the local craftsmen, called santonniers, at work. Santons figurines were originally part of nativity scenes in the 17th century and were made out of clay by Jean Louis Lagnel, a potter from Marseille. Soon, figures depicted traditional Provençal characters, including the baker and shepherd.

After lunch, we head off a short distance to visit the ruins of Château des Papes, the former summer house of the popes. The château was damaged in 1562 during the Wars of Religion and then finally destroyed in 1944. Clambering over and around the remaining walls gives the kids an up-close chance to see the scale of the original château and its magnificent views across the Rhône valley. Later this afternoon, the kids return with our guide to our château hotel for games around the pool, while adults head off a short distanceto the vineyards and village of Châteauneauf-du-Pape. Here, friends at an excellent winery welcome us for a tasting in the cellars, preceded by a tour through the vineyards of this famous wine-producing region, where grapes were first planted in the 14th century by the Avignon popes. We return to the hotel later in the afternoon in time to relax as a family, play games and read by the pool. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: B, D
Day 4: Uzés
Fortified with a delicious breakfast of hot chocolate, yogurt, fresh croissants and fruit, we pay a short visit to the charming town of Uzés, where we have some time to explore, shop, and view the old watermill houses situated along the Alzon River.

Mid-morning, we take an easy walk to the Pont-du-Gard. Built over 2,000 years ago, it was both a bridge and an aqueduct, and is now one of the remaining Roman wonders of Provence. The walk takes us first through vineyards and past remains of the old aqueduct system, finally arriving at thePont-du-Gard, which magnificently spans the Gordon River. Here, we have a special treat waiting for us- a picnic lunch along the banks of the river, and kayaks for an afternoon of paddling and exploring. We have available one and two man kayaks so that you can paddle on your own or with your kids, along with an instructor to keep us all under control during our leisurely afternoon on the water.

We return to our château hotel in the late afternoon where you may want to relax by the pool with a copy of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence or enjoy a pastis before dinner. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: B, L, D
Day 5: Le Barroux
This morning, adults leave the estate to visit our friend in a nearby village for a private instruction in provençal cooking, including specialties such as tapenade (black olive paste) and soufflés. After preparing the meal, we join in for a gourmet lunch to celebrate the completion of our lesson. While the adults are at the cooking instruction, our young explorers are off with our guide to discover the caves of Thouzon, and the amazing Roman ampitheater at Orange. Late morning, the kids arrive at the château for an exploration of the vineyards, and some time to play in the pool and picnic on the grounds. (Kids are always fascinated to know that Roman ruins were found here when the pool was excavated.)

After lunch, adults and kids set off together for an easy, beautiful walk in the valley below the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range near the charming hill village of Le Barroux. Our leisurely walk follows an easy, beautiful trail that passes through apricot groves, olive trees and vineyards, and offers spectacular views of villages like Suzette and the lace-like crest of the Dentelles. Our path culminates at a Romanesque-style monastery, where about 60 monks live and actively work the property. We stop for a visit and a chance to listen in on their chants. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: B, L, D
Day 6: Les Baux / St. Remy
Our first destination this morning is Les Baux, a spectacular village perched above "Le Val d'Enfer" with extraordinary rock formations. A countrysidewalk leads through the Alpilles to St. Paul de Mausole, a former abbey with a lovely 12th century cloister, and later a mental hospital where Van Gogh spent the last year of his life. Following a visit here, we arrive for a visit in the charming neighboring town of St. Remy. Recently, St. Remy has become well-known as Princess Caroline of Monaco's home. There's an opportunity here to spend some time looking through the interesting little shops.

This afternoon, a visit to an old olive oil mill offers us the opportunity to taste its products and learn about the age-old techniques in olive production. While summer is not olive picking season, we can often convince our guides to giveus a demonstration on how olives are harvested, by smacking the trees with long poles to make the olives fall into harvesting nets. We return to our château hotel in the late afternoon to relax before our farewell dinner together. Overnight: Orange (countryside) Meals: B, D
Day 7: Aix-en-Provence
We leave our château in the quiet countryside and venture to the elegant university town of Aix-en-Provence, home of Cezanne. A guided walk around the city follows in many of the artist's footsteps, and includes the beautiful Cours Mirabeau boulevard with its outdoor cafes and fountains, as well as the flower and vegetable market held every Saturday. Our journey culminates in Aix where we will take you directly to the TGV rail station. Meals: B
