Tuscany - A Family Vacation in Italy

San Gimignano is a perfect family destination. Adults love the romantic hilltop town with its 14 medieval towers. And the kids? Those stories of boiling oil poured on enemies get them every time.
Tuscany speaks to all ages. There are mountain bike rides on the wide city walls of Lucca. You'll snap pictures of each other holding up the leaning tower of Pisa. On great country walks we'll stop for lunches unlike any you've had at home. Kids will be amazed to find some of their favorite foods—and we've arranged pizza-making lessons and gelato-tasting especially for their palates. The adults will enjoy the fine art and Renaissance architecture, the vineyards of Chianti, outstanding shopping and perhaps the finest meals you'll ever eat. And you'll all add “ciao” to your vocabularies.
Day 1: Florence / Chianti
We meet in spectacular Florence. While our guide tells us personal stories and historical anecdotes of the Medici family and others, we wind our way through the ancient streets—past towers, palaces and churches. To keep things fun for everyone, our walk covers a compact area of the city and includes both the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the bustling Piazza Signoria.

Later in the afternoon, we head south across the Arno River into Chianti and our home for the week. And this is no ordinary hotel. In fact, our villa-hotel was once the palace of the noble Ricasoli family. Take a dip in the pool or join your kids who are already being shown around their real Tuscan villa. If you like, take some time on your own to get acquainted with your new surroundings that include vineyards and villas dotting the nearby hills. This evening, we dine al fresco on the terrace at the villa. No question: you are officially in Tuscany! Overnight: Chianti Meals: D
Day 2: Chianti - Greve
Fortified with a delicious breakfast of hot chocolate, yogurt, fresh rolls and fruit, a morning walk for the adults takes us through classic Chianti landscapes, past cypress-lined roads, olive groves, villas, castles and parish churches. Meanwhile, the kids meet our friend, Paola, who helps them try their hand at creating ceramics using techniques that date back to Renaissance times.

Late morning, the adults arrive in Greve—the main market town in Chianti and the birthplace of explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. We have a chance to explore the little village square and its shops before we meet with the children for a pizza lunch in our favorite local trattoria. This afternoon, on our way back to the villa, kids and parents have the chance to shop and explore in the picturesque village of Castellina. Once we return, families can relax back at the villa's pool, playing games or reading, before we all have dinner at a restaurant in a nearby village. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D
Day 3: Chianti - San Gimignano
Our morning walk takes us through vineyards and ends at a private lunch with a local family in their country house on the grounds of a 15th century castle. Over lunch, we taste from our hosts' cellar, enjoying a young Chianti Classico and a rich, aged "barrique" wine. Enjoy yourself. The kids are once again in good hands. With their dedicated guide, they'll spend a morning in the countryside with activities that include watercolor painting and their own kidfriendly lunch.

Early afternoon, we return to our hotel for an all-family bocce ball tournament. Later, we pay a special visit to San Gimignano, while its 14 medieval towers shimmer in the afternoon sun. Parents and children enjoy separate, guided explorations of the walled hill town. In medieval times, when the town competed with Florence and Siena for supremacy, San Gimignano boasted over 70 towers. A local expert and friend describes for us how the towers were used both for defensive purposes, as well as for ego building. (Kids love when our guides talk about how the towers were really good lookouts and great for pouring boiling oil over enemies!) This evening, we dine together al fresco at an Agriturismo just minutes from our hotel. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, L, D
Day 4: Lucca
This morning, everybody makes the excursion to Lucca for a morning visit and lunch. It was here in 56 BC that Caesar, Pompey and Crassus agreed to rule Rome as a triumvirate. It was also the first town in Tuscany to accept Christianity. Today, Lucca boasts wonderful 16th century Renaissance walls, a spectacular white marble duomo, a Roman amphitheater, and elegant shops. For the kids, we've added something that's always a hit with our own families on visits to Lucca—riding bicycles on the wall surrounding the town. Your kids will love this (and you adults can come along if you want). The walls are earthen and create a lovely tree-lined park about 50 feet wide. Riding on them offers great views of the town and the surrounding countryside. After the ride, we find time to work in a stop for gelato.

After lunch, our return trip includes a stop in Pisa for a look at everybody's favorite off-balance building. We still treasure our family photos of the kids pretending to hold up the leaning tower. Back at the villa, a game of hide and seek awaits the kids on the villa grounds, while the adults can join in or relax with a book by the pool. We dine this evening together at the villa where the chef often prepares specialties just for us. It's not just steak - it's bistecca Fiorentina, grilled on embers in a wood-burning oven and served with Tuscan white beans dressed with fresh sage and cold-pressed olive oil. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D
Day 5: Colle Val D'elsa / Monteriggioni
This morning it's your choice to relax in and around the villa or join our guides for an easy walk suitable for both kids and adults. The path begins right at our hotel and leads to the medieval town of Colle Val d'Elsa, the crystal capital of Italy. Our guide shows us the old part of town, giving adults ample time to explore a few crystal shops before lunch in the main square.

Following lunch, the adults have the opportunity for a special visit to an 11th century Benedictine abbey complex, Badia Isola. Our guide knows the custodian and has arranged special permission for us to enter the church, an important stop along the Pilgrim's Road to Rome. From here, we follow a scenic footpath to Monteriggioni, the most spectacular fortified town in all of Tuscany. Oval-shaped with 14 towers placed along its sheer walls, this remarkable fortress was built by Siena against Florence and was cited by Dante in his Inferno. Our footpath to Monteriggioni offers views of olive groves, stands of cypress and fields of poppies.

Kids can skip the walk in favor of a scavenger hunt back at the villa. We have the adults back in the late afternoon in time to relax before dinner at their leisure in one of the nearby villages. A particularly enjoyable event tonight for the kids is a pizza-making party...and a chance to enjoy their culinary creations. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D (kids)
Day 6: Siena
Our morning visit today is great for everyone—it's the cinnamon-colored town of Siena, the true heart of the Tuscan hill towns and a work of art in itself. Still encircled by brick walls, Siena has been an elegant cultural landmark for centuries, truly unique in its medieval splendor. Here we enjoy a wonderfully scenic and historic walk around the town—into the sloping, scallop-shaped Piazza del Campo, through the maze of streets lined with gothic and medieval houses, towers and palazzo, to the zebra striped Duomo cathedral. Along the way, our guide tells us how fiercely community teams have competed in the Palio horse race run in Piazza del Campo every year for centuries. Your kids will also love the collectible flags and scarves that reflect the local districts and feature animals from owls and caterpillars to snails, unicorns and dragons.

In time for lunch, adults head off for Montalcino, home of the world famous Brunello wines. Here we have ample time to explore the town with our guide and on our own. Enjoy a nice quiet lunch with, maybe, a glass of Brunello...or two. Meanwhile, kids follow their lunch with a gelato making and tasting session. (By now, they are expert at knowing the Italian words for the various flavors, including limone, cioccolato and stracciatella!) Later, we'll pick up the adults in time to head back to the villa and relax before our farewell dinner together. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D
Day 7: Florence
After breakfast, we say arrivederci to our hosts and make a short transfer to Florence, where we part company. Meals: B
