Barcelona & Costa Brava Walking Tour

When we asked our guides how to describe Catalonia to you, they surprised us. "Tell them we are Tuscany, only better." We'll admit they have a point. Spain's easternmost province is a sensory revelation that easily equals the best of Italy.
The aromas of the local markets and the fresh Mediterranean air along the Costa Brava remind you how rich the world really is. And stimulated by walks in rustic countryside or on the cosmopolitan avenues of Barcelona, your sense of taste will be more than satisfied by the vivid flavors of Catalan cuisine. With all due respect to our guides, this tour offers so much that Tuscany can't—paths through a park full of extinct volcanoes...a dip in the sea at your private resort...and fascinating Moorish-accented history and architecture that leave no mistake you're in Spain. If you have already enjoyed time in Southern Europe's other favorite regions but don't want to repeat yourself, make this your next destination. We promise you won't be disappointed!
Day 1: Barcelona
Barcelona is one of Europe's most beautiful and distinctive cities, as we’ll see on a leisurely walk from our hotel through the city’s medieval heart, the Gothic Quarter. You feel as if you've literally stepped back into time as we wander the maze of tightly packed medieval streets.

How long does it take to build one of those multi-spired basilicas that tower over so many European cities? The answer is still to come in Barcelona. We continue our exploration with a visit to La Sagrada Familia where the first stone was laid in 1882 (and you'll get a glimpse of the construction that continues to this day). It's just one of the landmark designs of the architect Antonio Gaudí that we'll encounter as we roam Barcelona together.

This evening, we’ll stroll to dinner along La Rambla, a boulevard where cafes, market stalls and street performers compete for your attention under the shade of tightly pruned plane trees. Our welcome dinner is at our guide’s favorite restaurant, renowned for the quality of its paella. Overnight: Barcelona Meals: D
Day 2: Barcelona / Vic
This morning, we leave behind Barcelona for a drive of about an hour to the village of Rupit, located in the rolling hills of Northern Catalonia. Here you have the option to explore the picturesque village or join our guide for a remarkably scenic waterside walk to a dramatic waterfall. Along the way, we see how various Mediterranean cultures have populated and used the land in similar ways. The villages and scattered gray and pink stone maslas (farmhouses) may well remind you of Tuscany or even Provence.

Midday, we’re all back in Rupit where there are a number of fine options for lunch. Follow our guides to their favorites or venture on your own to find the perfect lunch spot to enjoy the local specialities. (Among our favorites: local sheep and goat’s milk cheeses, Catalan sausages with white beans, grilled vegetables, and the famous carquiñoles or almond biscuits.)

Mid-afternoon, we make a short journey to Vic. Our boutique hotel is located in the countryside outside the ancient town, perched on a plateau at the confluence of two rivers. The four-star parador hotel where we settle in for two nights has the feel of a Catalan farmhouse with its well-tended garden, bedrooms with terraces and a magnificent swimming pool. We pause along the way so that anyone who’d like can hop out and join our guide for a one hour walk with views of the Pyrenees, ending at the parador. Overnight: Vic Meals: B, D
Day 3: Vic / Santa Pau
Garrotxa Volcanic Park is Europe's largest region of extinct volcanoes. A short drive drops us there for a morning walk through beech forests and meadows carpeted in wild flowers and herbs. Here, you'll understand why we always feel as if time has almost stood still, so untouched are the villages, castles and abbeys that perch on surrounding crags.

We continue our walk through Fageda d'en Jorda, an unusual beech tree forest near Croscat volcano. (In the autumn you practically need sunglasses to gape at the incredible colors.) On foot, we arrive in Santa Pau, a spectacular walled medieval village built out of volcanic rock, to visit a local workshop where our potter friend demonstrates the techniques that yield the region's famous ceramics. After a visit with our artisan-friend, we enjoy a number of options for a late lunch in town, then wind our way back to the parador to relax before dinner. Combining many of the best elements of France and Spain, Catalan cuisine is wholesome and served in hearty portions. Tonight we enjoy local specialties such as habas a la catalana (a spicy broad-bean stew), zarzuela de mariscos ("operetta" of seafood), butifarra (Catalan pork sausage), and crema catalana (crème brulee). Overnight: Vic Meals: B, D
Day 4: Girona / Aiguablava
This morning's footpath passes through oaks and wild flowers with water views, right from our front door to the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, a remarkable example of Catalonian Romanesque architecture. After a visit, we continue on the scenic route to the ancient walled city of Girona. Delightfully hidden, except to the locals, its full of narrow streets, cool churches and rows of orange-colored houses leaning over the banks of the River Onyar.

Girona was once a Moorish stronghold, and it reputedly withstood three invasions by Napoleon's troops, giving it the moniker "City of a Thousand Sieges." Our leisurely walk takes us past the 17th century cathedral and amazingly well-preserved Romanesque baths, built by Moorish craftsmen in the 12th century, and finally along the Passeig Arquaeològic, where we get an astounding view of the cathedral's 11th century Charlemagne Tower.

The country air is good for the appetite so you won't be disappointed that Girona is well known for its pa amb tomàquet, a Catalan specialty of grilled bread slathered in olive oil, garlic and fresh tomato. You'll be well primed for arrival at our luxurious coastal hotel where you can swim in the pool, stretch out on the beach or explore the nearby villas and seaside mansions. If you're so inclined, join our guide for an afternoon walk along the coastal trails for your first glimpse of the Costa Brava. Overnight: Girona - Begur Meals: B, D
Day 5: Empurias / Figueres
Our scenic walk this morning ends at the fabulous Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries, a city built by Greek merchants on the Mediterranean seashore more than 25 centuries ago, and later occupied by the Roman legions, who then established a town around 100 BC. In both the Greek and the Roman sites, we can admire the layouts of public and private houses, some with amazingly well preserved floors with Roman mosaics, the outline of the main streets lined with shops, public baths, gardens and temples; all surrounded by huge city walls. As we explore with our guide, and with the blue Mediterranean in the backdrop, the ruins grow in our imagination into the great city it once was, when Europe and the world were still taking shape and the Mediterranean was considered the Medi (center) of the Terra (Earth). The region's most famous son was Salvador Dalí, and this afternoon we visit his hometown of Figueres.

There's time for a relaxed visit to the Dalí museum, which the artist personally designed and decorated. Having already spent some time along the coastline of the Costa Brava, it's easy enough to see how Dalí's surreal paintings actually reflect this dramatic landscape. Afterward, we'll return to our resort hotel for an evening in the relaxed tempo of this seaside land. Overnight: Girona - Begur Meals: B, L
Day 6: Costa Brava
Today we dedicate the entire day to exploring the coastal villages that dot the Costa Brava, taking in the breathtaking sea views, cliffs and coves. We begin in Cap Roig where a lush botanical garden carved into the rock overlooks the luminous blue Mediterranean. If you've ever walked the Cinque Terre, you'll feel right at home here. The path takes in white sand beaches, secluded coves ringed by umbrella pines, and hillside villas painted in glowing ochre and cream. Along the way, we'll pause in Calella, a red-tiled fishing village with a simple white church tower.

Our final and favorite destination of the morning is a crescent shaped bay hugged by the small village of Llafranc, where we pause for lunch. This afternoon, you have a couple of enticing options: shopping or relaxing. If you opt for shopping we make a short drive past rose-colored stone houses and ramparts to the restored 10th century town of Pals, whose old quarter has been declared a Historic Artistic Site. Prefer to relax at our hotel overlooking the sea? We’ll take you there to lounge away on your last afternoon along the coast.

After a full day soaking up the Costa Brava, we enjoy a farewell dinner tonight. Maybe you’ll choose to enjoy grilled local fish so fresh that it was caught just that morning. Savor a cup of cremat (a mixture of rum and coffee), a typical sailor's drink, while enjoying outstanding views of the entire coast stretched out below. Bon Profit! Overnight: Girona - Begur Meals: B, D
Day 7: Barcelona
After breakfast, we return to Barcelona where we part company. Extend your visit in this charming city to do more exploring or as a convenient base for excursions to Montserrat, the wineries of Alt Penedès and the popular beach resort of Sitges. Meals: B

"It was the end of a perfect day. We were dining outside in the garden of our exquisite hotel with our fellow travelers. The weather was balmy. The gourmet food defied description. A piano played softly. I looked up to the sky and there was a full moon. It was a magical evening that I will never forget."
