Barcelona & Costa Brava Family Vacation

Instead of taking your family to “the beach,” we recommend the beach. That’s the Costa Brava on Spain’s gorgeous Mediterranean coast just north of Barcelona.
We start in the city with its great Gothic Quarter and off the- charts Gaudi architecture. There’s time, as well, in countryside that looks more than a little like Tuscany. The walking is great. The villages are so old. And our parador is a great family retreat with terrific views and an even more terrific pool. Then we hit the main event: Our luxury hotel overlooking the sea and with every amenity your family could hope for. We’ll hit the beaches for sure. But we’ve planned a ton of other pastimes from biking, to exploring Roman ruins, to sea kayaking on some of the clearest, bluest water you’ve ever see. In the company of our local guides, you’ll all get a great feel for the Catalonian culture – and a mix of excellent eating, energy-burning activities and memorable sightseeing that will make this a way-better-than-the-beach vacation!
Day 1: Barcelona
Barcelona is a great family city where a young and lively vibe mixes with historic districts and a fun street life. We’ll get a taste for it all on a great introductory walk. The Gothic Quarter is especially cool. It’s hard to believe people lived this close on a maze of streets so narrow. These days, the centuries-old buildings are home to great shops of all kinds.

The basilica of La Sagrada Familia looks like no other building in the world. Its circular tapered spires soar over almost every view in Barcelona. They started building it in 1882 – and it’s still not finished! The architect’s name was Antonio Gaudí, and our guide will tell you all about him. Part of the game in this city is learning to spot his other outlandish projects, from apartment houses to parks where crazy mosaic benches snake and swoop through the terrain.

In the evening, we head to La Rambla. It’s the most popular boulevard in town. As we head to and from dinner there, we’ll stop to applaud street performers and shop in market stalls. And that dinner will be at our guide’s favorite restaurant. They’re renowned for their broad, shallow skillets paella, plus other Catalan specialties to suit everybody’s tastes. Overnight: Barcelona (Catalonia Plaza Catalunya Hotel) Meals: D
Lodging Catalonia Plaza Cataluña
Description Formerly Catalonia Duques de Bergara. This magnificent hotel is located in the centre of Barcelona, a few metres from Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas. Built in 1899 by one of Gaudí's masters, it is a beautiful modernist-style building. The construction conserves the most significant elements of the period and the facade has recently been restored. In its interesting interior patio, you can take a relaxing swim in the pool or sunbathe and enjoy a refreshing cocktail. Furthermore, the hotel offers a free parking for bicycles for its guests.
Day 2: Barcelona / Vic
This morning, we head out into the rolling hills of Northern Catalonia to the village of Rupit. It’s hard to imagine living here, in stone houses that are piled up on the edge of rocky crags. But we’ll see that people do. We’ll also hit a country trail that ends at some amazing waterfalls. Unlike at home, you can easily see proof that people have lived here for thousands of years. And this countryside is so, so quiet. Sometimes the only sounds are birds or water rushing down a stream. The gray and pink stone maslas (farmhouses) that pop up along our route look a lot like what you’d see in Tuscany or Provence.

Midday, we’re back in Rupit for lunch. You can follow our guides to their favorites or head out on your own for a taste of the local specialties. Our kids love the local sheep and goat cheeses. The Catalan sausages with white beans, grilled vegetables, and the famous carquiñoles or almond biscuits are all worth a taste.

After lunch, we take a short drive to the ancient town of Vic. Part way there, anyone who wants to can hop out and join our guide for a one-hour walk. There are great views of the Pyrenees mountains and the trail ends at our four star boutique hotel. Parador de Vic-Sau feels like a farmhouse – though most farmers probably don’t have such an awesome swimming pool. The location is really fine because we’re up on the top of a high plateau overlooking a valley where the River Ter creates a U-shaped peninsula that flows into a lake popular with sailors and kayakers. We’re here for two nights in rooms with terraces and great views. So there’s plenty of time to settle in and explore the grounds. Overnight: Vic (Parador de Vic-Sau) Meals: B, D
Lodging Parador Hotel Vic - Sau
Description A former Catalan farmhouse now converted into a four star luxury hotel. This Parador is in one of the most beautiful areas of the region of Osona with the Guillerias mountains in the background and the Sau reservoir nearby. Spain - Barcelona - Parador de Vic-Sau. The peaceful surroundings are in contrast to the industrialization around the city of Barcelona. The hotel has the atmosphere of a traditional Catalan farmhouse with a well looked after garden, bedrooms with colonnaded balconies and a magnificent swimming pool.
Day 3: Vic / Santa Pau
Eat up at breakfast, because we’re walking today in Garrotxa Volcanic Park, Europe's largest region of extinct volcanoes. It’s sort of like living in a picture on a calendar with forests and wildflower meadows. But what we really love is that everywhere you look there are also old villages and castles and abbeys. People who walked here 300 or 400 years ago had basically the same view. You understand that history isn’t just the past. It’s here and now, too.

On one leg of the walk, we’re in Fageda d'en Jorda, an unusual beech tree forest near Croscat volcano. (In the autumn you practically need sunglasses because the leaves are so brightly colored.) On foot, we arrive in Santa Pau, a walled medieval village built out of volcanic rock. A potter friend of ours lives and works here, and we have a standing invitation to stop by his workshop. The ceramics here are very famous, and it’s amazing to watch him at work. But he’ll also give us a chance to try making our own. Back at our parador, you can hit the pool, go for your own walk, or just relax before dinner. Tonight’s a terrific chance to dig into Catalan cuisine. It has a mix of French and Spanish elements, and the servings are big! You might try habas a la catalana (a spicy broad-bean stew) or zarzuela de mariscos ("operetta" of seafood), but be sure to save room for crema catalana (crème brulee), everybody’s favorite dessert. Overnight: (Parador de Vic-Sau) Meals: B, D

Day 4: Girona / Aiguablava
This morning's footpath starts at our front door, and it leads to the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres. It’s a stout, recently restored Romanesque structure that was built in the 10th century. What’s so amazing is how it sits high over the valley, more like a castle than a home for monks.

The ancient walled city of Girona is just as old. One of its neatest claims to fame: the rows of orange-colored houses that line the banks of the River Onyar. In some places they almost seem to lean right over the banks. Our leisurely walk takes us past the 17th century cathedral and the public baths built in the 12th century. And if those buildings aren’t old enough for you, we’ll also get a look at the 11th century Charlemagne Tower as we walk along the Passeig Arquaeològic. The country air is good for your appetite so you won't be disappointed that Girona is well known for its pa amb tomàquet, grilled bread slathered in olive oil, garlic and fresh tomato.

You’ll pedal your lunch off as we go biking this afternoon. We’ll outfit you with just the right bike and gear. Then our friend Daniel leads us off for an easy ride on paved trails. Along the way, we get our first great views of the coastline. And like every perfect bike ride, this one ends at a luxurious coastal hotel. Take your first dip in the pool or stretch out on the beach – and enjoy living the good life! Overnight: Girona – Begur (Parador de Aiguablava) Meals: B, D
Lodging Parador de Aiguablava
Description Overlooking a secluded bay and surrounded by pine trees, the Parador de Aiguablava is an ideal location to enjoy the beautiful beaches and coves of the Costa Brava. The Mediterranean-style bedrooms offer panoramic views of the sea, and the hotel features a swimming pool, gorgeous terraces and public spaces decorated with traditional craftwork.
Day 5: Empuries / Figueres
The Greeks and Romans came to Spain thousands of years ago. They’ve been gone almost as long – but the ruins of their amazing cities are still here. Empuries was built more than 2,500 years ago. We’ll take a great guided visit of the city where it’s easy to see the layouts of public and private houses. Some of them have intricate mosaic floors that were laid by the Romans. You can also trace the outline of the main streets lined with shops, public baths, gardens and temples. It’s really an incredible place. The blue Mediterranean is in the background. You look at the ruins and let your imagination run wild as you picture the major city this used to be.

This afternoon, we’re going to a surreal museum. And we mean truly surreal because it contains the work of Salvador Dalí in his hometown of Figueres. It’s a different kind of museum because the work is all his, and he worked in a lot of styles. Some of them are serious. Others are outrageous. And you can really see the artist’s mind at work. Afterward, we'll return to our resort hotel where you can just hang out and have a relaxed evening. Overnight: Girona – Begur (Parador de Aiguablava) Meals: B, L

Day 6: Costa Brava
Your sea kayaks are ready to go right after breakfast. Even if you haven’t paddled one before, our guides will make sure that everyone who’s up for it gets to enjoy the ride. (And if you start and get tired or if you’d prefer to let somebody else do the driving, you’ll have the benefit of our back-up motorboat.) It’s a great experience. The waters from Tamariu to Cova de’n Gispert are calm. And you get the perfect point of view, being able to see the villages, cliffs and coves of the Costa Brava from sea level. Along the way, we have the chance to swim in beautiful coves, relax on the beach, and explore the most spectacular cave along the coast.

Our favorite destination is the crescent-shaped bay at Llafranc where we’ll eat lunch. Then you can either return to the hotel or join us for a short drive to the 10th century town of Pals. Its old quarter is an Historic Artistic Site, and the shopping there is terrific.

After a full day of soaking in the Costa Brava, we settle down for our farewell dinner. It’s hard to go wrong with grilled local fish so fresh that it was caught just that morning. The adults can savor a cup of cremat (a mixture of rum and coffee), a typical sailor's drink, while enjoying outstanding views of the entire coast stretched out below. Bon Profit!
