Tuscany and the Cinque Terre Walking Tour

Drinking in the sunset and the Chianti at our friend Marco’s farmhouse, we decided that Tuscany couldn’t be improved upon. Since he’s a staunch Tuscan, he surprised us by saying, “Then you’ve never been to the Cinque Terre.” So we went.
Cinque Terre are not far, these five once almost unreachable villages that grow out of rock along the Ligurian Sea. For centuries, a connecting footpath was their lifeline, but for us it’s the scenic route into a remote and vibrant coastal culture. Beforehand, we spend four nights in the parts of Tuscany we love best...complete with hill towns that rise out of silver-green olive groves, homemade pasta with wild boar sauce, and the sunny vineyards of Chianti. Throughout, we explore the art history, and savor the food and wine. But in the end, will you prefer Tuscany or the Cinque Terre? The good news is that because this trip gives you both, you don’t have to decide.
Day 1: Florence
We meet in spectacular Florence and spend our first afternoon in the company of an art historian. While our guide tells us personal stories and historical anecdotes of the Medici family and others, we wind our way through the ancient streets—past towers, palaces, churches, the incredible dome designed by Brunelleschi, the landmark Ponte Vecchio and bustling Piazza Signoria. Late in the afternoon, we enjoy a last view of Florence before we head south across the Arno River into Chianti. A short journey leads us to our lovely hotel, an ancient villa originally constructed in the 13th century and surrounded by beautiful vineyards and enchanting villas that dot the nearby hills. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D
Lodging Villa San Lucchese
Description A luxury hotel located in the heart of Tuscany's richest wine-growing region and surrounded by beautiful vineyards and enchanting villas that dot the countryside. The hotel is a converted villa with beautiful furnishings, an in-ground swimming pool, and 33 individually furnished rooms.
Day 2: Chianti / San Gimignano
Our morning walk takes us through vineyards and ends with an invitation to a private lunch with a local family in their charming country house on the grounds of a 15th century castle. Over lunch, we taste from our hosts’ cellar, enjoying a young Chianti Classico and a rich, aged “barrique” wine.

Early afternoon, we return to our hilltop hotel to relax before a special visit to San Gimignano, while its 14 medieval towers shimmer in the afternoon sun. The rest of the day is ours to explore the walled hill town. During the height of the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict, when the town competed with Florence and Siena for supremacy, San Gimignano boasted over 70 towers. A local expert and friend describes for us how the towers were used both for defensive purposes (as they were good lookouts and excellent for pouring boiling oil over people), as well as for ego building (as their owners competed to see who could build the highest tower). This evening, we dine in one of our favorite trattorias in San Gimignano, under a barrel vaulted brick ceiling. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, L, D

Day 3: Chianti / Monteriggioni / Colle Val D'elsa
Following a breakfast of local specialties, we begin the day with a private visit to an 11th century Benedictine abbey that was an important medieval center for learning and a way station along the Pilgrims’ Road to Rome. Our explorations of the ancient complex precede a scenic walk to Monteriggioni, the most spectacular fortified village in all of Tuscany. Oval shaped with 14 towers placed evenly along its sheer walls, this remarkable fortress, today a bustling village, was built by Siena against Florence and was cited by Dante in his Inferno. Our footpath to Monteriggioni offers magnificent views of olive groves, stands of cypress and fields of poppies, and intersects sections of the Via Francigena. The ancient pathway was the principal route traveled by pilgrims on their way to Rome. In Monteriggioni, there is time for lunch, followed by a visit with a local artisan who still crafts terra cotta pots by hand.

Later on in the afternoon, visit with a friendly local shepherd who gives us a private look at where he makes sheep’s-milk cheeses and the chance to sample some of his traditional specialties. Back at the hotel we relax by the villa’s pool before dinner. Overnight: Chianti Meals: B, D

Day 4: Lucca / Santa Margherita
Heading north and west through Chianti and the Arno Valley, we arrive in Lucca for a visit and lunch. It was here in 56 BC that Caesar, Pompey and Crassus agreed to rule Rome as a triumvirate. It was also the first town in Tuscany to accept Christianity. Today, Lucca boasts wonderful 16th century Renaissance walls, a spectacular white marble duomo, Roman amphitheater and elegant shops situated on cobblestone streets. Join our local guide as we enjoy a short walk along a stretch of the Renaissance walls and through the historical center, then take some time on your own to explore some of the fine shops found in Lucca.

After lunch, we drive to Pietrasanta, famous for its marble artisans. We stop in the most celebrated workshop and have the unique opportunity of following the transformation of marble rock into gleaming statues. Afterwards, we drive along the Apuane Mountains, past quarries that provided the marble for all of Michelangelo’s carvings, and to Santa Margherita, our home for three nights. Here, we’re perfectly situated in the heart of the Italian Riviera and to explore Portofino and the Cinque Terre, the five lovely seaside villages along the Tuscan Coast. Our hotel, on a beautiful harbor, has a picture perfect view of the coast and water. Overnight: Santa Margherita Meals: B, D
Day 5: Cinque Terre
From our seaside hotel, we hop on the little coastal train for a quick and scenic journey to Rio Maggiore, the southernmost of the five coastal villages. Here, we join the Via dell’Amore walking trail, stopping for lunch in one of the villages and leaving plenty of time to enjoy a gelato and an espresso in another. Our walk today takes us through olive groves along cliffs overlooking the sea to the five sister villages: Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and finally Monterosso. (If you’d like to skip any of the walking, there’s always the coastal train and ferry boats that run between the villages.)

Our first stop along the coastal path is Manarola, sitting on a tiny harbor and hemmed in by sheer cliffs. Next, we reach Corniglia, perched on a hillside among vineyards, and offering excellent views of the entire coast. Then it’s on to colorful Vernazza, with its narrow streets, small square and arcades, and the remains of a fort dating to medieval times. At the end of the walk in Monterosso, we return to our seaside hotel. If you’d like, stop first for a swim in the warm blue sea to celebrate the completion of our day’s activities. Overnight: Santa Margherita Meals: B
Day 6: Portofino / Santa Margherita
This morning, we journey on foot right out of our hotel onto the Portofino Promontory, and follow a lovely path that leads us into the fabled coastal resort of Portofino for a visit. Here we have time to rummage the little shops that hug the picturesque harbor and even explore Castello Brown perched high above the village with scenic views of Portofino and the coastline. Midmorning, we walk out of Portofino on our way to St. Fruttuoso. The tiny monastery is located on a very small beach and is inaccessible by car. We reach the monastery via a beautiful, meandering path past villas tucked serenely behind flowering gardens and enjoy unparalleled views of the sea over the course of our walk of about two and a half hours.

After lunch overlooking the little cove and monastery, we enjoy an afternoon boat ride back to our hotel in the elegant coastal village of Santa Margherita. Our hotel, one of the first grand hotels on the Portofino coast, was transformed from a private residence at the end of the 19th century. Since then, it has hosted kings, queens and Hollywood royalty. The hotel’s liberty style building and pool overlook the promenade to Portofino and dominate the Tigullio Gulf. After some time to relax, we gather together for a festive farewell dinner. Overnight: Santa Margherita Meals: B, D
Day 7: Pisa
Leaving Santa Margherita we drive south to Pisa. Many of the Crusaders’ boats sailed from here, and the resulting Arabic art themes make its Duomo and leaning tower unique monuments. After a visit, you have the choice of parting company at the Pisa train station or airport, or even to transfer back to Florence with our guide. Meals: B

"Having traveled several times with other tour companies, the amazing thing about Classic Journeys was that for the first time we felt not like tourists, but like we were visiting family everywhere we went. Our guide’s skill, charm and love for his country and its people is contagious! By the time the tour was over we felt that we were all ‘Italiano’ (in spirit, if nothing else)!"
